Ridiculously high heels - Apprentice Final Four

axolotlfloof · 18/03/2022 22:28

Just watching this week's episode.
Really pleased to see 4 women in the final, but why the heels?
Even Karen is wearing them.
They are bad for your feet, balance and just ridiculous.
My Mum's feet were destroyed by heels in the 60s, and I prioritise walking over heels.
Aibu?

@jaffapaffa there are also plenty of medical articles and posts out there that will show exactly what type of damage high heels do, especially if you wear them regularly and don't just prance a few steps from car to desk as I suspect some of those who've come up with that inane advice for your school do...!! And if it's male staff who've come up with that rubbish, well, how often do they go walking about in high heels?!

It's one of the things I dislike about the style of the Duchess of Cambridge; she insists on wearing those silly heels a lot of the time on official engagements...

A few years ago the Royal Orthopaedic College/Hospital had a 3d scanner that showed just what happens to feet in high heels....

@WhatTheWhoTheWhatThe

It’s a shame Shama had to quit she was about the only woman on there this year that I could take seriously. I also thought the business plans this year were pretty uninspiring!
I completely agree! I am assuming Shama's business plan was to expand her nursery business so it would have been interesting had she got to the interview episode.

How wrong to expect Jaffapaffa to tell students that heels are part of the work wardrobe for women. What about a hospital consultant wearing scrubs? At least tell the students that some jobs might mistakenly try to impose their stereotyped ideas about women on employees, not collude with them. I know this is not your opinion Jaffapaffa. I'm just shocked that you are being expected to say it.

bellabasset · 19/03/2022 06:34

They're completely impractical, try going down the escalators in them. I'd like to see Kate setting an example by wearing lower heels when she's out. I remember Samantha Cametin wearing them while pregnant in the photos of her with Davud Cameron going into No 10 when he became PM.

Mummyoflittledragon · 19/03/2022 06:35

I agree this look is really dated. The first company I worked for didn’t allow women to wear trousers. Flats were not allowed. Wide legged culottes had to be approved.

Dh started off wearing two and 3 piece suits. Designer gear etc. Changed into shoes with steel toe caps for the warehouse. It was expected. These days he slings on jeans and a polo shirt and wears the shoes all the time. Even visits clients in jeans. It’s the norm.

Ponoka7 · 19/03/2022 06:35

@axolotlfloof, also there's the safety aspect. I can remember after the Suzy Lamplugh findings, practical clothing than can be ran in was mentioned.

Apperantley Lord Sugar is conservative and has old ideas about dress, so that's what they go with. I can remember a couple of times when he's pulled up those with a quirky style. This series, the foundation hasn't suited the wearer, so I do wonder if it was their's and twice clothes wear worn by each other. But I agree that the 30 minutes to get out the door should be dropped because they couldn't get ready in that time, even the men blow dry their hair.

Quincythequince · 19/03/2022 06:40

Yes YABU.

They can wear what the heck they like. It’s none of yours or anybody else’s business.
As long as they can do what they need to do in whatever shoes they wear, why does it matter.

speakout · 19/03/2022 06:41

Jaffapaffa I know this is not your view, but if I discovered that a teacher was telling my daughter she had to wear heels to succeed I would be complaining strongly to the headteacher, board of governers, Dept of Education, write to my MP and probably go to the press.

Lets hope none of the parents find out staff at your school are teaching this bullshit- it cold come back to bite them on the arse.

Pllink · 19/03/2022 06:45

I don't wear heels, never have as I'm a super casual person. However I didn't even notice the heels and I'm surprised so many people have such a huge issue with it. You aren't wearing them so why are you bothered? Maybe they just want to look good because they're young and on the telly? People just love to judge and have someone to look down their noses at.

Yes all of their business plans were rubbish, but that has nothing to do with their footwear and its absurd so many are correlating the two.

BiscuitLover3678 · 19/03/2022 06:52

@Jaffapaffa

I've been told today that I have to teach my class (Y8) that heels are part of a work wardrobe for women, and that if you want to succeed, it's essential to wear them.

I've objected several times, but have been told that it's not optional.

