If 'commoners' can marry into the royal family - why have a 'royal' family -

I totally respect the Queen and think she's been largely a force for good...
But at work we were talking about the tour that's on now.. my boss pointed out the the definition of a royal family was that its lineage is 'predetermined by God'.
Well that is archaic in itself - my boss (who is no royalist) the. pointed out that once members of a royal family marry commoners they lose this 'untouchable special-Ness'.
I think he had a good point...
He's from Jamaica so hence we were all having the conversation .

Having a royal family is inherently ridiculous and we should all grow up and get rid of it.

Blimecory · 21/03/2022 12:07

Where did he get that definition of “predetermined by God” from?

UsernameInTheTown · 21/03/2022 12:09

I don't think we'll have one for much longer, given the inequality and hardship which are imminent for many people. I think they've had their day.

Brefugee · 21/03/2022 12:11

The queen believes that guff which is why she won't abdicate. Divine right of kings - they are chosen by god to be born from the right golden womb.

It is unbelievable in this day and age that this twaddle is still pandered to.

bingoitsadingo · 21/03/2022 12:12

Because otherwise they’d all be inbred.

I don’t think the ‘predetermined by god’ definition is necessarily accurate though. For starters I’m not against the royal family and I’m an atheist.

But if you buy ‘predetermined by god’ then the offspring of a royal and a “commoner” can be considered ‘predetermined’ anyway… it’s all just a bunch of arbitrary rules!

Thewindwhispers · 21/03/2022 12:12

If people believe in God, don’t they also believe thst the lineage of every family is predetermined by God?

ditalini · 21/03/2022 12:13

It bears no scrutiny whatsoever.

The "ordained by God" is clearly bollocks - more like ordained by someone back in the mists of time having a bigger army than someone else. Now they are ordained by our willingness to keep having a royal family - lose that and no more ordaining for anyone.

There's no such thing as "royal" or "commoner" in any meaningful sense of the term and it's perfectly healthy that we seem to have stopped trying to breed people like pedigree animals.

Aposterhasnoname · 21/03/2022 12:19

Well the Queen herself was technically a commoner when she married, but Prince Philip, having been created a duke the day before the wedding, was a peer, therefore not a commoner, so it’s a bit more complicated than people think.

MikeandDave · 21/03/2022 12:21

Surely once you marry into the family you then become royal so the family is still just as Royal

myislandhome · 21/03/2022 12:21

There is nothing royal about them. They are just basically descendants of some family who said "I am the boss of this area", way back when.

Gonnagetgoing · 21/03/2022 12:25

Agreed! I was on a bus (stayed with boyfriend and didn't drive there) the other morning and had someone who looked as if they could be Mediterranean or maybe Israeli - was in Brent Cross area - speak to me about the Royal Family saying how great the Queen was.

I looked at him and said 'she's been born into privilege' - which she has been.

I think our Royal Family are very outdated and they should step back and be able to go out more, like in The Netherlands, Belgium etc.

Georgeskitchen · 21/03/2022 12:27

Whoever they marry is usually (but not always) from an aristocratic family, they need new blood in the line to keep it strong and healthy otherwise they would all be chinless wonders 😀

Justcallmebebes · 21/03/2022 12:31

Prince Philip wasn't exactly a commoner though, he was a direct descendant of Queen Victoria

PinkFluffyUnicornSlippers · 21/03/2022 12:31

This

The main thing for me is that we need to get rid of the scroungers. They’ve had their day and it’s time we all had to stop bowing and scraping to them like they’re something special.

They’re Not.

IKnowYouDontTurnTheLightOn · 21/03/2022 12:35

They’re all commoners. They’re no better than any of us. The sooner we get our heads round that the sooner we’ll be rid of them.

And has the queen been a force for good? How? Any examples? I can think of literally nothing she’s achieved in 70 years. Nothing. Living a long time when you live in such ridiculous privilege is not an achievement.

FuckeryOmbudsman · 21/03/2022 12:37

@Blimecory

Where did he get that definition of “predetermined by God” from?
His/her imagination, plus a misunderstanding of the divine right of kings.

plus an inability to grasp that monarchs exist in non-Christian countries

IKnowYouDontTurnTheLightOn · 21/03/2022 12:37

@Georgeskitchen they ARE all chinless wonders! Grin

IKnowYouDontTurnTheLightOn · 21/03/2022 12:38

@FuckeryOmbudsman but the queen herself believes she has a divine right to rule. He hasn’t misunderstood that.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 21/03/2022 12:43

If they didn't introduce some hybrid vigour from time to time, they'd all be suffering the consanguinity issues - and morganatic marriage was a way of doing that long before proper genetic testing was a thing.

ledbydonkeys · 21/03/2022 12:46

@Blimecory “ Where did he get that definition of “predetermined by God” from?”

From the royal family’s emblem: “ Dieu et mon droit” (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dieu_et_mon_droit)

Divine right of kings and all that.

As to why we allow it? Because the English love a good class system - if someone’s above us, hopefully, they’re better than someone else Grin

TheKeatingFive · 21/03/2022 12:47

The whole thing is a crock of shit.

I see why it was a useful way of ensuring continuity in the middle ages, but its a ridiculous concept for the modern world.

Zilla1 · 21/03/2022 13:01

I think the approach of the Chrysanthemum Throne is consistent. A Princess who marries a commoner descends from heaven. I don't know how big the pool of suitable marriage partners is, though.

I don’t think that means “predetermined by God”, though. It means they get their authority from God, which is completely different.

Nicholethejewellery · 21/03/2022 13:21

Yes "divine right of kings" means that the ruler has power appointed by God (as opposed to people), it's nothing to do with lineage. A "commoner" who married into the royal family wouldn't suddenly move up the list of who is heir to the throne, they would never become ruler themselves. Any offspring they had would still have lineage dating back to Cerdic (King of Wessex 519-534) through their royal parent.
