to think Will Smith should be stripped of his Oscar?

BloodyloveGeorge · 28/03/2022 16:52

The Academy is supposed to have a code of conduct ( post Weinstein) so can take his Oscar away.
Given that this was a blatant assault, and a clear case of toxic masculinity at it's worst, he should lose his Oscar. He's not a role model, his behaviour isn't something that should be celebrated. There should be consequences for this example of violence.
Even a 6 year old knows you can't punch someone because they say something you don't like.

I think he should have been removed from the ceremony, but I dont think he should have his Oscar retroactively removed.

SofiaSoFar · 28/03/2022 18:44

I don't care. Can't believe shite like this is on the news.

BBC absolutely milked it to death at 6pm.

Clarabe1 · 28/03/2022 18:45

I couldn’t give a toss about the Oscars. I was howling. I thought it was hilarious. The only one who came out of with any dignity was Jada.

moonbedazzled · 28/03/2022 18:45

@neverbeenskiing

People saying its not linked are missing the point that the oscars who awarded it to him have a code of conduct that applies to people who have won an award from them- of course they can take it if they want.

And if they want to take Will Smith's oscar away for slapping Chris Rock, but they don't want to take Polanski's away for drugging and raping a child then what does that tell you?

And what does it say about Meryl Streep giving Polanski a standing ovation for his oscar?

If you're looking for morality in Hollywood, you'll have a loooong search.

AnnesBrokenSlate · 28/03/2022 18:45

I don't think he should be stripped of his Oscar. Oscars aren't given for being role models. They are for acting in a role. Will Smith deserves it for his acting.

The violence was inexcusable. I think he should apologise to Chris Rock and I think he should commit to dealing with whatever is going on his life whether through anger management counselling or rehab. I also think it would send a strong message if he was investigated by the police. But the Academy and LA are adept at minimising abuse by famous male figures in Hollywood so I'm not holding my breath.

Marcipex · 28/03/2022 18:45

I personally think Jada should have walloped him one, but as long as someone did.
Arrogant little jerk.

Loopytiles · 28/03/2022 18:46

The victim should be consulted, but shouldn’t determine whether the authorities press charges.

It’s not in the public interest to do nothing when a violent crime is committed.

SofiaSoFar · 28/03/2022 18:50

@SmallPrawnEnergy

I’m sick of posts about this but if one more person says “I don’t condone violence but”…. You’re literally condoning violence by adding this “but”. If a woman had made this joke and he slapped her would you still be saying “but”?
Rebel Wilson took the piss out of Smith's wife at the BAFTAs.

I wonder if they think she deserved a punch in the face?

SaxendaSummer · 28/03/2022 18:50

Probably scuppered his career because he had no control over his violence

Wonder what he's like behind closed doors!

JimmyShoo · 28/03/2022 18:53

I wouldn’t want my husband to defend me, if I’ve got something to say I’ll say it myself.
I would seriously consider divorcing him if he hit someone else in my defence.

I thought what CR said was a disgrace (although to be honest I wouldn’t have got the ‘joke’) but the violence and aggression shown by WS was hideous.

Those defending him appear to think that verbal assault isn’t okay but physical is?

Morfil · 28/03/2022 18:56

I’d suspect that the thinking is that violence against black men is okay if they are perceived to be asking for it, but never against white women.

whynotwhatknot · 28/03/2022 18:57

No not when people like polanski and mel gibson still keep theirs

AlternativePerspective · 28/03/2022 18:57

Firstly, nobody punched anyone, it was a slap. Far different, and while not ok a slap is nowhere near along the same lines as a punch. But people seem to be saying punched because it adds further drama.

Secondly, what Rock and smith did is the same IMO. Emotional abuse is the same as violence, and essentially mocking someone because of their illness is emotional abuse, so essentially it could be said that Chris Rock threw the first slap.

And I’ve seen elsewhere that the person getting the most abuse over this is Will Smith’s wife, this is what I’ve been reading on twitter and fb: “ Will Smith at this point is completely broken.
He is not the bad guy here.

Jada is pulling all the strings.

She broke down his masculinity on television during a talk about why she cheated on him. Her excuse was “If he loved me enough he would’ve known”.

I think that Will Smith whole heartedly did not care about the joke Chris Rock made at the Oscars, but Jada looks over at Will once the camera pans away, as if to say
“if you dont stand up for me, this is why i cheated”

Keep toxic women out of your life because it can turn nice dudes into monsters”

sst1234 · 28/03/2022 18:57

It is staged. Can’t believe anyone would call for the fake drama. Two actors acting at a movie awards show. Who even knew Oscars were taking place last night. Well we all sure do now. The stunt worked.

Wheresthebeach · 28/03/2022 18:58

None of this was about defending his wife. He laughed at the joke. Then got violent. Anyone else would be charged with assault. Millionaire, male privilege. Revolting behaviour.

If she was offended, they should have left. That would have sent a much better message than being a bully.

LondonWolf · 28/03/2022 18:58

I think Will and Jade have a toxic marriage and I think Chris Rock got some fall out from that taken out on him last night.

No he shouldn't have his Oscar removed but he shouldn't have been allowed to go up and collect it last night after what he did.

MuggleMadness · 28/03/2022 18:59

@OppsUpsSide

No, he slapped another equally matched male for making a joke at the expense of his wife 🤷🏻‍♀️
I'm with you!

He slapped him, I wouldn't have blamed him if he'd punched him properly.

I don't care if it was scripted, he didn't have to say it.

What did scare me though was how quickly he changed from laughing to slapping to the way he spoke to him. I hope he's not like that behind closed doors.

The Oscar isn't a star chart for 'good behaviour'... it's an award for achievement.

whynotwhatknot · 28/03/2022 18:59

If people think wills career is over youre having a laugh mel gibson carries on like hes not a drunk racist chris brow gets recording deals after beating rihanna

WAKE UP SHEEPLE!!!!!

There’s always one…

MrsLargeEmbodied · 28/03/2022 19:00

he should have been taken out of the building after that hit

VeganGod · 28/03/2022 19:00

Why do we call these types of words comedy, instead of what they are, which is verbal abuse?

Verbal abuse should be as looked down upon as physical, but instead we normalise it by having it at large events like the Oscars and celebrating it as ‘comedy’ and anyone that doesn’t like it is called a snowflake and told they can’t take a joke.

I hope this incident puts a stop to these ‘comedians’.

clarepetal · 28/03/2022 19:00

@teaandtoastwithmarmite

He defended his wife against an idiot saying twatty things about her. I applaud him. I don't condone violence but Rock was verbally abusing his wife.

I agree with this. She looked really upset.

Are you serious? Of course people knew about the Oscars, it’s the biggest award show in history. It doesn’t need to raise its profile by having an awkward, violent interchange between two people on the back of a shit, offensive joke.
Blossomtoes · 28/03/2022 19:01

And what does it say about Meryl Streep giving Polanski a standing ovation for his oscar?

It says she’s a highly intelligent human being who is capable of separating an individual’s work from their personal life.

maddiemookins16mum · 28/03/2022 19:01

So if it had been Rebel Wilson making the same joke and he smacked her, would that also be ok. He is forever tarnished by this. Idiot.
