On the look out for great new habits. What are yours? Here are a few of mine to start us off:

  • floss and use interdental in the shower
  • take one old item out of the fridge each time I open it
  • get dressed as soon as I get out of bed to avoid lounging in dressing gown

what are your great habits that help your life run smoothly? I'm in need of inspiration! thanks :)

Develop good sleep habits. Don't fall asleep on the settee after kids are settled.

Get up early even if still tired.

Drink one litre of hot, very weak, tea every morning. Glasses of water throughout the day.

Put on a load of laundry before leaving for school run.

Meal plan with a vengeance and don't form the habit of dropping in to shops for bits and pieces.

Deep cleansing breaths for five minutes.

Make lists and set alarms.

RoseWindow · 18/03/2022 05:28

Great thread. Schoolbags, coats, shoes always in the same place to make mornings less stressful. Never been a ‘breeze’ yet though Grin. Trying to make it a rule that the last one to bed turns on the dishwasher.

MakeUsACuppa · 18/03/2022 05:36

I freeze any left overs in a drawer in the freezer, use it for my lunches, easy peasy and no scrambling about to make sandwiches.

Budget and save for everything, I've been doing it years so it's second nature. Means Christmas is never too spendy as I've saved during the year.

Menu plan, everyone knows where we are and what's for tea, shop to the plan so saves over spending.

I try to tidy before I go to bed but DH and teenagers seem not to share this goal Hmm

Do my exercise app every most mornings and aim for 10k steps every day.

Rina66 · 18/03/2022 05:40

Use the when and then technique to motivate myself - 'when' I've done the ironing 'then' I can watch something on catch up etc

Always have a bowl of soapy water when cooking, for hands, surfaces and reusing implements - means less stuff goes in the dishwasher and the kitchen stays fairly tidy

Only buy clothes that when I put them on I immediately want to do a little jump for joy, so the plan is i love everything in my wardrobe. Also one in, one out rule as I love clothes and helps to focus my mind on whether I need something.

Keep a roll of pedal bin bags in the glove compartment of the car - great if dropping something off and it needs to be left outside (presents etc), but also useful for clearing the car out whilst waiting to pick someone up, also have baby wipes too, to give a quick wipe over whilst waiting.

Ineedaduvetday · 18/03/2022 06:01

Batch cook. Always helps to have lasagna etc frozen in portions in the freezer for a quick meal.

Egghead68 · 18/03/2022 06:07

I walk everywhere and use the stairs not the lift.

I do Duolingo before getting up.

speakout · 18/03/2022 06:16

I exercise every day
I meditate every day
I have a good skin care regime
I drink lots of water and herbal tea
I am compassionate towards myself.

Alondra · 18/03/2022 06:21

Invest in a shopping trolley and walk to shops instead of using a car. Walk and cycle as much as you can.

Always, always use olive oil when cooking instead of butter.

Use an electric toothbrush instead of a manual one.

If you kitchen allows it, use a dishwasher instead of washing dishes manually. Dishwashers use much less water and the electricity consumption is almost negligible.

TheEarthIsNotFlat · 18/03/2022 06:29

For all the water drinkers, does it have to be water? Does squash count? I’ll change to water if I have to but I’d prefer not to.

We have a double kitchen bin. Printed on the top of each bin is what can go in. Left side is the same as our green recycling box. Right side is green recycling bag. It means we can lift out, quick scan for any stray rubbish, and then tip into the appropriate bin outside.

I have a cleaning box upstairs with the same bits as downstairs. Saves running up and down the stairs.

funnyoldonion · 18/03/2022 06:34

Three things I see lying around I deal with immediately: litter, laundry, crockery, it becomes a game of putting them in the bin, basket and sink and helps me keep on top of stuff!

collieresponder88 · 18/03/2022 06:35

@ColourfulOnesie

Always have a bottle of wine in the fridge - you never know how much you need a wine until all the kids are in bed so you can’t go to the shop and you haven’t got any in! Wine
Love it !
UsernameInTheTown · 18/03/2022 06:43

I clean the bathroom naked, mid shower, while deep conditioner and face masks are working their magic 😁.

Benjispruce5 · 18/03/2022 06:51

I always tidy the sitting room by plumping cushions, folding throws, cups in dishwasher, dishwasher on, wipe surfaces before bed.
Always make my lunch, shower or wash my hair the night before so my morning routine is easier .
I’d like to plan my outfit when I grow up(I’m Blush50)

anotherbrewplease · 18/03/2022 07:03

@PuppyMonkey

Grin

I like your tips - follow all of them!

balalake · 18/03/2022 07:07

Not staying up later than usual for any tv programme. Means a consistent night's sleep. IPlayer and other catch up services are my friend, so to speak.

