to think Will Smith should be stripped of his Oscar?

The Academy is supposed to have a code of conduct ( post Weinstein) so can take his Oscar away.
Given that this was a blatant assault, and a clear case of toxic masculinity at it's worst, he should lose his Oscar. He's not a role model, his behaviour isn't something that should be celebrated. There should be consequences for this example of violence.
Even a 6 year old knows you can't punch someone because they say something you don't like.

If it was fake, and I'm not convinced it wasn't, it would have been the academy that set it up. I mean here we are, still talking about it two days later. Usually no one gives a damn a day later about the oscars, and this year publicity for them has been covered by other more important news. It's worked well for them if it was a fake.
Yes, a magnificent ploy, that might significantly hurt the careers of Smith and Rock, and is shining a light on all the sins of the Academy’s past winners and how they have gone unpunished. I bet the Academy are delighted.

Butteryflakycrust83 · 29/03/2022 16:41

No he shouldnt.

White people need to shut up about it frankly.

Trixiefirecracker · 29/03/2022 17:11

@SwanBuster is that you Will? 😂

AllOfUsAreDead · 29/03/2022 17:15

@Pumperthepumper

No it didn’t, nobody came out of that well. And ‘no one gives a damn about a day later about the oscars’ is just false, it’s the biggest awards show in Hollywood.
Hollywood cares, the rest of the world? Not so much.

They won't care though, even bad publicity is publicity. It's not like it's going to get cancelled, it didn't after weinstein and it won't now. If anything they may have more people watching next year hoping to witness another fight.

The category I put him in here is ‘rich male movie star’ along with all the entitlement and privilege that breeds. He can keep the Oscar, along with all the other ‘rich male movie stars’ and their respective bad behaviour too. The patriarchy is fully functioning, nothing to see here.

Why?

Yes, why?

Pumperthepumper · 29/03/2022 18:01

@AllOfUsAreDead again, that’s not true, the Oscars are a multi-million dollar industry. Designers will already be working on gowns for Oscars years from now, films put a huge amount of budget into generating oscar interest. It’s not exactly some tiny bash in a bowling club, it’s a massive business. They absolutely do not need two grown men making twats of themselves for people to talk about it.

WomanStanleyWoman · 29/03/2022 18:04

@Butteryflakycrust83

Pathetic.
Horst · 29/03/2022 18:06

White people shouldn’t have an option on violence and punishing violence because it was a black man?

That’s the craziest thing I’ve heard. So we need to have separate jury’s and judges and police officers depending on one’s colour? Maybe different hospitals too for medical treatment.

Sounds like something from history that segregation.

SmudgeRolls · 29/03/2022 18:38

Why has this become about race?
Pathetic !!!!

elgreco · 29/03/2022 18:42

He should keep the Oscar, others have done far worse. The arts are full of arseholes. If he has committed a crime it should be dealt with separately.

It's important to that small group of people, the world is a lot bigger than just them. Can guarantee once people get bored of the talk of will Smith slapping Chris rock, no one will be discussing the oscars in pubs or restaurants or anywhere really, other than if you're involved in it and even then, you hopefully have more interests.

I'd bet most people couldn't name another winner of the oscars this year. Or any other year other than obvious ones. Because it's not interesting for everyday people.

Pumperthepumper · 29/03/2022 19:32

But what do the Oscars get from random people in the pub talking about them?

The entire film industry is not a small group of people, by the way.

VladmirsPoutine · 29/03/2022 20:00

Posted too soon.

The reason a lot of white people won't stop going on about it is because a lot of them deep down inside really want to vent about how terrible the blacks are but in these days they can't do so whilst maintaining any sort of credibility - so they latch on to any and everything they can. They thought 'Will was one of the good ones' they were 'triggered' they hope he gets his Oscar removed.

This is the thing. They cannot help it.

AllOfUsAreDead · 29/03/2022 20:03

@Pumperthepumper

Well, it is in comparison to the other 7 billion people in the world...

Even if you just take America as an example, roughly 257,000 people were in the film industry last year apparently. Out of 329,500,000 people in the USA (according to 2020 stats, it will be more now). So only they care about it, the other 329million people don't as much. And even those in the film industry won't talk about the oscars forever after it, maybe the next day, but then they'd move on with their lives and discuss other stuff.

VladmirsPoutine · 29/03/2022 20:04

For milenia white people have been accusing black people of things they just didn't do. For all the shit about Weinstein and RP there is no talk of stripping them of their awards. But Black people it's a different story. They must not only pay their dues, but be also respectful and mule-like, and also grateful. If they step out of that line they should be punished.

Will's main crime in all this (and let's put aside colourism and featurism and texturism as white people don't understand those nuances) is that Will Smith is black and here is another public black figure to flog. Imagine if you will if Obama had conducted his presidency in the way Trump did -Obama would currently be in guantanamo bay. That's the reason. White people being white.

Pumperthepumper · 29/03/2022 20:05

@AllOfUsAreDead but what do they get out of random people in a pub in Wolverhampton talking about an incident that happened?

Justanotherlurker · 29/03/2022 20:06

White people need to shut up about it frankly.

But they won't.

MN has reached peak IDPOL that is only really seen by bots on Twitter.

Pushing a narrative of you're racist if you care about black on black violence and also racist if you don't care about black on black violence.

I'm not white btw, I've already been called an apparent 'non racist' term 'uncle tom' many times, but seeing this level of stay in your lane shite on what used to be an intelligent forum is turning it into a joke.

SwanBuster · 29/03/2022 20:19

For me, I don’t think anyone is being racist so much as lacking compassion and empathy. We can see that despite the numerous breadcrumbs I’ve dropped - zero of the mob want to follow and educate themselves as to the background of Will Smith’s relationship history.

If they did and then let their minds open to imagine themselves in a person who has been emotionally pushed beyond fair limits, then they would surely see things alternatively.

But they can’t, and at this point I can only presume it’s because they themselves are scared to try and grow - potentially because they lack intellectual capacity - and wish to wallow in a fixed mindset. It is sad but what can you do.

Tupac would never have allowed himself to restrict his vision like this. We should learn from him.

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 29/03/2022 20:21

I don’t think that Will Smith should have his oscar taken away from him

And I’m not going to stop thinking it or saying it in real life or on here just because I am white

bumblingbovine49 · 29/03/2022 20:23

@Trixiefirecracker

Does he love Jada though? They are a truly messed up family, airing all their affairs and general bad behaviour out to dry in front of their children and the world. Seems to me he has little respect for Jada either, he was laughing at the joke until he saw Jada’s face…
I'm pretty certain he was laughing politely as he didn't quite click what the joke meant immediately. Then he realised what it meant and also saw how upset his wife was. His embarrassment at laughing probably fed into the overreaction. A much better reaction would have been say how beautiful his wife to the audience and to tell Chris how out of order he was - but calmly. Then go back and sit down. That way he would have been standing up for his wife without violence but he is human and messed up because his emotions got out of control.. I can't really get the energy up to judge him too harshly. A bit of me thinks Chris Rock had it coming though mostly I think Will probably overreacted . Chris is probably within his rights to sue or something but I don't think it warrants any other sanctions. Nobody was really hurt, though Chris was probably a bit shocked and embarrassed.
@AllOfUsAreDead but what do they get out of random people in a pub in Wolverhampton talking about an incident that happened?
They'll likely watch it next year hoping for someone to bitch slap someone else, or maybe it will go further and be an actual punch this time. So then the ratings go up and the academy are happy.
