I'm a bit on the fence at the moment but shocked from watching this - wondered what others think?

YABU Will Smith had every right to wallop Chris. His wife was clearly deeply insulted. He deserved it.
YANBU Chris was just reading from a script and didn't deserve such a public assault.

Jada repeatedly humiliates Will I do think he should have left her long ago, I wonder if he’s ok mentally maybe not, I watch her show, he wasn’t faithful either , but they clearly love each other and I think Will is really close to his family, he adores his children , and it’s probably why they’ve tried to workout their issues,
Maybe it hit a nerve or something, after spending years trying to their your marriage.

It’s a messy situation but still Chris was horrible for saying it, and I completely get Will’s reaction,

ancientgran · 28/03/2022 10:02

@RockinHorseShit

I don't condone violence, but I'm with Will on this one, though it would have even better still if it had been Wills wife who got up & whacked CR one
Yes I'd have liked to see her taking control. She looked fantastic and I know someone who lost all her hair and I know it can take a tremendous amount of courage to walk out proudly.
lonelyapple · 28/03/2022 10:03

Looks staged to me.

ancientgran · 28/03/2022 10:04

@Notbeinfunnehbut

They are all so wierd all 3 of them it’s a very toxic marriage, Jada repeatedly humiliates Will I do think he should have left her long ago, I wonder if he’s ok mentally maybe not,

Chris rock is I dunno, I loved EHC back in the day but he’s quite repellent on screen so yeah a low blow although…..and here’s my question, would he have done that to a white,middle aged ,male comedian?

And would CR have said it about a white middle aged woman?
ididntevennotice · 28/03/2022 10:04

@Winday

Well, no. But it's certainly a reason behind him making inappropriate jokes. The academy should've stopped it, because it was cruel if CR knew about Jada having alopecia. He needs to learn where the line is. Not an excuse, but a reason.

What is the reason? I was asking what the reason is? What is the diagnosis? Because 'like autism' isn't a medical diagnosis and it's certainly no way to excuse behaviour like this.

DarleneSnell · 28/03/2022 10:05

He's an actor, he knows how to go in there and look like he isn't bothered. It isn't necessarily true though.

Oh come on. He didn't mind looking "bothered" on stage during his weepy acceptance speech. If he had any class he'd have kept his head down after what he did but I'd wager this video is the real Will. Assaulted someone on stage and then parties the night away holding his prize. What a tosser.

So what if Wanda Sykes had said the same thing instead of Rock and Smith assaulted her? Would it be ‘fair enough’ then? I have no idea who Wanda Sykes is but if she wants to provoke people then yes she can't be surprised if they are provoked. He didn't punch him, didn't put him on the ground and give him a kicking, he gave him a slap and it didn't look like much of a slap, he didn't stagger and was smiling about it so I think we can say staged or not it wasn't a vicious assault.

ArtVandalay · 28/03/2022 10:07

I used to think Will Smith was great, now I think he’s an absolute twat. If I were his wife, I’d be bloody furious with him. It was up to her to take offence if she wanted to (and that would’ve been by speaking to Chris Rock), not her thug of a husband.

No excuse for violence whatsoever.

ancientgran · 28/03/2022 10:08

You don't know if that was an act. Hollywood isn't quite like down the local pub.
notinherethen · 28/03/2022 10:09

@oliviastwisted

Oh and I am seriously loving the irony of the message violence isn’t ok coming put of Hollywood today. I mean so so many movies glamourising male violence.
Good point.
SartresSoul · 28/03/2022 10:10

Not a fan of either of them, they’re both arseholes. Assault is never justified though so Will was ultimately out of order and should have been booted out imo. The joke was a low blow, Chris Rock should have been called out for it but physical assault is always a step too far.

SantaCarlaCalifornia · 28/03/2022 10:10

I'm shocked at the number of apologists for male violence here.

Contrary to popular belief, words (even really bad and rude ones) aren't literal violence.
It's a really slippery slope to say that it's OK to be violent because someone has offended you, and absolutely used by many men who beat their wives while feeling justified about it.

DarleneSnell · 28/03/2022 10:11

Clearly, since if you clocked someone at the local pub you'd probably be thrown out.

GivememyowlbackSandra · 28/03/2022 10:12

We have recently watched all of The Fresh Prince on Iplayer with the kids, my teenage DS loves Will. Watching this on the news this morning, my DS was visibly disappointed. What CR said was wrong, what Will did was wrong. All played out infront of impressionable kids.....

SirChenjins · 28/03/2022 10:13

Exactly @ArtVandalay.

I thought it was very interesting that WS’s initial reaction was to laugh at the ‘joke’ - and then jumped on stage to assault CR before launching his verbal tirade - not looking at his wife to see how she was and comforting her if needed.
DH’s first reaction to someone making fun of me wouldn’t have been to laugh along - he would have been too busy checking that I was ok. I imagine most rational, intelligent men would be the same. So many women on here defending Neanderthal behaviour.

Will shouldn't have hit Chris, but Chris shouldn't have made a joke about a traumatic condition especially about a person sat right there in the room.

So I'm kind of on the fence.

I don't agree with violence but I get why Will did it.

Chris should apologise publicly to Jada. Will should apologise publicly to Chris for hitting him.

ArtVandalay · 28/03/2022 10:17

Yes. I can fight my own battles than you. And it would be with a lot more class and dignity. If my husband felt he had the right to act on my behalf, I’d think we were in the dark ages. How dare he.

ExtraOnion · 28/03/2022 10:19

I think “punch down” comedy is abhorrent .. ditto violence

They are both prime examples of entitled toxic masculinity .. violence with words, violence with your hands - the outcome is the same

2DogsOnMySofa · 28/03/2022 10:21

The joke was vile and Rock should be hauled over the coals for it, scripted or not. But Will Smith just lost all the moral high ground by resorting to violence. They are both idiots, but violence is never acceptable.

RantyAunty · 28/03/2022 10:22

Was the joke written for CR? Surely they practice these things before getting on stage? You'd think someone would mention it if they thought the joke offensive.

WS was completely out of line to go up there and punch him and then swear like that.
He could have spoken to him afterwards.

FanFckingTastic · 28/03/2022 10:23

I can't help but feel that there's something very fake about this. Watching the clip, the slap is very awkward - given that Will Smith a big guy who's at had some rudimentary boxing training at the very least the action of it seems odd and a bit 'play-fighty' Likewise Chris Rock's reaction doesn't seem realistic, unless of course he knew it was coming.

Real or fake however, the whole thing is just awful. The bad-taste joke is awful, the violent macho reaction is awful, the tearful apologies are awful. The only person that I have any respect for in all of this is Jada - she must be furious with the whole thing and rightly so.

2021s · 28/03/2022 10:28

It’s not ok for a man to humiliate a woman in front of her husband, her peers and the world for her appearance - never mind her appearance due to a medical condition. Not surprised WS reacted like this.

Chishnfips · 28/03/2022 10:33

He's going to have to move in with his auntie and uncle in Bel Air.
