to think Will Smith should be stripped of his Oscar?

The Academy is supposed to have a code of conduct ( post Weinstein) so can take his Oscar away.
Given that this was a blatant assault, and a clear case of toxic masculinity at it's worst, he should lose his Oscar. He's not a role model, his behaviour isn't something that should be celebrated. There should be consequences for this example of violence.
Even a 6 year old knows you can't punch someone because they say something you don't like.

@VariationsonaTheme

Unlikely given that the Academy allows people like Woody Allen and Roman Polanski to be nominated and win.
Absolutely this

@Pumperthepumper

People think they’re both arseholes! It’s not a quirky, funny sketch, it’s two grown men acting like dickheads. If the power of Hollywood wanted better viewing figures, I’m sure they could come up with something better than a shit joke followed by a shit altercation between two people. All for the vague hope that it might improve viewing figures in a year’s time.
Not everyone does, some people are laughing and saying Chris deserved it. Some are on his side, some are on wills, some are on neither. And these are the same kind of minds that come up with naked people interrupting football games etc. It's not the best minds in the world we are talking about. Grin Look at x factor, aren't they 'bringing back' pop idol in a desperate attempt to get figures back up? None of them come up with genius ideas, but it doesn't really need to be either.
Lampzade · 29/03/2022 21:48

The Academy can do sweet FA.
Harvey Weinstein’s perverted behaviour was an open secret in Hollywood. Yet he was still lauded by his peers.
Will Smith ( wrongly imo) punched a guy who upset his wife. The optics will not look good if a black actor has his award taken from him, while many of Hollywood‘s perverts and rapist escape punishment

Morfil · 29/03/2022 21:49

My guess would be Smith keeps his award but his membership with the Academy is suspended for a period of time.

The reason a lot of white people won't stop going on about it is because a lot of them deep down inside really want to vent about how terrible the blacks are but in these days they can't do so whilst maintaining any sort of credibility - so they latch on to any and everything they can. They thought 'Will was one of the good ones' they were 'triggered' they hope he gets his Oscar removed.

This is the thing. They cannot help it.

This in a nutshell A number of Hollywood degenerates including Alec ‘cucumber’ Baldwin have made anti Will Smith comments. Alec Baldwin commented on Twitter that this was like the Jerry Springer Show. This is a man who called his daughter a ‘pig’, has a history of violence and is currently facing a lawsuit for killing a woman on the set of his film. Has a wife who cosplayed at being a Spanish woman for many years Yet he has the audacity to comment on Will Smith Unfortunately, I do believe there is a racial element to the criticism.
Trixiefirecracker · 29/03/2022 22:07

Maybe we should focus on how absolutely lovely Lady Gaga was to Liza, that was a very sweet moment overshadowed by all this macho bullshit.

urbanbuddha · 29/03/2022 22:10

I would be just as appalled if the protagonists were white.

Of course you did.....

it's why you have posted endless posts about silience is violence, and now promoting stay in your lane narrative when it doesn't suit.

You are trying to promote pure IDPOL that is ridiculed on twitter

I reckon this too - hope it's nothing more.

He shouldn't have hit him but I also don't blame him. Chris Rock was vile for making a joke about Jada and I'm glad Will stopped him from going further. Maybe Chris will think twice next time before picking on a woman who is unable to defend herself (at least in that moment).

HRTQueen · 29/03/2022 22:27

I am sure of both involved were white it would still cause a huge amount of discussion

But would the word ghetto been used if it was Ricky Gervais and Tom Cruise or remarks along the lines of what did we expect from them

No

I hadn't seen that. I agree that's disgraceful.
Midlifemusings · 29/03/2022 22:34

LIkely it was scripted / written by writers and part of the set. He was going off a teleprompter. Not sure there has been any source saying he did this ad hoc. Also apparently he didn't even know she had alopecia and was making a comment about her bald head - aka GI Jane's bald head.

I don't think Will should be stripped of the Oscar but there should be a consequence and it should have been handled really differently from the get go. In addition to this being post Code of Conduct - it also happened at the Oscars versus being something an act of violence unrelated to the Oscars.

Chris Rock looked shocked and initially he starte d to say another joke / roast. He clearly didn't even know why what he had said made Will so upset or why he had been slapped. Then it seems someone in his earpiece told him to not finish the joke and move on.

Will seems to really need some mental health support. His private life is all over the internet, his kids have their own struggles, his marriage seems to be unhealthy and he has anger management issues. Too bad Scientology is against mental health support - he clearly needs it.

Midlifemusings · 29/03/2022 22:40

@Lampzade

There is a ton of criticism of Baldwin and his wife online. Baldwin has criticized others many times despite his own massive failings. There are a lot of narcissists in Hollywood and so you see many not taking responsibility for themself while pointing the finger at others. Criticism of someone slapping someone and yelling at them is not racism. The response to WIll was very muted and positive at the Oscars. He went on to accept the award, give a speech, get an ovation, be comforted by his peers. It was actually shocking how accepted it was. He was out partying after it happened. The criticism is well deserved.

Morfil · 29/03/2022 22:40

I’m not sure there’s been much of that in this thread though? There has been use of the word ‘thug’ but I don’t know if that term is racialized in the UK as it is in the US?

Horst · 29/03/2022 23:32

I deem a thug as anyone who’s acting like a dick out of control and harming others.

Ghetto isn’t a word I can say I’ve ever said or written untill this very sentence I’m guessing is very much an American thing? More chav or whatever in the U.K.

I wish I could get this through to my six year old misses point of thread

To the people stressing that a slap is different from a punch, this is also the strong opinion of my six year old. He is still on a long iPad ban for punching ('it's not the same as hitting!' Actually it is).

okayigetit · 30/03/2022 09:45

@JacquelineCarlyle in what way was she unable to defend herself? She could have got up on that stage and taken the mic and stood up for herself with her words if she really wanted to

okayigetit · 30/03/2022 09:48

@Blackmagicqueen

"You think he deserved worse than to be physically assaulted? For saying words? Wow."

Words are extremely hurtful too and shouldn't be downplayed.

You do know that not only does assault hurt, but assault, including slapping, can cause death? You think that some hurtful words are worse then that? And that something that can cause death is an acceptable response to language? ..yikes

Words can kill too e.g if it leads to suicide.

The justification for violence on this thread is deeply worrying and disturbing. No wonder so many women are battered for what they say, do, or wear. Honest to God we're in a mess if we think it's okay to be hitting someone for a crap joke. I also think it's millionaires privilege not to be up on assault charges.

I don't think violence is justified but I also don't like the way Chris Rock's really nasty bullying comment are being minimised. A joke should be funny. It is not funny to mock people because of their medical condition, particularly one which can cause huge psychological distress and has been associated with an increased risk of suicide.

They're both founded upon racism. Thug came from Thugees and British Colonial Rule over India, Ghetto originated in European antisemitism but transferred over the Atlantic and was then applied to black people and the way they were treated, becoming a stereotype of racist perceptions of behaviour, attitude and lifestyle.

And Chav, well, that's a mixture of class and racism - depending how much somebody wants to claim they aren't racist towards Gypsies, Travellers & Roma people.
