I'm a bit on the fence at the moment but shocked from watching this - wondered what others think?

YABU Will Smith had every right to wallop Chris. His wife was clearly deeply insulted. He deserved it.
YANBU Chris was just reading from a script and didn't deserve such a public assault.

I have no idea why jokes have to be made about people's appearance, and too often women's appearance is the butt of unnecessary jokes made by men. The joke was uncalled for. Will Smith would have done better using his acceptance speech to highlight this issue in a much more thought provoking way and then he'd have walkes away with the moral highground. Violence is not OK. All he did was highlight how many men are more likely to use their fists than their words.

eandz13 · 28/03/2022 09:36

I don't feel differently about either man because of this, I still love them both as actors and comedians.
But I am of the view that if you're prepared to make a joke at somebody's expense, humiliating them in front of crowds of people and cameras, then you should prepare yourself for the chance you may get a slap for it 🤷🏻‍♀️

I'm showing my ignorance here but I hadn't heard of Chris Rock until today. After watching the clip, of course it's not ok to hit someone, but it was a nasty remark and I don't think there was any power behind the punch, more a show of aggression. Chris Rock doesn't come across as a very likeable person - not sure how he got a presenting job.

oliviastwisted · 28/03/2022 09:37

Oh and I am seriously loving the irony of the message violence isn’t ok coming put of Hollywood today. I mean so so many movies glamourising male violence.

MangoLipstick · 28/03/2022 09:38

The joke was obviously in poor taste but Will Smith getting up on stage & slapping him was a bad move. His speech ‘love makes you do crazy things’ etc was cringe & not a good message.

GoFishandChips · 28/03/2022 09:39

I think Will has been publicly humilated and possibly felt emasculated with all the cheating revelations over the last few years, I think this was a display of toxic masculinity and frustration and possibly personal feelings about Chris. I can't believe the two of them would agree for it to be staged as it give so much fuel to racist fire.

Notbeinfunnehbut · 28/03/2022 09:39

They are all so wierd all 3 of them it’s a very toxic marriage, Jada repeatedly humiliates Will I do think he should have left her long ago, I wonder if he’s ok mentally maybe not,

Chris rock is I dunno, I loved EHC back in the day but he’s quite repellent on screen so yeah a low blow although…..and here’s my question, would he have done that to a white, middle aged ,male comedian?

Jellycatspyjamas · 28/03/2022 09:41

Yep, how many abusive men use “love” as the excuse for their violent behaviour.

DarleneSnell · 28/03/2022 09:41

@ToxicBuns

I think Will was perfectly justified slapping Chris Rock. He has always been a mouthy git and has a history of taking things too far. The look on poor Jadas' face, she was mortified and so, so upset. Will handled it just fine and the way they looked at each other afterwards was divine. Sometimes violence IS the answer. Well done Will.

Well don't worry as I'm sure CR was 10 times more upset at being smacked and humiliated in front of millions, and then have to continue hosting the show. Bizarre painting the Smiths as some kind of couple goals.

Brefugee · 28/03/2022 09:41

They are both utter shits. And women made so much history and it's all overshadowed by utter shits. fuckers

LondonWolf · 28/03/2022 09:43

Indeed and what would we be saying if a white man had got up and slapped Chris Rock for making a joke about his wife? Especially in the current climate. Lots of apologists for Will on this and the other thread.

Jellycatspyjamas · 28/03/2022 09:43

He wasn’t hosting, he was presenting an award - no need whatsoever for the mini stand up routine. Get up, give the award, sit down again - no need for the tasteless “joke”.

Noname1999 · 28/03/2022 09:47

I understand where he was coming from, but obviously but ok. Will Smith needs real therapy, not that Scientology bullshit.

GoFishandChips · 28/03/2022 09:48

Oh I didn't realise that either! I feel that changes things a lot, still doesn't mean violence is okay but it wasn't like CR was being employed to make jokes and paint him in an even poorer light!

Beefcurtains79 · 28/03/2022 09:48

AndAsIfByMagic

Will was under a lot of stress that night. And then someone abused his wife because of her disability.

I'm not surprised he cracked.

Jesus Christ. What stress was he under, the stress of the fact he might not win the Oscar? Can you actually hear yourself?
I’m gobsmacked at the people defending him.

DarleneSnell · 28/03/2022 09:49

He seems to have recovered fine.

It’s fucking illegal to assault people for a reason. I can’t believe these responses, no wonder violence is on the increase.

HoveringDonkeyofKnock · 28/03/2022 09:50

so because of their sharing details of a marriage its ok to "roast" someone's appearance?

It’s not ok but it’s not illegal. Hitting someone in the face for making a bad taste insulting (supposed) joke is.
Alopecia is devastating. It must have been very upsetting for Jada.

I think this as well, maybe I am over analysing, but it seems Will Smith seemed humiliated, but not just over the joke.
Frazzled2207 · 28/03/2022 09:51

CR is an idiot and WS has every right to be angry however walking over and slapping someone on stage is not a good look at all.

HeArInGhandsgirl11 · 28/03/2022 09:54

Omg I actually can't believe he did this.. why was he so offended by the comment .. I don't follow celebrity life's so have no idea if the history

ancientgran · 28/03/2022 09:55

Provocative "joke" provoked someone. Seems fair enough to me, if you want to dish it out be prepared for the reaction. I don't like violence but I also don't like seeing someone up on stage, feeling like he's very safe, humiliating a woman who is suffering from a condition that most of us would find incredibly difficult.

He's an actor, he knows how to go in there and look like he isn't bothered. It isn't necessarily true though.

So what if Wanda Sykes had said the same thing instead of Rock and Smith assaulted her? Would it be ‘fair enough’ then?
WrongWayApricot · 28/03/2022 09:58

He didn't have a right to hit him, but the joke was definitely out of order and it was right for Will to say what he did.
