People thinking he died in prison...

His leaving house arrest was a big news event.
Winning the Nobel Peace Prize
The first elections after apartheid
Becoming President.
Presenting the Rugby World Cup to the winning South African team in South Africa
His death in 2013

All massive news events.

I get some people thinking certain people had died before they had and misremembering other stuff and events...

But thinking Nelson Mandela had died in jail in the 80s....Seriously?

I remember writing letters to Amnesty International for Mandela’s release. Some implied reading my poor handwriting was a form of cruel and unusual punishment.

:-)

I too wrote to Amnesty and campaigned for Mandela's release. I clearly remember the day he came out. It's beyond me how anyone would think he died in prison. He had a distinguished career for many years afterwards. He hasn't been dead that many years and after it happened there was loads of stuff about him on the television for ages.

(Oh and I also remember Spangles, so does Jonathan Ross.)

What really annoys me about this is that if Mandela had died in prison, South Africa would have completely erupted. There would have been no possibility of a relatively peaceful transition from the apartheid era and the history of the country would have taken a different course. Mandela dying in prison was one of the fears of the old regime.
It annoys me that the Mandela effect discussion never asks people what they think happened next if he died in prison. This might reveal their level of ignorance which is at the root of the whole thing.

I thought the whole point is that people are aware of this stuff. The Mandela affect isn't a brand new phenomenon, it has been discussed for years. Prior to his release, career etc some people had thought he'd died but realised when he became headline news again that in fact was not the case.

Of course it's not a brand new effect. I posted this in reference to a thread where someone mentioned it in relation to something else.

And it doesn't seem to have happened on a mass scale with anything else.

It has though - maybe less spoken about as not so high profile and because they don't actually have the phenomenon named after them but there are plenty of examples. Things like the monopoly man having a monocle.

My point is no one is just finding out now that he didn't die in prison. They found out at a significant time when he was making headlines such as on his release. Or if they missed that as is possible of no access to the news for a variety of reasons, something else shortly after ...

If you read my posts, you will see that that point has been made by me. In fact - that's the whole thread. At what point did they realise he hadn't died in prison......

I'd guess the first news report after their belief that showed he hadn't. Not everyone has access to news all the time so varying times but all likely a long time ago being as the phenomenon, like I said, is not a new one.
