to not get the Mandela effect when it comes to Nelson Mandela

cakeorwine · 27/03/2022 20:49

People thinking he died in prison...

His leaving house arrest was a big news event.
Winning the Nobel Peace Prize
The first elections after apartheid
Becoming President.
Presenting the Rugby World Cup to the winning South African team in South Africa
His death in 2013

All massive news events.

I get some people thinking certain people had died before they had and misremembering other stuff and events...

But thinking Nelson Mandela had died in jail in the 80s....Seriously?
Meeting the Queen
His death and funeral in

Video footage and archive "news" can easily be faked. The technology already exists and is getting cheaper all the time. I would expect some people who believe Mandela died in the 80s have seen the "video" of him being released a few years later but either think it's either been digitally manipulated or a lookalike was used.

How effective this is can be shown by another example where faking has definitely convinced a large number of people, the Starburst sweet example. Many people are certain it used to be called Opal Fruits - there are mocked up pictures of alleged "Opal Fruits" labels, the Wikipedia page is full of "Opal Fruits" references, even though it's never actual been the name.

Nice try! There was a range of sweets called Opal fruits in the UK. Star burst was a slightly different sweet made in the US and sold across Europe. The US company bought the UK manufacturer and standardise the sweets (effectively rebranded opal fruits to starburst changed the recipe to the starburst at the same time). 2 years ago they did a limited edition in the original name. But was still star burst recipes / flavours.

@WomanStanleyWoman

They don't need to explain it. When Mandela was released they thought, "Oh he's not dead, I thought he was, I'm sure it was on the news 20 years ago" and then carried on with their lives. Maybe people who cannot grasp this idea that they stopped believing he was dead when they found out he wasn't should be described as thick?

But the whole theory behind the Mandela Effect is that people don’t just ‘get on with their lives’. They obsess over the idea that they remember it happening and won’t be convinced otherwise. ‘But I remember!! It haaaaappened!!!!!’ If they just realised they had just heard wrongly and that was that, there wouldn’t be a whole phenomenon named after it, would there?

Several times I’ve seen an older celebrity has died and thought ‘Oh, I was sure s/he was dead already’. But they obviously weren’t, and I move on. I haven’t convinced myself that there was a huge conspiracy to cover up Patrick McNee or Eddie Large having died years before it was announced.

I was responding to someone who thought people believed a dead man was president, which no one has ever claimed.

And yes most people did get on with their lives, I've yet to come across someone who is convinced they were right after he was released.

Many people are certain it used to be called Opal Fruits - there are mocked up pictures of alleged "Opal Fruits" labels, the Wikipedia page is full of "Opal Fruits" references, even though it's never actual been the name.

Er yes it was the name and they have made a few limited edition come backs.

MargosKaftan · 28/03/2022 11:27

Oh wait, my Vera Lynn thing of thinking she was already dead when she died at aged 103 and possibly was i saw the news footage about her 100th birthday and just thought the "look back at a celebs life" news report was about her death - Nelson Mandela turned 60 in 1988 in prison. Most people who were surprised to hear he was still alive being released seem to remember news reports of his death in the late 80s, could it be the news did reports on his 60th birthday that would look like a death announcement report?! Would be even easier back then to not quite take in the correct story as most people would just watch one news bulletin a day.

Did UK /US main news reports cover his 60th birthday?! Or even earlier in 82 when he had served 20 years in prison or 87 when it was 25 years. Could those news reports - not regularly repeated as they are now, be mistaken for a death report by a significant number of people?

WomanStanleyWoman · 28/03/2022 11:45

He was 70 in 1988, not 60 - but that was the year of the Mandela Concert. Maybe people thought it was a tribute concert rather than part of the campaign for his release.

evilharpy · 28/03/2022 11:57

@Tobacco

You do see the devil's face in Rosemary's baby, but you see it a minute or 2 after she looks in the cot, not at the same time she looks in the cot. Mirror mirror isn't Mandela effect. It's what anyone would think who had read the book not seen the film. I haven't seen the film so never heard "magic mirror"
I've seen Rosemary's Baby far too many times, I'm a bit obsessed with it, but I'm second guessing myself now. As far as I remember you see the devil's face during the rape/ritual scene but not when the baby is involved or at any other time. She says "what have you done to his eyes?" but you don't see them.