Aspergirl77 · 18/03/2022 07:13

@robovac

This is a work tip for myself. When sending important emails I always check "RSVP" before hitting send R-recipient, make sure don't mix up surnames! S-subject line, especially when I was copying an old email template V-value/ body of the email, in my line of work we mention figures a lot in the emails so it is very important to not accidentally missing one zero or two! P- paste the f*ing attachment
I love that! Especially the ‘P’ Grin - always forgetting the attachments!!
HalloHello · 18/03/2022 07:15

Every morning before we go downstairs, I make all the beds, open a window or 2, collect a load of washing, and put everything in its place. So upstairs is tidy for the day.

Before kids bed, we tidy up all the toys so it's tidy for us coming down to relax.

Before we go to bed, we tidy the sofa, fold blankets, put cups in the dishwasher and generally tidy up so it's tidy for the morning. I like things to be tidy

30 mins of housework in 1 room every day, set a timer, headphones on and crack on.

Clean kitchen as I go while cooking, tidy up and wipe down after every meal.

nannybeach · 18/03/2022 07:16

small open plan kitchen/louge, put everything away as I use it, bake etc. Always leave place tidy, before going out or going to bed.Made me laugh, poster, flossing your teeth in the shower!! Waste of hot water. Get dressed as soon as you get up, so not slobbing in dressing gown, what about that shower then.

Honeymint · 18/03/2022 07:23

What an excellent thread, I’m definitely pinching a few from here!
My best ones would have to be:

  1. Write a two-weekly menu then shop for that menu. It’s so handy to know what you’re making each day and it’s easier to make sure you’re eating enough veg etc.

  2. Cleaning up as I cook. I aim to have the kitchen completely clean by the time the food’s done. (My husband doesn’t do this though which throws everything off.)

  3. Buy things that are on offer when they’re on offer. Perishables go in the freezer and are worked into the next weeks meal plan.

  4. Buy extra birthday cards when I see nice ones / when paperchase discounts the old ones. I usually like to buy specific ones for people but having a drawer with extras in has saved me so many times. (Snap @SuperTed127 !)

  5. Use Duolingo every day. I like the feeling of learning new things and it takes my mind off the stressful things even if it’s only for a couple of minutes.

  6. Do my back exercises and squats while brushing teeth.

Plantsandpuddlesuits · 18/03/2022 07:29

This thread is wonderful!

A few things off the top of my head....

Clear kitchen sides before bed so it's organised for the morning

We online food shop and have a set slot each week and automatic fill of the basket so I just have to edit it. Also have an app and add things to it the minute I think of them then it's done eg lightbulb blows, add one to online shop, sorted!

Dedicated school uniform washing basket and separate wash. This has been a game changer. I have lots of children 🤣 and used to do uniform with normal clothes but it ended up getting mixed up and bits missing so now on a weekend I do all uniform washed dried and put away over the weekend.

Tumble dry all bits eg pants socks wipes. We have a small basket in laundry room all these bits go in to and every other day the go in the tumble dryer and it's far easier.

Cordless hoover a game changer. Can whizz it round really quick as we leave the house

supersop60 · 18/03/2022 07:34

@TeacupDrama

if something takes two minutes or less just do it immediately if you are not motivated to do something set a timer for 5 minutes and then go flat out doing it, then you decide whether to do a further 5 minutes it is amazing how much you can put away, wash up, clean or sort out in just 5 minutes
I do this! Usually 15 minutes; it's like a game trying to beat the clock.
Mnusernc · 18/03/2022 07:38

I would bet my mortgage that 0% of men would include a clean sink as one of their good habits.

cliffdiver · 18/03/2022 07:39

Payday is savings day.

Money goes into savings straight away, rather than just what's left at the end of the month.

Neverendingdust · 18/03/2022 07:40

Have a big glass of water as soon as I wake up and then continue drinking plenty of water throughout the day (2 litres minimum)

Double cleanse at night after removing makeup

Take multivitamins (WellWoman and extra Vit C, D) with breakfast

Make sure no fingerprints on phone camera lens before every pic, you’d be shocked if you don’t do this already

Have only 1 coffee in the morning, I sleep far better for it

hidethetoaster · 18/03/2022 07:58

Turn off mumsnet when meant to be getting on with things (FAIL!)
