Ridiculously high heels - Apprentice Final Four

axolotlfloof · 18/03/2022 22:28

Just watching this week's episode.
Really pleased to see 4 women in the final, but why the heels?
Even Karen is wearing them.
They are bad for your feet, balance and just ridiculous.
My Mum's feet were destroyed by heels in the 60s, and I prioritise walking over heels.

Maybe they like them? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Thinking2041 · 18/03/2022 22:32

I said the same to my husband.. about how uninspiring it was to see the woman in these high heels and standard tight dresses. But I realised the mens suits are even more confirmist and dull. But at least, they’re not bad for you.. like heels can be.

Jaffapaffa · 18/03/2022 22:34

I've been told today that I have to teach my class (Y8) that heels are part of a work wardrobe for women, and that if you want to succeed, it's essential to wear them.

I've objected several times, but have been told that it's not optional.

I'm really not comfortable with this at all.

But yes, apparently there's still a school of thought that says women must wear heels to be successful - hence their appearance in The Apprentice, I suppose.

notagain29 · 18/03/2022 22:35

YANBU and are these really the best 4 business ideas around?

bonfireheart · 18/03/2022 22:35

@jaffapaffa what awful school do you work at?

Beachbreak2411 · 18/03/2022 22:44

Their heels were ridiculous! Almost as ridiculous as their business plans!!

Jaffapaffa · 18/03/2022 22:44

A state secondary.

bonfireheart · 18/03/2022 22:46

Do the teachers at the school all have to wear high heels?

Lockeddownagain · 18/03/2022 22:46

I get a shock when I see people wearing heels why would you do that to yourself. I watched the fi Al four programme and they was a caveat at the end saying the four women are firm friends and then 10mi uses about why they liked 3ach other there is no way they'd have done that with they were men. And the dresses and skinny women with so much make up and high heels was quite depressing really

bruce43mydog · 18/03/2022 22:46

karen makes me nervous. i like the clicking of the heels to be fair op. lord sugar spins my head.

That's really not true. I'm senior in my role (IT) and exclusively wear hoodie and trainers.
Veryverysadandold · 18/03/2022 22:49

YANBU and why do they all have identical style? Like one could wear classy shirt and trousers with brogues etc. I think it's a terrible example to set young girls but then I think heels should be outlawed as tools of the patriarchy. See also massive fake lashes, loads of makeup and fake teeth. Bah humbug.

Tell your year 8s that at least one woman posting on mumsnet has a perfectly successful career, earns a six figure salary and has never worn heels to work. 🙄
bruce43mydog · 18/03/2022 22:49

i vote heels although i wouldnt wear them myself. my feet are to big for heels.

BigButtons · 18/03/2022 22:51

The heels, the dresses and the troweled on make up- so sad

SecretSpAD · 18/03/2022 22:55

Y feet hurt just looking at them. However....my objections to the programme is ,ore around the absolute vacuousness of the candidates combined with their obvious selection for being young/good looking/skinny/controversial/token older person etc.

Still, it's good entertainment

LiberteEgaliteBeyonce · 18/03/2022 22:57

I made exactly the same comment. It is quite clear that one of the candidates is struggling to walk properly in them too! Like others have said, the amount of make up, false lashes, super white teeth etc reinforces a certain idea of what successful people should look like. It's narrow minded and dated.

LocalHobo · 18/03/2022 22:57

It seems a dated look for female execs. I don't see women in high heels and bodycon dresses in my industry.
I wonder about the criteria for choosing the candidates,

axolotlfloof · 18/03/2022 22:57

@BigButtons

Absolutely. If they had spent as much time on their business plans as they did on their appearances, I think we would have had a more impressive programme. I really dislike the heels though.

Do wonder how much the production team have to do with the contestants appearance? Given how much control the production company has who can tell how much is mandated by them and if the contestants have any say at all.

RishiRich · 18/03/2022 22:59

In the UK?!
Jaffapaffa · 18/03/2022 23:01

Unfortunately yes, I teach in the UK.

And it's female staff (non heel wearers) who have decided that this is non negotiable.

I despair, I really do.

This isn't what I want young people to think.

and are you going to do this? Or are you going to say I have been told to tell you this but you must make up your own minds?
WhatTheWhoTheWhatThe · 18/03/2022 23:03

It’s a shame Shama had to quit she was about the only woman on there this year that I could take seriously. I also thought the business plans this year were pretty uninspiring!

ChiselandBits · 18/03/2022 23:04

I teach in a traditional indie secondary school and can wear flats, boots, leggings, tunics. At best, for 'on show' like speech day I wear ankle boots with a block heel. I am really disappointed with the identikit women on there and their lack of acumen.