Britney did have a headset.

There is just no evidence of it within this reality. We shifted realities. In this reality she never had the headset.

@dollybird

I remember it going all round college that Freddie Mercury had died, then about a week later he actually did die, and everyone was like 'huh, but he died last week?'.
The news that he had AIDS broke about a week before his death, and was confirmed a few days before he died. In those days AIDS was a death sentence.

They were Opal Fruits first in many countries - Ireland for instance - just as the Marathon pre-dated Snickers.
Calandor · 28/03/2022 12:48

It's the point that common consciousness makes people believe something that's not true.

Plus I'm 26 - I wasn't alive for most of those things. I was barely an adult when he died. So why would I remember that?

JaneJeffer · 28/03/2022 13:38

So we're hallucinating "made to make your mouth water"? Amazing Grin

Yep, taken a decade off him with my bad typing! But yes, that might make it easy to think he's died.
FriNightBlues · 28/03/2022 14:31

Surely everyone remembers the episode of Only Fools and Horses where he turned up to open Nelson Mandela House?

Clawdy · 28/03/2022 15:45

Pretty sure we never see a glimpse of that baby in the cot, the scene ends with her smiling lovingly at the little unseen creature, which is far more effective.

Morfil · 28/03/2022 17:31

I really want to know if the Opal Fruits post is sincere or not!

Topseyt · 28/03/2022 18:22

@sashh I was being tongue in cheek/sarcastic and don't need it explained to me. Of course I don't think that a dead man can become president. I was just remarking on the fact that there are still people around who think Mandela died in prison. Yes, I have known a couple.

dollybird · 28/03/2022 18:43

Opal fruits were 100% real!

What are you talking about? Grin

Starburst themselves say they were called Opal Fruits!

Yes obviously, so I just want to know if the PP was misguided or was making quite a good joke.

‘Opal fruits! Made to make your mouth water!’ Just bought a packet a few days ago…

Is this like the one about people being certain walkers changed the colour of salt and vinegar and cheese and onion crisps over - so they used to be blue for salt and vinegar. I was certain this happened, but apparently never did!! Was always the way it is now.
Golden Wonder were the other way around, so their salt and vinegar was blue while Walkers was Green. I think...
dollybird · 28/03/2022 19:40

Square crisps (which are Walkers) are blue for salt and vinegar and green for cheese and onion. We have some in the cupboard.

@Couchbettato

My recent Mandela effect story is that I found out that Dunelm mill hasn't been called Dunelm mill since 2013, but every one I know still thinks our local one says Dunelm mill. Drove past the other day and there's a really weathered, old sign that just says Dunelm!

I've been questioning reality ever since.

That's not the same thing though, it's just using the name for something that you are most familiar with and there's no reason for anyone to actively look to see what the name on the sign is because they haven't heard it had changed. I might not have explained that very well, sorry Smile
mildlydispeptic · 28/03/2022 19:56

Are you possibly confusing Nelson Mandela with Steve Biko, OP? Because he most certainly did die in prison.

Morfil · 28/03/2022 20:15

@mildlydispeptic

The OP isn’t confusing him with anyone.

cakeorwine · 28/03/2022 21:05

If someone thought at the time he was released from prison that "that's strange, I could have sworn I thought he had died in prison", that's something that people may have misremembered. You can sort of see it if they remembered the wrong person dying.

If at the time he died, they thought he had already died, then that's strange - as there were plenty of World events that have been in the news about him - including him meeting the Spice Girls.

The Mandela effect seems to have been discussed in 2010 - and the internet was definitely around before that - maybe it was a discussion on obscure regions of it until it became mainstream. A little alt group discussion somewhere.

I suppose it's knowing at what point people thought to themselves "that's strange, I distinctly remember him dying in prison". What news did they hear to make them question themselves?

If someone in 2000 was asked "Did Nelson Mandela die in prison in the 80s" I would hope they knew that he was very much alive during the 90s given all he achieved.

If someone 1990 just before Mandela was released "Is Nelson Mandela alive or dead" and they said " I think he died in prison", then maybe they might have thought he had died. Even though there had been a big concert in London for him in 1988.

Oh - and Opal Fruits are made to make your mouth water.
