Cards for dad's on mother's day?!

What is this fuckery
What is the point?
If a child only has a father then surely they can wait until Mothers day and vice versa?

Cards for dad's on mother's day?!
OP posts:
HumunaHey · 24/03/2022 16:53

@CounsellorTroi I think PPs point is that only women can be mothers, relating to their disdain at the card. Not that only a mother is a woman.

HumunaHey · 24/03/2022 16:55

@ArcheryAnnie

There's a world of difference between a kid making their parent a card on a day that isn't designed for them, and a corporation designing a card just to underline that there isn't a single moment in the year when we are allowed to focus on women.
I don't think corporations give a shit about Mother's Day focussing on women. They want to turn a profit and, if they see a market for Mother's Day cards for Father's, they're going to sell the product.

Surely you understand that.

If a child only has a father then surely they can wait until Mothers day and vice versa? If everyone else in the class is making a card then, no, they can't wait. Personally I wouldn't put 'Mothers' Day' on the front of the card though.
Sorry, I realise it is a commercial card. I thought it was made at school.
SFHJ · 24/03/2022 17:33

I always made my dad a Mother’s Day card as a kid as my mum was dead and I only had one parent!

Commercial cards for women on Fathers Day have been on store shelves for 20 years here in the USA. It was only a matter of time before they would cash in on the other direction.
balalake · 24/03/2022 17:42

Just no. Always remember Father's Day though.

MrsMiddleMother · 24/03/2022 17:57

Wow this is a snowflake post for sure. There's many reasons a child might want to get their dad a mothers day card.

SeedsSeedsSeeds · 24/03/2022 19:09

For years there have been "to grandma" or "from the dog" cards. This is just an extension of that so retailers can make more money. I personally think if your grandma is your mum something illegal has happened, but someone's must be buying them!

Perhaps a grandmother has raised - or helped raise - a child and they want to recognise that.

Some people on MN really lack imagination. There are differing family set ups and other family members who help raise children.

babywalker56 · 24/03/2022 21:17

The fact that the OP and other people are actually getting worked up over this is quite pathetic.

Not everyone has both a mum and dad in their lives. Some dads are 'mum and dad' and some mums are 'mum and dad' too. If someone wants to get a card for their dad to acknowledge them on both mother's AND father's day then what's the problem?

The same thing happens on Father's day. People will often wish their mum a 'happy Father's day' as they technically don't have a dad. When I was getting a gift for my DP for his first Father's day last year, there was a whole section devoted to mum's who were to be gifted for Father's day. Really not that deep

MorganKitten · 24/03/2022 21:20

@Supersee

Will there be any 'wishing a brilliant mum on Father's Day!' cards. Highly doubt it the way the world is going.
I’ve seen those for over 10years…
HELLITHURT · 24/03/2022 21:22

@Darbs76

They have the same on Father’s Day for mums
This!

There absolutely are cards for mums on Father's Day. My friend gets one for her mum as her dad was useless and she feels her mum did both roles

@SeedsSeedsSeeds I really think you need to step outside and get a grip. MILLIONS of people are raised by their grandparents for many different reasons.... why does something illegal need to have happened?!
LabelMaker · 24/03/2022 21:23

I'm shocked at the lack of imagination.

Some familys do not have a mum. Dad might take on the "mum" role. This might be hard for the kids at mothers day. They might want to acknowledge their dad does the "mumming". This isn't soley about the dad, the kids in these scenarios may be hurting too.

ThisIsNotThePostYourLookingFor · 24/03/2022 21:25

Nothing wrong with it. There’s cards for mothers on Father’s Day too. Not everyone has a mother

What? It doesn't have to be something illegal! What a weird thing to say.
ididntevennotice · 24/03/2022 21:34

@MurmuratingStarling

Batshit. I also saw some cards saying 'to my auntie on mother's day' today AND 'to my COUSIN on mother's day,' along with my grand/nan, and 'happy mother's day to my WIFE.' What fuckery is this? Mothers day cards for your AUNTIE and COUSIN now!

Would the auntie and cousin not get a card off their OWN DC??? And if they have no children, then they shouldn't be getting a mother's day card anyway!

Call me picky, but surely you should only be buying a mother's day card for your own mother!

My Nanna raised me and she deserves a Mother's Day card a million times over. The abandonment by my actual 'mother' my fucking heart and left me with PTSD. I feel sad for you, your lack of critical thinking is strong.

Bananarice · 24/03/2022 21:37

Ds1 made one for his cousin instead of me. They don't go to the same school, however he had recently given his old watch to ds1.

Haha sorry that made me smile.
DaffodilDandilion · 24/03/2022 21:44

I’ve bought my mum cards for Father’s Day before. She did both jobs so deserved twice the thanks in my opinion!

HopefulProcrastinator · 24/03/2022 21:48

My cousin is a single mum and always has a "Happy Father's day to the best mum" card off her son who she's raised without any support from his father.

I really can't get wound up about the opposite scenario and a decent single dad doing the same being recognised on mother's day.

TinaTurtle · 24/03/2022 21:54

Don't buy it, if you don't see the relevance to your circumstances. Live and let live.

GeorgiaMcGraw · 24/03/2022 21:57

I get making a card at school for someone who isn't mum/dad, but retailers selling them seems odd to me. I was estranged from my father for some time while growing up, I still just got my mum a mother's day card/gift. To each their own, I guess, but I find it odd.

Moonface123 · 24/03/2022 22:07

You will find lots of teens send their lone parent Mums " Happy Fathers Day, Mum" cards, or similar messages on social media. I think its good that they acknowledge one lone parent does the work of two.
