To think my husband is gravely ill at the wrong time?

Masses of confusion.

Husband spoke to GP yesterday morning and described his chest pain. He was advised to call an ambulance. My husband refused because he didn't think he needed one - thought he had chest infection or torn muscle.

He went to A&E - was sat in a corridor from 10.30am - he had ecg, x ray and blood test. He continued to sit on a chair in the corridor all day.

He was told he was waiting for blood test results. These came back at 6pm. Then he had to wait for a CT scan - then rushed to resus.

Dissected aorta from heart level to naval level.

I was called to be allowed to sit with him because I wasn't allowed to be in A&E. Was then told he was being blue lighted to another hospital an hour away for immediate surgery. I asked is this time critical? The answer was - yes life saving.

Paramedics arrived and told me to set off to this other hospital. There were three paramedics. One said 'I'm not taking him because I can't use that bit of kit, I'll lose my job if something goes wrong'. No advanced paramedics available and no doctor available to go in the transfer.

I was 15 min into the journey and then called back to the hospital.

No surgery.

Trying all day today to get him transferred. Nothing available.

He's critically ill.

I'm out of my mind with worry.

There's a saying about not being ill on the weekend. The standard of care is not the same. The 24hr cover appears to not exist.

I feel like we're being fobbed off with poor excuses big style.

I hope you’ve had good news and are sitting with your DH, OP Flowers

Reallybadidea · 25/04/2022 17:05

I've been thinking of you today OP, it must be so hard waiting. If it is indeed elephant trunk procedure that's been done today, then it doesn't surprise me at all if you are still waiting for news. They really are all day cases (I'm part of the team that carries them out). Hope you get that phone call soon x

Onionbhajisandwich · 25/04/2022 17:41

thinking of you today x

MyOtherCarIsAPorsche · 25/04/2022 17:45

I wasn't going to ring until 7pm but I suddenly felt 'wrong' so I rang 5 min ago. He's still in surgery - no other information, so I hope that's good news.

It must be so hard for you. I'm thinking of you

Mydoghealsmyheart · 25/04/2022 18:24

You and your family are in my thoughts today.

LetitiaLeghorn · 25/04/2022 18:27

My mum had a straightforward bypass, everything went smoothly, and she went down at 7am and wasn't out til 2pm. Your husband's op is much more complicated so will need much more time. But the waiting is hard. Every hour feels like a day. Hope you get good news soon.

Crispycremedelight · 25/04/2022 18:27

hang in there and massive 🤗 it’ll be a few more hours and you get the news that will help you get a good sleep tonight

Xmasfairy86 · 25/04/2022 18:33

Hoping for positive news soon.
the positive I’m taking so far is that the surgery is happening finally.

Staryflight445 · 25/04/2022 19:36

Thinking of you. You seem like a gorgeous wife, mum & grandparent- please remember to take care of you as well 💐

1frenchfoodie · 25/04/2022 21:23

I hope the surgery went well. My DHs brother had a triple heart bypass just a fortnight ago, after aging before everyones eyes in the preceeding months, and was down the pub tonight with his daughters. Crossing my fingers your DH’s surgery is as successful.

Lovely cardigan too. I’ from a family of knitters (dont have the patience myself) and cherish the handmade kids clothes they have made. I also have a granny (now in her 90s) with a button box I still like to dip in to now for the memories.

MyOtherCarIsAPorsche · 25/04/2022 21:31

He's in CICU. I don't know any details of the procedure other than the surgery went as planned.

I was told to ring back at 9pm, which I did, and was told that the nurse was busy as he has just regained consciousness. I will ring back at 10pm.

I know it's very early days - but couldn't help a small celebratory slice of chocolate cheesecake. Also, I intend to go to bed at a reasonable hour so that I can ring up early in the morning to see how he is.

I can't visit until 48 hrs after his admittance to CICU - so it's looking like Wednesday evening before I can be there.

I'm forever grateful to the whole team - truly very skilled brilliant superstars. What a special gift to have - and to share.

Many, grateful thanks to each and everyone. This site is just bloody fabulous when you're desperate and reaching out. Lots of support here - and expertise. Humankind at its very best. I've been encouraged and emboldened all the way. What a rollercoaster.

Give your loved ones an extra squeeze and make sure they know how much they mean to you. We merrily go about our lives until the rollercoaster takes an almighty dive and you can't catch your breath. Hopefully, we're at the beginning of the climb.

legosnowqueen · 25/04/2022 21:37

@MyOtherCarIsAPorsche such a lovely update, thank you, been thinking about you Flowers

Innocenta · 25/04/2022 21:41

Great to know he's in CICU. Lots of love and strength to you both!

redastherose · 25/04/2022 21:44

Brilliant update OP. Hope you have a good nights sleep, you'll need it after all this worry.

LetitiaLeghorn · 25/04/2022 21:50

Big congratulations to Mr Porsche. And a hug for you.
CICU is the most amazing place. They get the best possible care with specialists on duty for even minor things. And someone is watching him personally all night so they'll be onto any problem right away. Get a good night's sleep in the knowledge that he is in the best hands there are. Also they told me to ring at any time and they were happy to take calls in the night. So if you wake up worried, don't wait the morning when it gets busy, just give them a buzz and put your mind at rest.
