I'm a bit on the fence at the moment but shocked from watching this - wondered what others think?

YABU Will Smith had every right to wallop Chris. His wife was clearly deeply insulted. He deserved it.
YANBU Chris was just reading from a script and didn't deserve such a public assault.

@Kendodd

Can't believe 25% of people think it's ok to slap people Shock Violence is NEVER ok.
I beg to disagree.

I’d use violence in self-defence or to protect my child. No question.

FairyLightPups · 28/03/2022 08:13

To be honest I don't care. It's the second Oscars Rock has made a joke about Jada. Ableism isn't funny.

Kendodd · 28/03/2022 08:14

It would have been a much more powerful statement if WS & JP had got up and walked out.

Cocolapew · 28/03/2022 08:14

I'm really shocked at this, I reckon Will will be in a 'facility' within 24 hours.

notanothertakeaway · 28/03/2022 08:15

The joke was shit. Personal attacks on individual's appearance is never ok

Ironically, WS turned it into a far bigger story. I didn't know his wife's name, or that she has alopecia

WizzardPjs · 28/03/2022 08:15

I think there is more going on behind the scenes with Will Smith than we know about. He looks like he’s on the edge.

He’s just been on the red carpet for photographs and although he’s smiling it’s certainly not reaching his eyes. Who knows what’s going on with him.

Plus, who doesn’t want to smack Chris Rock?

FionnulaTheCooler · 28/03/2022 08:15

Will Smith is a dick and deserves to face legal charges for that assault, although I doubt he will. No excuse for a grown man to walk over and hit someone, he seriously needs to grow up and learn some self control.

MorrisZapp · 28/03/2022 08:15

Surely the whole thing was a set up? On the stills I've seen both men are smiling.

BurntEnds · 28/03/2022 08:16

I wouldn't be surprised if they take it off him

sst1234 · 28/03/2022 08:16

It’s staged, folks. Because it got people talking, right?

luckylavender · 28/03/2022 08:17

I don't. Fed up of hearing about it already.

There is absolutely no way Will Smith would agree to stage that. He's quite a sharp guy when it comes to his image and interviews.
notinherethen · 28/03/2022 08:18

Will Smith laughed at first

Its actually a common reaction when people say something we don't like, especially if the person is making a 'joke' and especially, especially if others are laughing. Its takes time to process what is happening and to halt those feelings of shame or confusion that your laughter is hiding, and to acknowledge to yourself that its ok to feel angry or insulted.

In a way, I actually admire Will Smith for his reaction. But I recognise that my response is formed by having being married to man who never stood up for me and always left me to face insult and abuse alone. I guess there was little option for Will to 'have a quiet word', he wanted to publicly defend his wife who had just been insulted in front of hundreds of millions of people. He must have been raging.

The guy was a dick to make that joke.

Horst · 28/03/2022 08:19

I mean the joke may not be funny but will just looks like a dick now. Maybe jada should of stayed home with one of her entanglements and he should of kept his hands to himself.

These things are known for crappy jokes and jabs at the very celebs there hoping to gain an award. Don’t like it don’t go. Nobody forced anyone to be there.

Chonfox · 28/03/2022 08:19

Jesus... what a disappointment. Always admired Will and I would never have put him down as a thug. Does she have cancer or something? That's the only "excuse" I can fathom for his reaction? He made an idiot out of himself and his wife always seemed a bit of an oddball so I'm not exactly surprised she can't take a joke.

I imagine he'll face assault charges now and he should.

GahAndTheBear · 28/03/2022 08:19

If it was staged, then the poor judgement by everyone involved is astounding.
RegardingMary · 28/03/2022 08:19

It was a shit joke. Maybe explained if Chris rock didn't know about the alopecia, until I saw the story I didn't.
Being referred to as looking similar to the stunning Demi Moore wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. But I can understand how it would be upsetting if you've got alopecia.
Even so, I think when you've all that money and you'd sat at those awards it's to be expected a joke will be made.

The response was horrific. He was laughing until he saw his wife's face. Then went from 0 to 100. The way he approached him on stage so calmly then just swung and sat back down was like watching a psychopath. He should have been made to leave and a real stance be taken against violence.

He's an utterly disgusting human and I'd be surprised if this was his first violent outburst like this. I think its likely a lot will come out in thd next few days.

RitaFires · 28/03/2022 08:19

I don't think Will is doing very well emotionally at the moment and I imagine he's very sensitive to jokes about his wife and marriage after it was revealed that she cheated on him. Violence is never acceptable but Chris Rock is careful to target people that he thinks won't say or do anything. Will is worse for snapping but neither of them are the good guy in this.

AuntieMarys · 28/03/2022 08:19

If you think hitting someone is the right response, you should look at yourself long and hard.

WizzardPjs · 28/03/2022 08:19

You really think Will Smith would agree to pretend to assault someone, sit shouting out swear words and then cry on stage apologising … for publicity?

Yeah sure

tigger1001 · 28/03/2022 08:20

I'm more surprised it hasn't happened before. These so called "jokes" are not funny and no one deserves to be roasted like that for fun.

It doesn't excuse what will smith did though.

Franticbutterfly · 28/03/2022 08:20

I honestly can't decide what I think about it. My DH reckons Will did what every man would've wanted to do in the situation, but most wouldn't for fear or reprisals.

I think Will shall come to regret it. Hitting shows a lack of control.

Unanananana · 28/03/2022 08:20

They are both twats. Will Smith should never have resorted to violence. The police have already said there is no report therefore they will do nothing.

However, it was quite satisfying to see Chris Rock get a slap that he richly deserved. His 'comedy' is dull and offensive. His face after the unplanned whack was quite hilarious.

LethargeMarg · 28/03/2022 08:20

There are a lot of rumours and blind items about will and jada. There's even a lot of bonkers stuff they have publicly aired . He could have made a much funnier and subtler joke about that than a personal appearance one. I think will made himself look a dick and has lost any moral high ground .

Chilver · 28/03/2022 08:21

There is no way its staged - public violence, in today's climate, following the #metoo movement? If it was staged, it should have been JP-S reacting, publicly defending herself.

And where are the public apologies to JP-S from CR, from the Academy, even from WS? Seeing the joke was at her expense, all of them should be apologising to her for the joke, and WS's reaction. Bunch of misogynistic, middle aged men who think the world revolves around them.
