to not get the Mandela effect when it comes to Nelson Mandela

People thinking he died in prison...

His leaving house arrest was a big news event.
Winning the Nobel Peace Prize
The first elections after apartheid
Becoming President.
Presenting the Rugby World Cup to the winning South African team in South Africa
His death in 2013

All massive news events.

I get some people thinking certain people had died before they had and misremembering other stuff and events...

But thinking Nelson Mandela had died in jail in the 80s....Seriously?
Meeting the Queen
His death and funeral in

@LittleSnakes

What’s the mirror mirror on the wall one?
In the Disney film the evil queen says magic mirror on the wall
AnnieJ1985 · 27/03/2022 21:36

@EmeraldShamrock1

I've never met anyone who believed Nelson Mandela died in prison.
How do you know, though? Maybe lots of people think this, but it doesn't come up in conversation very often.
fourofwands · 27/03/2022 21:38

I experienced the Hillary / Hilary Clinton flip flop around 2016. Her name changed to Hilary, every source on the Internet spelled it with one L. About 2 weeks later it was back to double L. I showed my DH at the time. Periodically I google her to see if it ever changes again. I can't explain it but it really happened.

KindergartenKop · 27/03/2022 21:40

People are just not paying attention regarding Mandela. He was a major figure! How could you think he'd died before he did!?

cakeorwine · 27/03/2022 21:40

@PastMyBestBeforeDate

But you 'remember' it wrong because you saw it in a film Confused
You can put the face there for all you like. It was Long walk to Freedom The last few years he was in a warden's house. With people visiting him.

Then there was the scene - which obviously I saw in real life as it was world news - of him walking down the road to freedom.

So forgive me if it seemed like house arrest for the last few years

Petesbowtie9 · 27/03/2022 21:43

She certainly did

StartupRepair · 27/03/2022 21:49

I think the Mandela effect is people who don't follow world news vaguely remembering a lot of 'fuss' about Mandela when he was freed and filing it in their minds as him having died. It's just a result of ignorance.

tabulahrasa · 27/03/2022 21:55

Um... isn’t the Mandela effect concerning Mandela not that they don’t remember him being released or anything after, but that when he was released they went, hang on, I’m blooming sure he died in prison a few years ago...

cakeorwine · 27/03/2022 22:00

Well - she coined it in 2010 which was some time after his release in 1990

@RobinHumphries oh right! I always thought it was mirror mirror on the wall too. Can’t remember if that’s from the film or a book tho.

I’d just assumed it only became a named thing much later.

But I thought it was people seeing stuff about him and thinking that’s weird, I remember him dying in prison rather than remembering nothing after he was released.

A bit like me being very sure Ronnie Corbett was dead years before it happened - only I’m pretty sure I just mixed him up with Ronnie barker instead of deciding it’s an altered timeline, lol

DazzlingDarrenDring · 27/03/2022 22:06

I don't get it either to be honest.

50 people thinking Nelson Mandela died in prison are just 50 very ignorant people.

There's no excuse for not knowing the story of a such an important historical figure.

DorothyZbornakIsAQueen · 27/03/2022 22:08

I don't get it at all OP. It was all over the place when the Spice Girls met him.

Clawdy · 27/03/2022 22:15

People's memories can be strange, my sister was insistent that at the end of "Rosemary's Baby" you see a grotesque creature in the cradle. Of course, we never see what's inside the cradle.

MichaelAndEagle · 27/03/2022 22:16

Is this like the one about people being certain walkers changed the colour of salt and vinegar and cheese and onion crisps over - so they used to be blue for salt and vinegar. I was certain this happened, but apparently never did!! Was always the way it is now.

Ohyesiam · 27/03/2022 22:16

I read an article about the Mandela effect and I didn’t” mistakenly believe “ and of the topic that were put grated as examples . I generally have a really poor memory so I would have thought I was prime for it.
Is it just one of those journalist generated things?

FrecklesMalone · 27/03/2022 22:23

I'm so sure we do. It actually frightens me to think about it! Did we see a devil like thing at all?
AlwaysAWoman · 27/03/2022 22:33

Yes to Britney wearing a headset in that video! Honestly I can see it clear as day in my memory. So weird

AlwaysAWoman · 27/03/2022 22:34

Isn't it a hand we see in the cot for Rosemary's baby? Or I could be getting confused with the book

knittingaddict · 27/03/2022 22:37

I understand the Mandela effect, but I personally never thought he died in prison and haven't personally heard anyone say that he did.

No it didn’t.

Agree with this. Surely freeing Nelson Mandela was a thing for decades. Can't do that if he's dead.
knittingaddict · 27/03/2022 22:42

@KeyErro

Agree, it pisses me off. It's just somebody ill-informed who remembers something wrong.
Yes, this!
SaySomethingMan · 27/03/2022 22:46

I’m with you 100%. Sometimes, I’ve a feeling it’s to make a point that he’s not as big a deal as those who rate him think he was.
I don’t get it either.

They DEFINITELY did this!!
