to think Will Smith should be stripped of his Oscar?

The Academy is supposed to have a code of conduct ( post Weinstein) so can take his Oscar away.
Given that this was a blatant assault, and a clear case of toxic masculinity at it's worst, he should lose his Oscar. He's not a role model, his behaviour isn't something that should be celebrated. There should be consequences for this example of violence.
Even a 6 year old knows you can't punch someone because they say something you don't like.

@BloodyloveGeorge

'Unlikely given that the Academy allows people like Woody Allen and Roman Polanski to be nominated and win.'

Even more reason for them to start changing the narrative. And repugnant as I find both of those 2 men their guilt isn't as clear cut, unfortunately.

What?

Roman Polanski's absolutely was very clear cut.

Sex with a minor is way worse than punching an offensive idiot

Morfil · 28/03/2022 18:33

@southeastdweller

The PP you quote was plainly referring to Chris Rock’s joke - not to Smith’s actions.

Loopytiles · 28/03/2022 18:33

No, but he should be charged with assault.

neverbeenskiing · 28/03/2022 18:33

No. Being a child rapist doesn't take away anything from Roman Polanski's artistry in The Pianist and being deserving of his Oscar. How many people here have seen King Richard? He was mediocre and unconvincing but then he's always been a limited actor.

I'm not sure I understand your point. Are you saying that Polanski shouldn't be stripped of his Oscar for raping a child because you think he's talented, but Will Smith should be stripped of his Oscar for a lesser offence because you don't think he's very good? Sorry if I've misunderstood.

Pumperthepumper · 28/03/2022 18:34

I honestly think the victims in this are Jada Pinkett Smith for being between these two dickheads, and Venus and Serena Williams who can’t get an award ceremony without some kind of shitty behaviour.

neverbeenskiing · 28/03/2022 18:34

No, but he should be charged with assault

The victim declined to press charges, as is his right.

Theluggage15 · 28/03/2022 18:35

Rock has to run through all of his ‘jokes’ and get them vetted before the live event. The fact he left this ‘joke’ out shows that he’s a nasty piece of work that wanted to humiliate her for whatever reason. He got away lightly.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 28/03/2022 18:35

Defended his wife?! That's why he laughed until seeing her reaction then reacted. He needs to be charged with assault at the very least.

Loopytiles · 28/03/2022 18:36

The victim shouldn’t be required to ‘press charges’. The police should do so. Will Smith committed a crime, on camera and with many witnesses.

Theluggage15 · 28/03/2022 18:36

The Pianist was a load of old tripe!

TastyM · 28/03/2022 18:37

I don’t agree with this culture of making jokes at peoples expense and ridiculing them for a living! We speak out against bullying for our children however in the name of jokes… insults and below the belt kicks happen all the time.

Kudo’s to Will for taking a stand and defending his wife. He open palm slapped his face. I think there are times this is appropriate.

Will laughed at the ‘joke’ not because it was funny because it wasn’t. He was trying to keep in good spirits, but then he saw Jada and she was not laughing. This has been hard for her. This is when Will decided to get up and defend her.

Will and Chris spoke and cleared things up afterwards at the after party. Chris is in hot water over the joke as he never had it vetted by the academy awards and he threw that one in for a personal dig.

Polanski was convicted of a horrific string of offences involving the abuse of a 13 year old. He was 43 at the time. He took a plea bargain then fled the US when he caught a whiff of a jail sentence. He's evaded justice ever since. That's pretty damn clear cut from where I'm standing.
Tiredmum100 · 28/03/2022 18:38

The work and the person are separate? I'm a nurse. If I slapped somebody out side of work I'd most likely be up in front of the NMC and struck off. The work and the person still separate? I don't think so personally.

That was then, this is now

There really isn't.

Exactly!
WomblingWilma · 28/03/2022 18:39

I do hope my DH would smack someone in the mouth for singling me out and joking about a very distressing medical condition I had on international TV in front of millions of people.

A natural reaction and thoroughly deserved. If he hadn’t done it, no one would have batted an eyelid about what Rock said I bet. Maybe he’ll think twice about what he says next time. I saw JP’s face and I bet that felt like a slap to her.

I find it sickening that we sit and watch the invasion of Ukraine carrying on with adults and children being murdered in their homes but some people are up in arms about someone getting a single slap on TV.

Go figure.

Morfil · 28/03/2022 18:39

Well then I think you need to accept that men should be able to make their own decisions as to when violence is or isn’t appropriate.

Theluggage15 · 28/03/2022 18:40

Interesting how some people are minimising what Polanski did but seem very irate about a slap.

TellySavalashairbrush · 28/03/2022 18:41

No opinion on Oscar removal, but I think Will Smith and his wife are very mediocre actors and extremely lucky to have done as well for themselves as they have.

WomanStanleyWoman · 28/03/2022 18:42

So the victim doesn’t get a say?
azimuth299 · 28/03/2022 18:42

I don't think so. The Oscar should be given to the best actor, or it's meaningless. Should he suffer consequences? Yes I think so. He should have been removed from the room, and the damage to his reputation will affect the work that he's offered in the future. But it doesn't mean that he suddenly isn't the best actor.

Blossomtoes · 28/03/2022 18:42

I’m bloody glad mine wouldn’t. I’d not only be humiliated and furious, but I’d wonder what the hell I’d married. It’s not the kind of man I’d want in my bed.

SmallPrawnEnergy · 28/03/2022 18:42

I’m sick of posts about this but if one more person says “I don’t condone violence but”…. You’re literally condoning violence by adding this “but”. If a woman had made this joke and he slapped her would you still be saying “but”?

CheesePlantMurderer · 28/03/2022 18:42

Yes. I've seen it. Heard it and cannot believe he acted in that way.
