I'm a bit on the fence at the moment but shocked from watching this - wondered what others think?

YABU Will Smith had every right to wallop Chris. His wife was clearly deeply insulted. He deserved it.
YANBU Chris was just reading from a script and didn't deserve such a public assault.

Did Chris rock even know she had alopecia?

Or did he just think the shaved head was a new look?

Will smith should be arrested.

Quirrelsotherface · 28/03/2022 20:49

For me the aggressive shouting and swearing from his seat was almost worse than the slap itself. He completely lost the plot.

This insulting people to get laughs is getting really old too now though, the shock tactics.

Both in the wrong but Will Smith's behaviour was a disgrace. Makes you wonder if that's the real him we saw.

YouOKHun · 28/03/2022 20:50

@EmeraldShamrock1

Ricky Gervais tweeted a sketch from the office where he made a joke about alopecia and an unhappy home.

Not good.

But that’s not a sketch, it’s a line from a series about the crassness and desperation of one man and the line is a comment on the idiocy of David Brent and his type in showing ignorance about Alopecia and having no social filter. It’s not the same as public “joke” ridiculing one individual’s alopecia.

I’m not Ricky Gervais’s fan club by the way and I think he says a lot of offensive things. He’s said himself that there is nothing off limits. That tweet may have been more a comment on Chris Rock’s appropriateness than it was about endorsing the joke.

Quirrelsotherface · 28/03/2022 20:50

And Jada PS has always had really short cropped hair, for like 20 years or more so I don't get the joke or the reaction to that, either?

He said a few swear words. Get a grip.
AlandAnna · 28/03/2022 20:57

Both men should know better. Total embarrassment both. I’d be furious and ashamed if my husband had done this on my behalf.

DrManhattan · 28/03/2022 22:14

Will Smith doesn't look well at the moment. Not trying to defend him but is he on something?

Wolfie12 · 28/03/2022 22:25

Not a fan of either but felt sorry forChris Rock.
Those defending Will Smith are deluded.
This was assault on a world wide stage over a very lame joke.
Have you seen Ricky Gervais’s roasting of celebs?
This was so mild in comparison yet the reaction was horrendous and took away the achievements of other winners on the night.
The crocodile tears after and inane rambling of a narcissist who believes he is above the law. Outrageous.

Will smith should be arrested.

He knows now.

Has he apologised to her?

Wolfie12 · 28/03/2022 22:26

Also, not convinced Jade has alopecia. She is very attention-seeking.

Wtf

Convincing you of anything will, I don’t doubt, not be on her list of priorities.

😂

Lbushsgkm · 28/03/2022 22:31

I think there is something about Will’s relationship with Jada that has warped him.

Totally, it was actually horrible, and l’ve avoided watching it again when it’s come up on my SM feeds.
EmeraldShamrock1 · 28/03/2022 22:35

Will smith should be arrested.
Chris Rock is not pressing charges.
Given that CR roasted Jada making a laughing stock of her in 2016 I'd bet it was a long time brewing.

StrawberryStarfish · 28/03/2022 22:39

@NurseBernard I don’t know, I was genuinely asking if he knew when he made the joke

Katya213 · 28/03/2022 23:00

Really bad look for the oscars. Never seen anything like that on tv, so I’m pretty shocked.

Sn0tnose · 28/03/2022 23:28

I don’t think either of them covered themselves in glory.

What I think is absolutely appalling is anyone blaming Jada for Will’s actions, which I’ve seen more than once today.

Molly333 · 28/03/2022 23:36

I watched this tonight and have not felt anxiety like this in years. I was with a group of people and really struggled not to cry . My upset waa a retriggering of an event where my ex husband shouted in my face . His agression was the same as Will Smith , who shouted with real anger that i suspect if confronted would have got much worse back and have been quite frightening to watch . Weirdly Will smith was laughing until he saw his wifes face ?? My thoughts on him have totally changed

carlapig · 28/03/2022 23:44

Can't believe that anyone on this Mumsnet thread is supporting Will Smith on this. Am thinking tonight of the poor mum murdered in East London opposite my friend's flat in Bethnal Green and her two children. Lets hope that a new generation of mums and dads start taking male violence more seriously and start raising their boys properly and that means zero tolerance when it comes to men reacting violently.

theton · 28/03/2022 23:50

He ruined his own big night..but what's with all the nastiness? Why is the host making those awful jokes? They showed clips of Rebel Wilson being horrible when she was hosting another awards ceremony to

It's the status quo, roast the celebs. I think it's supposed to make us plebs think they are just like us despite their new faces & ££££ lifestyles. ok

HRTQueen · 28/03/2022 23:53

I agree the shouting was really frightening more so than the slap but then I wasn’t on the receiving end. He is a big guy

But the shouting he was so angry and the way he just flipped. I have seen this when people are on coke and think this is likely. Plus the ridicule of their marriage and particularly the over sharing and knowing you have lost respect or worse people feel sorry for you when you wife has told the world about her young lover (even is they were on a break)

Surprised there isn’t a statement yet

theton · 29/03/2022 00:02

I dont get the support for WS. It's a slippery slope to say words deserve physical violence. Personally I think if someone hit me I'd have every right to retaliate though

theton · 29/03/2022 00:03

I think it was this but I think he's reaction makes you pity him more.

A man punching another man under provocation is hardly the same as murdering their wife and kids. My brothers used to fight each other endlessly when they were little and get in fights with other boys at school. Neither of them has ever laid a finger on me, my sisters or another girl. Many men that fight other men compartmentalise those behaviours. Doesn't make it right, but doesn't make it comparable to the murder of one's partner and child.
