To ask what you have at home

Was talking with a colleagues yesterday about safety devises at home and they made out that I was kind of over the top with things I have.
They got the house alarm and ring cameras for security outside and things like first aid kits and co2 thingy but started laughing when I told them I had fire extinguishers upstairs and downstairs, with fire blankets in kitchen.
Just wondered what people have in their homes. I'd assumed everyone would have everything they could Hmm

First aid kit, fire and smoke alarms (properly installed), and a fire blanket in the kitchen.

Jillyfernilly · 30/03/2022 11:40

smoke alarm.

I did have a fire blanket previously. I have no idea where it currently is.

I have plasters/ first aid type stuff but not in a dedicated kit.

Ilostit · 30/03/2022 11:42

Fire extinguisher downstairs and fire blanket. First aid kits. Smoke and Carbon Monoxide alarms and a heat alarm in the kitchen. No cctv or ring.

Characterisartion · 30/03/2022 11:43

we have:

first aid kit box for the house
car first aid kit
blankets
seatbelt cutter in the car too (in glove box)
fire alarms -smoke kind
heat alarms in some rooms where smoke alarms would be inappropriate (kitchen etc)
Co2 alarm due to the fuel type we have
spare set of house keys centrally located (hidden) which could hopefully be accessed if we could not get to our house keys as we lock doors at night and there's no turn knob
security cameras for high value items stored outside
emergency power generator
spare tyres for the car x4 which are rotated yearly to even out wear and tear
fire extinghuisher
fire blanket

i'd thought most normal families have this stuff as the basics of running an orderly, safe home. Confused
we did not buy an emergecy escape ladder for the upper floor, but most of my friends would have one i'd think - i wouldn't know where to go for it if i was staying over though.

i'm a bit shocked that some folk don't have most of this as basic life survival stuff in their homes and cars with small children around.

robocracker · 30/03/2022 11:43

Smoke alarms. That's all

In our caravan we do have a fire blanket and fire extinguisher which I insisted on. Not sure why I'm not so bothered at home 🤷🏻‍♀️ something to think about!

robocracker · 30/03/2022 11:44

Oh actually we have a security light on the garage! Our neighbours have cctv though and it covers our whole shared driveway so would be overkill for us to get it too!

Sheilaroundthefountain · 30/03/2022 11:44

Smoke alarms on each floor, carbon monoxide alarm I think just on the top floor, paracetamol, ibrufen, plasters but there in my husbands work bag, which I learned recently when I sliced my thumb. I think that’s all

Characterisartion · 30/03/2022 11:45

oh yes we also have a legal break glass tool hidden in the garden at the french doors for emergencies if there was a house fire and we couldn't get back inside. i won't go into details but you don't want to be in a house filling with smoke standing outside a lower bedroom window and having to scramble around to find rocks to break the window to get your kids out safely.Sad

viques · 30/03/2022 11:46

Co2 monitor, heat alarm in kitchen, smoke alarms elsewhere, various bits of first aid equipment, high viz tabards in the car, breakdown triangle in the car. I used to have a fire extinguisher in the boot but one day the safety strip broke and it went off.

Triotriotrio · 30/03/2022 11:47

I have smoke alarms, a house alarm, co2 detectors, cctv cameras oyr the back, electric gate, 3x first aid kits (Inc one in the car), fire blankets and a fire extinguisher. I have also done fire exit plans with my children. Can you tell this is my area of work?! 🤣

CheekySwifter · 30/03/2022 11:48

We just have a smoke alarm. As a child my childminder had a fire blanket in the kitchen but not seen anyone else with this before or since.

Girlmumdogmumboymum · 30/03/2022 11:53

Fire alarm on every floor, c02 alarms,
Ring on front and back of the house (installed after someone tried to break in with teenage DD and dog here)
Boxer for noise security.

We have first aid kits but more for the fact that I need one when I go to work, and I'm a freelancer so there's always a spare one in tge house.

RobotValkyrie · 30/03/2022 11:53

Anyone with a gas boiler should at least have carbon monoxide (CO) detectors. Anything less is reckless. They're cheap, they're portable (useful if you're renting), they save lives, there's zero reasons not to have one.

Regular smoke alarms are really recommended too. Mandatory if you're renting, I think? No sensible reason for home owners to not have one installed as well. It's basic building safety. Just as vital as wearing a car seat belt. You mostly don't need it, until you do...

UrslaB · 30/03/2022 11:54

Smoke alarms, a fire blanket in the kitchen, fire extinguishers upstairs and downstairs and a compact fire ladders to get out the second story windows in each bedroom.

I grew up hearing horror stories from my fire fighter uncles about kids and families burning alive or being seriously injured in house fires. When I got my first home they gifted me a fire ladder and my first fire extinguisher. I have always maintained them and bought extras as needed since.

As for security cameras and ring door bells etc...If I lived somewhere more rural I might be inclined to use these but in an urban environment I find the big brother vibes a bit much. The ways they can be hacked or abused and the privacy issues (see a recent court case about the ring doorbell) has always made me hesitent to get them. Good home insurance, sturdy locks on doors, side gate, oil tank, shed etc. and a peep hole in front door are the extent of external security.

SirVixofVixHall · 30/03/2022 11:55

Mains smoke alarms that link up, as my house is four storeys. Fire extinguisher and blanket in the kitchen. CO1 alarms downstairs, in the kitchen and in the sitting room with the boiler. First aid kit with basics.

takingmytimeonmyride · 30/03/2022 11:55

Smoke alarms, co2 alarms, first aid kit that is replenished frequently as 2 of us are always injuring ourselves. The first aid kit comes out with us if I remember.

Characterisartion · 30/03/2022 11:56

You mostly don't need it, until you do...

exactly.

Bootothegoose · 30/03/2022 11:59

Jesus.

A fire alarm and some Peppa Pig plasters?

We have the usual paracetamol, calpol, sudocreme etc but I wouldn't even say we have a first aid kit or medicine cabinet!

I might buy a fire extinguisher and fire blanket along with first aid kit. There's no reason for us NOT to have one I suppose.

TheOrigRights · 30/03/2022 12:00

Think about it again. Do you really regard an emergency power generator and security cameras as basic requirements?
MenopauseSucks · 30/03/2022 12:01

Smoke alarms x 2
Carbon monoxide alarms x 2
Security alarm system
Ring doorbell
Fire blanket & extinguisher in the kitchen
Pretty comprehensive first aid kit
Post- Covid
BP monitor
Decent thermometer
Pulse-Oximeter

I'm a glass half-empty kinda gal...

BeforeGodAndAllTheFish · 30/03/2022 12:02

I impulse bought fire blankets and extinguishers in IKEA. So I have those!
And first aid kit is pretty standard really. I have an alarm system that the previous owner installed but I didnt keep up the contract with the security company so it will make a lot of noise but no one is coming out to catch burlgars if it goes off.

Notwithittoday · 30/03/2022 12:04

Smoke alarms, first aid kit, quite a well stocked medicine cabinet, carbon monoxide alarms

VampireMoney · 30/03/2022 12:05

Painkillers, plasters, I think there's an elastic stocking in there too. Thermometer. Smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector. That's it.

Fimofriend · 30/03/2022 12:05

Smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarm, first aid kit, usual medicines, fire blanket, extinguisher.

CanIHaveASnaaaaak · 30/03/2022 12:07
