To think Mumsnet should set an example with their own recruitment?

Just that really. I've noticed Mumsnet are actively recruiting for a new digital marketing role, and it clearly states that the role is office based.

Having worked in this sector for over 15 years I know that this role is perfectly suited to working from home (if that's the candidates choice of course) with no detriment to performance.

Mumsnet's own jobs portal advertise flexible jobs for working parents, so why are they not applying the same expectations for their own team?

So Yes IABU, Mumsnet can do what they want or
no I am not BU, Mumsnet should be setting an example with flexible working for their employees...

Mumsnet will have their own reasons for making this role office based. You are under no obligation to apply if this doesn't suit you.

phishy · 18/03/2022 20:17

YABU. People work best when there is real life interaction, even if it’s just a couple of days a week.

VladmirsPoutine · 18/03/2022 20:21

Have you applied and asked about potential flexibility?

Theunamedcat · 18/03/2022 20:22

Hmm I would rather work from home with safeguarding software on the pc than in office right now

Not all people!
Treacletoots · 18/03/2022 20:28

@VladmirsPoutine no.. it's actually really underpaid as well Smile

OP posts:
Treacletoots · 18/03/2022 20:29

@phishy disagree. It's down to the individual whether they want interaction or not. My challenge is that they should offer the choice.

I don’t think you’re cut out for marketing if you don’t want interaction.

user1471457751 · 18/03/2022 20:32

Except its not down to the individual whether they want interaction, its down to the employer

VladmirsPoutine · 18/03/2022 20:33

I'm all for working from home tbh but having just glanced through their vacancies they do mention flexibility.

Treacletoots · 18/03/2022 20:34

@phishy it's like you've never heard of Zoom..

Nonsense.
Treacletoots · 18/03/2022 20:42

@user1471457751 the world has changed a lot since the 1970s...

laurenlodge · 18/03/2022 20:44

It's to do with the contract. Office based means they don't have to pay expenses for people to travel in on the occasions they need to be there. Plenty of people will have flexibility without their official work location being home.

Crikeyalmighty · 18/03/2022 20:45

At the end of the day if they want it office based- they want it office based- maybe they had a bad experience with some home workers!

Depends on the people.
Treacletoots · 18/03/2022 20:50

@laurenlodge finally a logical answer. You may well be right. Grin

Ozanj · 18/03/2022 20:53

MN doesn’t pay well generally, so it probably can’t afford someone experienced who might expect to wfh. Inexperienced candidates expect to be office based. So its probably just that

phishy · 18/03/2022 20:55
@phishy it's like you've never heard of Zoom..
I did say real life interaction, OP.

There is no way my (huge) employer would touch a marketeer who wanted to solely WFH.

Treacletoots · 18/03/2022 21:01

@phishy. Well I've 15 years marketing experience, and a senior level and had 3 offers just recently, all fully remote.

Your company does not, in my experience, reflect general recruitment trends in the digital sector. Which BTW marketing and 'digital marketing' are quite different skillsets IMHO

OP posts:
Treacletoots · 18/03/2022 21:04

@Ozanj yeah, I've noticed that too. It's a shame really, they should be setting an example, but instead just try to get people as cheaply as possible. Their choice I guess

I was offered a job by MN years ago, early in my career. It was well paid, and they were impressively flexible. Their whole mantra was 'you'll never have to miss a school play' and they were willing to work around school hours. I was only about 23 at the time and wanted to go into journalism proper so turned it down, but I was incredibly impressed by how understanding they were.

SarahAndQuack · 18/03/2022 21:09

But it's really common to have a contract that simply specifies you're not paid travel if you need to go to the office. So it's unlikely it's that.

TheUsualShitshow · 18/03/2022 21:16

But your assumption is that WFH is just 'better', and that isn't the case for every company or everyone.

I've a 23 year old in my team (digital marketing) who knows she can't work from home, gets demotivated and distracted so always wants to be in. And another team member who is keen to work from home more, but who goes down a rabbit hole without being around others and doesn't prioritise well.

WFH isn't some superior; it's a choice in the job market which will appeal to some and not others.

Treacletoots · 18/03/2022 21:17

Well we could all spend time guessing, but I'm hoping that by making this thread, someone at Mumsnet takes note or, alternatively sees it and gives 0 fucks Grin
