I’m a child of the 80’s, teen of the 90’s. I was 18 when this song by The Beautiful south came out. Saw the video of it today and it reminded me.
I was skinny, pretty wild, fairly gorgeous… looking back…I remember thinking ‘Poor guy, what a boring life…’
I’m 44 now and I’d likely be seen as that boring wife and my Dh as the guy with all the weekend jobs and child centred things to do…made me think a bit about how if he ever secretly feels like escaping to San Francisco Bay with a younger woman for a more exciting life 🤣
What a horrible song and why aren’t there any about women being in this position and craving some excitement 🤷🏻‍♀️

Because women don't have exciting inner lives with our own desires. We're just service humans.

Lockheart · 26/03/2022 21:07

Those are not the lyrics Grin

HamsterTrumpet · 26/03/2022 21:09

Oh, I love that song! Although prefer the unedited lyrics.

I don’t think it’s a horrible song. I always thought it was just about a woman desperately trying to get with someone she fancied but he wasn’t having any of it. So chosen stability rather than excitement, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

This is kind of about women being in the same position and craving some excitement, just to add balance:

Timeinabottle · 26/03/2022 21:10

@Lockheart 😅I realise it has ‘Fuck me’ in many of the verses, but one of ‘Have me’ and is obviously the more friendly radio/YouTube version

BessieFinknottle · 26/03/2022 21:10

That's exactly what I was thinking Lockheart Grin

Timeinabottle · 26/03/2022 21:10

@PearPickingPorky Ha, Yep…

Timeinabottle · 26/03/2022 21:12

@HamsterTrumpet I just think it’s a bit shit for the poor wife at home, making his breakfast etc, perhaps I’m projecting 🤣

Love it, just been watching the Housemartins on I love 1986

Timeinabottle · 26/03/2022 21:14

@HamsterTrumpet I’m not keen on the song itself, regardless of lyrics, ‘Song for whoever’ I love though-what a voice

sweeneytoddsrazor · 26/03/2022 21:15

I view it as a song from a woman who has failed to get her man , rather than a man wanting excitement. They also did A Little Time, which is a woman kicking out her straying man.

This 😂😂
Orchidsonthetable · 26/03/2022 21:16

This is on my gym playlist. There is nothing about age in there. You do understand women can be attractive at any age right?

Timeinabottle · 26/03/2022 21:16

But do they go off together at the end?

Johnnypiratesfriend · 26/03/2022 21:18

I listened to 'don't marry her' at Christmas and thought the same op.
I can remember looking at my hubby and thinking oh s I'm the wife in the song not the woman offering the f. I started to think maybe I should clean the bathroom and kitchen less haha!!

Timeinabottle · 26/03/2022 21:19

@Orchidsonthetable Yes, of course 🤷🏻‍♀️ In my mind it’s a younger woman, due to the possible lack of commitments that the married with kids guy has. Just a vision in my head, not one necessarily equating only youth with good looks.

OP posts:
Whataboutno · 26/03/2022 21:20

I hated that song, and anything by that band! Grin

Timeinabottle · 26/03/2022 21:21

@Johnnypiratesfriend Yes! That’s exactly it 😂 well described, I’ve definitely moved over to the side of the woman at home as opposed to the one offering it to him

Babdoc · 26/03/2022 21:22

Very clever lyrics though, portraying a miserable marriage:
Your work shoes are glistening -
But she’s a PhD in “I told you so”,
you’ve a knighthood in “I’m not listening”
The kitchen’s always tidy,
the bathroom’s always clean
She’s a diploma in just hiding things
You’ve a a first in low esteem.

Sure, but absolutely nothing in the song suggests this.

It does mention age! In the first verse she sings ”I’d never grow so old and flabby, that could never be”. I would say it’s clearly about a younger woman wanting to entice a man from his older, boring (as in, cleans the bathroom) wife.
theotherfossilsister · 26/03/2022 21:29

The one that gets me (got me) was don't you wish your girlfriend was hot like me.

Timeinabottle · 26/03/2022 21:34

@mynameisnotkate That’s the impression I got too.

@Babdoc Yes, clever lyrics

Timeinabottle · 26/03/2022 21:36

@theotherfossilsister Yes, that’s another one..I was around 27/28 at the time and loved it, regularly driving around, singing along to it, now I’m like offended by it 😅

OnceMoreWithoutFeeling · 26/03/2022 21:38

Where Have All The Cowboys Gone came out around the same thing and is basically the same idea from the woman's perspective...
