to think Will Smith should be stripped of his Oscar?

BloodyloveGeorge · 28/03/2022 16:52

The Academy is supposed to have a code of conduct ( post Weinstein) so can take his Oscar away.
Given that this was a blatant assault, and a clear case of toxic masculinity at it's worst, he should lose his Oscar. He's not a role model, his behaviour isn't something that should be celebrated. There should be consequences for this example of violence.
Even a 6 year old knows you can't punch someone because they say something you don't like.

@BloodyloveGeorge

Strip his Oscar and let’s move on from excusing yet more toxic masculinity.
OP, let's go further than that! Shall we boycott his films. Let's threaten anyone who will ever work with him again to boycott those films. Let's actually group together to get Prince of Bel Air off our screens! You start the petition. I'll sign it!

Toxic masculinity! Let's make a t-shirt about it OP! He is the reason the world is going to shit and I stand with you @BloodyloveGeorge

Jade is going to be livid. Especially if she doesn’t actually have alopecia and has hair loss from years of treatment opposed to a diagnosed condition. 30 minutes from million’s of dollars and he won’t be employable now.
Of course he’s employable. Nobody’s dead.
WomanStanleyWoman · 30/03/2022 22:41

@VladmirsPoutine

Of course "thug" has zero contextual sense in the UK. Much the same way Tuesday does not follow Monday.
White men are described as thugs all the time.
lighterskies · 30/03/2022 22:45

He is perfectly employable.
People aren't that fussed about blokes being violent.

He should be fined for his behavior and the organization needs to draw up a clear code of conduct which includes expectations of what will happen if people start hitting other people.

As an aside I think mean jokes about peoples appearance shouldn't be encouraged either.

Both blokes behaved pretty badly.

mustlovegin · 30/03/2022 23:04

Has anyone asked white men that perhaps they might want to consider the fact they should sometimes just say: "sorry, I'm not best place to comment on this

All ethnicities can participate in these awards. White men are as entitled to comment as anyone else, as they are part of this ceremony, why wouldn't they be?

WomanStanleyWoman · 30/03/2022 23:25

My life motto is: "Lord grant me the confidence of a mediocre white person." I don't even want to be 'excellent' I just want the shamelessness that mediocre whites have.

Racist shit.

Yes, the Smith family brand has taken a huge hit. The film offers are going to dry up for him, as they did for her.
Shuuu · 30/03/2022 23:35

Did Chris Rock know about her medical condition? Will smith should have used words instead if he was offended. But it doesn’t appear he was as he laughed initially, then when he saw his wife’s reaction he decided to be the big guy.

Look Chris Rock up, hes suffered awful bullying as a child. He has no confidence. Do we think will smith would have jumped up and smacked let’s say Dwayne Johnson, Eddie Murphy. No! He took advantage of CR, knowing he wouldn’t retaliate. It’s pathetic, disgusting. Then getting up and crying on stage, the audience giving him a standing ovation, using LOVE makes you do crazy things. No he wanted to appear the big man defending his family. I hope he’s stripped of his Oscar.

SofiaSoFar · 31/03/2022 00:02

Smith refused to leave after the incident.

Why didn't security drag him out???

SwanBuster · 31/03/2022 00:28

moonbedazzled · 31/03/2022 00:43

I think people are getting this out of proportion!
Full disclosure, I love Will Smith.
But what he did was totally wrong and it saddens me that so many people think that violence is OK. I think the Academy has to censure him in some way otherwise you could end up with open fisticuffs every year as actors vie over awards!! Although how fab. We could get them stripped to the waist, throw some jello over them and the winner gets the oscar! So much more entertaining than the boring drone fest we have now.

But to keep it in perspective, it was one hit and a couple of swear words. . There's no way it's going to end his career - although it's not been stellar recently. I think Jadas Red Table show will have hurt him a lot more. So let's not catastrophise the events.

Morfil · 31/03/2022 01:52

I agree, I don’t see it as a career-ender by any stretch. It was very wrong and deserving of rebuke but I don’t think he’ll be “cancelled” over it.

If his membership is temporarily suspended, it might rule him out of Oscar-bait roles for the duration.

GoodJanetBadJanet · 31/03/2022 05:01

@womanstanleywoman
That's not racist Hmm
(I'm white as well)

walksen · 31/03/2022 05:27

Hollywood employability is simple I'd say. Will people still go see his films or boycott them?

Based on that, employability is fine - but he may miss out on some roles he may previously have got .

Well it should end his career! If he acts like this in public then fuck knows how he behaves when the cameras aren’t on him! He is an over indulged thug who thinks he can go around doing what he wants because of people like you excusing it, because he’s an actor don’t you know dahling?

spaceman1 · 31/03/2022 07:01

Will Smith is the villain here, I hope his career is over.

Libertybear80 · 31/03/2022 07:13

Two men with massive egos that have got too used to their privileges! I bet his wife is cringing now because I wouldn't have even picked up on the joke before and now everyone knows!

SonicBroom · 31/03/2022 07:26

Colour has nothing to do with it.

Lunar27 · 31/03/2022 07:41

@SonicBroom

Colour has nothing to do with it.
Although many would argue that colour is exactly what's generated a tsunami of social media judgement and discussion.

Noone really talked about Polanski or many other white celebrities. Definitely not as much as Will Smith.

SonicBroom · 31/03/2022 08:02

@Lunar27 so you’re saying that everyone should be able to get away with it, or just that black men should be able to so as to what happened with Polanski? And then does that make what happened with Polanski ok, because we’re all just going to chalk these things up to shit happens? And how many people do we then need to let get away with stuff before we’ve adequately balanced out what happens. And who should then be the first to actually be reprimanded and why?

James OB did s brilliant interview on this on Monday during which a caller argued that Will was right because black women have always been discriminated against on account of their hair. Concluded that if it’s ok for WS to hit someone because they’re offended by something under what circumstances would it not be ok for someone else to do the same thing?

Inkanta · 31/03/2022 08:14

@SofiaSoFar

Smith refused to leave after the incident.

Why didn't security drag him out???

Yes it does seem a bit pathetic that they let WS have his way. No backbone for sure.
Deadringer · 31/03/2022 08:14

Will Smith is a huge star who markets himself as a likeable, affable everyman. He slapped someone live on air at a usually very formal, stuffy ceremony, in front of the entire movie industry and an audiance of millions of people. Of course it got attention, people will never stop talking about it, it has nothing to do with his colour.

southeastdweller · 31/03/2022 08:15

Noone really talked about Polanski or many other white celebrities. Definitely not as much as Will Smith.

Social media wasn't around then, was it? Back when he was arrested and, years later, when he won his Oscar. Same with so many other creeps.

Trixiefirecracker · 31/03/2022 08:16

@Lunar27 Will smith is a huge star, much bigger than Polanski and certainly more well-liked, up until now I guess. He has often portrayed extremely likeable, down to earth (relatable)/comedic characters so I think people feel they ‘know’ him, when they don’t and think that is part of why everyone is so shocked.