I'm really not comfortable with this at all.

But yes, apparently there's still a school of thought that says women must wear heels to be successful - hence their appearance in The Apprentice, I suppose.

Wtf who in formed you of this?
Quincythequince · 19/03/2022 06:52

Jesus Christ.

The comments on this thread!

I can’t even pretend I’m surprised by the sheer fucking nastiness here.

Criticising every single aspect of their physical appearance, calling them cheap looking suggestion of pimping themselves out.

You lot are absolutely disgusting.

News flash - they can wear heels and tight dresses if they like.

So what if they have fake lashes, dyed hair etc. So bloody what?!

And they wonder why young women have such such self esteem issues and that they are the demographic to which SM can be the most damaging.

This forum…the nastiness…

Agreed.
I would always try to be closer to the front door than a viewer, and get them to go first into a room, or upstairs.
High heels make women more helpless.

Who is telling you that you have to teach this?
billysboy · 19/03/2022 06:55

Someone should put the high heels argument on Strictly Come Dancing

Seems to be the uniform of choice there

pompei8309 · 19/03/2022 06:56

I love heels, I walked in them all throughout my pregnancy. Not everyone is a size 8 and 6ft tall so for us shorties and chubby gives us better posture and height. It does give you a bit of presence comparing with wearing frumpy flats .
I don’t like the look of “ unkept” so a shower and brushing your hair doesn’t do it for about 99% of us , no matter how good you think your complexion is

Weird. Why do you only have to teach yr8 in heels? What about the rest of your timetable?
Teachers almost exclusively wear comfy flat shoes, we're on our feet all day. The usual dress code means no trainers, but that's all.

This must be a joke ?!
Quincythequince · 19/03/2022 06:56

And yes, their business plans were terrible, but this post was about the footwear only.

It Was bad enough making comments on that and now a group of female strangers have absolutely eviscerated these young women.

millytint44 · 19/03/2022 06:59

Have you seen the sort of shoes Priti Patel wears? I can't bear the woman, but have to acknowledge that however she has got where she has, it hasn't been in high heels!

Exactly.

What a horrible thread that just tears other women down (again).

LizzieSiddal · 19/03/2022 07:03

@jaffapaffa please show your senior management this, which highlights the fact a government committee looked into the very issue of making women wear high heels as part of their uniform, it concluded it was illegal to do so.

www.lawbite.co.uk/resources/blog/is-it-illegal-to-force-women-to-wear-high-heels-in-the-workplace

I would also refuse to tell my Y8s girls that they had to wear heels to “get on”. What about those who will go on to work in for instance science/engineering/ do these women totter around in high heels all day long? My own 31 year old DD works in this environment and not a single woman wears heels. And ask this teacher who is spouting this nonsense if she’s ever been in hospital and seen a Dr/consultant/anaesthetist in high heels!

Behave ! The whole point of the thread is about if women HAVE TO dress a certain way to get ahead in business!! If that's how you chose to dress that's totally fine you do you !! I work in a media company with several female senior managers and never have I seen any of them tottering around in ridiculous heels and tight dresses- they all dress professionally and for themselves frankly !!
Benes · 19/03/2022 07:03

Although I think it's wrong to teach young people that heels are an essential part of a woman's work wardrobe, I don't think we should be criticising other women appearance and clothing choices.

I love heels and spotted them on The Apprentice the other night and commented in admiration.

Maireas · 19/03/2022 07:05

@RandomBasic

I think *@Jaffapaffa* is not saying that the TEACHERS are forced to wear heals but that in careers talks with the children they need to say, make sure you are always on time, women must wear heels to get ahead.

I understood that she had to wear them ("to teach yr8")? Something I've never come across in almost 40 years of state secondary school teaching.
Smart dress code, yes. Flat shoes.

Quincythequince · 19/03/2022 07:06

That was not what the OP posted OLP, so actually ‘you behave’ (WTF - which says that to a grown up? Probably the same kind of person who thinks it’s ok to tear them down)/

This thread went that way because of the posters’ sentiments.

Quincythequince · 19/03/2022 07:06

who says that to a grown up rather.
