To dress DD(2) in white-ish dress for wedding?

We're going to a wedding later this year. We were given a lovely handmade dress for our 2 year-old DD as a gift but still haven't had an opportunity to wear it so I was thinking she could wear it to this wedding but I'm unsure if it's "too" white". It's a white background, but with bright multicoloured floral and leaf prints on it, very similar to this one.

My MIL insists it's absolutely fine as 1. it's not completely white and the brighter colours dominate, and 2. the "no white" rule doesn't count for little kids anyway because they're hardly going to be mistaken for the bride. But I just wanted to see if others agree.

I'm keen to use it if I can because money's pretty tight at the mo so can't afford to buy a new dress, although obvs if people do think it's a massive no-no then we'll just have to think of something.

(I've never actually met the bride so I can't really ask her.)

I'd love to see the real dress but you don't need to worry.

gogohm · 30/03/2022 11:41

Completely fine, it's all white/cream dresses that could be confused with the bridal party that are a no no

I wore this dress to ds1's wedding last month - and I wasn't the only guest in a dress that was floral pattern on a white or cream background - and the bride and groom were both entirely comfortable with dresses like this on adults, so I can't imagine anyone objecting to a little girl wearing a dress like that, @KarenOLantern.

You could put a bright coloured cardigan over it, if you are worried - I wore a pink shawl and pink accessories.

Use it. Its not white - the brighter colours attract more attention. Plus shes 2! Shes a little kid so rules are different. How lovely for her to wear the homemade dress to the wedding.

FlyingPandas · 30/03/2022 11:51

It is beautiful OP and totally appropriate. Go for it and don't worry.

Totally fine! A lovely dress, and that rule definitely doesn’t apply to children.

Notwithittoday · 30/03/2022 12:01

Fine

sparklycat444 · 30/03/2022 12:04

Lovely dress! I think it’s absolutely fine as she’s little!

Beachbreak2411 · 30/03/2022 12:11

I was oblivious to this when my dd was little.. we went to 2 weddings when she was tiny; like 4 months old but the size of a newborn; she wore a white monsoon dress. Then another when she was 3; she wore a gorgeous cream monsoon dress.. all were summer weddings and the Brides did not mind at all… but I still cringe now I read all of these kind of posts that I was being inappropriate and got lucky with relaxed Brides!!

Nothing to cringe about. Everyone here has responded saying it's fine.

Movemyshed · 30/03/2022 12:17

There's nothing inappropriate about a child wearing a completely white or cream dress.

You'd have to be crazy to take offence at that.

viques · 30/03/2022 12:18

It’s a dear little dress with a floral fabric that happens to have a white background. She will look delightful.

SpringLobelia · 30/03/2022 12:19

That;s fine. She will look gorgeous. For the first time in 10 years I got a broody feeling just looking at the photo and imagining a gorgeous little poppet in that dress.

DrDetriment · 30/03/2022 12:23

She's 2. It's lovely. No one will mistake her for the bride.

irishfarmer · 30/03/2022 12:23

It's perfect and super cute!

KarmaStar · 30/03/2022 12:29

Beautiful dress,nothing to worry about.

Goldfishmountainclimber · 30/03/2022 12:36

Absolutely fine.
It’s a lovely dress.

Chasingaftermidnight · 30/03/2022 12:41

That’s fine, it’s lovely. I’ve actually worn dresses not dissimilar to that to weddings as an adult.

Whatalovelydaffodil · 30/03/2022 12:45

@DappledThings

A friend's then 5 year old wore an all white dress and a tiara to my wedding. It was totally fine. Anyone who gets het up about what a child wears to a wedding is ridiculous.
If you were happy about it that's fine, but it's not fine to dress your daughter in a typical bridesmaid's dress unless she has actually been asked to be a bridesmaid.
thewreckofthehesperus · 30/03/2022 12:49

Beautiful dress and totally fine for a wedding

comealongponds · 30/03/2022 12:49

Plain white might be a bit much but a bright pattern like that would be absolutely fine unless the bride is a complete bridezilla!

nokidshere · 30/03/2022 12:53

Any adult who is stressed about what a child wears to a wedding is batshit.

WibbleWobbleWibble · 30/03/2022 12:54

Totally fine for dd to wear..........it looks nothing like a flower girl or bridesmaid dress.

emmathedilemma · 30/03/2022 12:55

Absolutely fine!

UrslaB · 30/03/2022 12:56

The don't wear white rule onlyapplies to adults at a wedding. Besdies, this dress has a colourful design on it so it doesn't count anyway. It sounds like a beautiful dress and being a hand made gift I would be eager to get some wear out of it before she outgrows it.
