To ask what you have at home

Was talking with a colleagues yesterday about safety devises at home and they made out that I was kind of over the top with things I have.
They got the house alarm and ring cameras for security outside and things like first aid kits and co2 thingy but started laughing when I told them I had fire extinguishers upstairs and downstairs, with fire blankets in kitchen.
Just wondered what people have in their homes. I'd assumed everyone would have everything they could Hmm

We’ve got an alarm system that goes through to the police with panic alarms, and a built in smoke/co2/fire alarm sensor which goes straight through to the fire dept. It saved my life when I was a teenager.

Have a loose idea of a plan in the event of a fire and/or burglary (mainly get the hell out!) and a slightly stocked up medical cabinet with our usual bits we need.

No fire blankets/extinguishers, because getting us all out of the house will be tricky enough and I don’t want to get trapped fighting a fire.

daisyjgrey · 30/03/2022 21:02

Ring camera and lights, smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detector, a small fire extinguisher under the kitchen sink and a fair amount of first aid stuff that has accumulated over the years.

wow I didn't think the police had direct links to alarms in the Uk now what brand is it please?
godmum56 · 30/03/2022 21:09

@Octomore

Interestingly, you've not mentioned some things that are far more likely to come in useful, like a high-vis vest and a torch in the car.
Oh I have those, also two warm hi viz jackets because passenger
Lactarius · 30/03/2022 21:23

We have the usual CO & fire alarms. I have a fire extinguisher in the workshop (only had to use one so far) and a couple set out by the forge. First aid kit in doors as well as an additional one in the workshop (with trauma dressings and tourniquet), tend to have a field dressing & tourniquet in my bike pack too. I doubt that anywhere in the house is more than 10 feet from a sharp knife but I usually have one on my belt anyway.

I have a spare cooking set up with gas bottles in case of extended power outages as well as torches, battery lanterns, candles, hurricane lamps and pressure lamps. I have a large stash of spare batteries for the above as well as charged USB power packs for charging phones and the like.

In the van I have made an a pack with hi viz jackets & foil blankets for all occupants, more field dressings, resuscitation face mask, light sticks, head torches, water & rations. These are all stowed under one seat and are accessible without leaving the vehicle.

so I am curious? do you get a better response than a non alarm holder who dials 999? I mean what actually happens?

Smokeahontas · 31/03/2022 00:11

@TheChosenTwo I buy them and I swear to god I put them in my beside table drawer, yet they’re never there. I live on my own Shock

XenoBitch · 31/03/2022 00:14

Usual smoke alarms, a CO alarm, and an extensive first aid kit (I self harm, so I have loads of supplies).

Pyewhacket · 31/03/2022 00:17

Smoke detectors, fire extinguishers and full first aid kit. We also have a fire door that separates upstairs from downstairs. Wartime thing. Weighs a ton.

LBOCS2 · 31/03/2022 00:20

Mains wired interlinked smoke/heat detectors.

CO2 monitor

Ring camera at the front and back (mostly to nose, but it is a security thing).

First aid kits in the house and the car.

I think that's probably it, tbh...

Notjustanymum · 31/03/2022 00:31

CO2 detector (log burner), smoke detectors. That’s it!

SenecaFallsRedux · 31/03/2022 00:41

Fire alarms, fire extinguishers upstairs and down, first aid kit, rope ladder upstairs that can be hung out of a window, severe weather alert notifications on phones, a pre-planned tornado drill, and a fully stocked hurricane kit.

ArtVandalay · 31/03/2022 00:47

Smoke detectors and a CO detector in the boiler cupboard.

That’s it.

thaegumathteth · 31/03/2022 00:50

We have a small fire extinguisher in the kitchen, a crappy first aid kit, carbon monoxide and smoke / heat alarms. Think that's it . A burglar alarm I suppose if that counts?

safclass · 31/03/2022 01:01

Smoke alarms connected to electrics as have a loft conversion and legally required.
CO2 detector
First aid kit.
Lockable medicine cabinet.
Fire blanket in kitchen (advised not to have extinguisher as encourages people to try and tackle the blaze themselves)
As foster carers we were told to have the last 2 (never had them previously)

Jonny1265 · 31/03/2022 01:30

The scientist in me is getting annoyed at the number of people posting with CO2 detectors when in all likelihood you have CO detectors. Carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide are different and pose significantly different risks.

Geppili · 31/03/2022 01:49

Fire blanket in kitchen

Moody123 · 31/03/2022 02:16

We have smoke alarm , co2 detector and some peppa pig plasters

SoItWas · 31/03/2022 02:16

I have a first aid kit, smoke alarms and a co2 (I think?) alarm.

But then I'm skint atm, or I'd invest in fire extinguishers, etc.

Namaste6 · 31/03/2022 02:31

Fire alarms / first aid kit (if plasters, paracetamol, an in ear thermometer, vitamins and pet metacalm count?) / fire blanket and small fire extinguisher in the kitchen / CO detector / very long and heavy rolling pin and an impressively sharp set of kitchen knives.

Did have one of those door peephole things but covered it with a beautiful door knocker. No house alarm but 4 dogs.

Namaste6 · 31/03/2022 02:35

Oh and a fire blanket - we have two of those for some reason.

Ownedbymycats · 31/03/2022 02:41

I'm lying in bed listening to a cow and hoping to goodness it's not ploughing through my garden. A cow detector would be excellent.

Frannibananni · 31/03/2022 03:01

First aid kit. Fire blanket, fire extinguisher. Smoke alarms.
Water, food and gas rings to cook when needed. (We’ve been stranded by natural disasters before - it’s normal to prepare a little here)
