This is clearly unreasonable but what do I do now?

DS has a problem with his ear, we’ve been to the GP and it hasn’t resolved.

I’ve managed to get a hospital appointment but it’s some 45 minutes away, with hindsight I know what work are like about time off and I should have called in sick. But I thought because it was health related and for a young child I’d be granted the time off.

They have said no, it’s a school. They just keep saying to rearrange in holiday time or after school.

I think if I lie it could be a disciplinary - I feel so conflicted.

PinaColada123456 Why is your husband abroad that week? I think it might be time that he stepped up to the plate and came back, if you've been the one to have the time off so far

He is WORKING abroad that week. He is supposed to come back because some prat of an HT wont allow his wife to leave 30 minutes early for an important appointment to deal with a worrying problem with their child that could cause hearing problems if not addressed?

Get real! .

@Madamum18 He would be coming back for his CHILD! So 'get real' yourself.

He would be coming back because of unreasonable management at his wife's work!! We will have to agree to disagree!

It isn't generally reasonable for one person to take off at least a full day, rather than the for other one to take off half an hour. It depends how often the one person is being affected with just half an hour though, you'd expect some days to be done by DH, especially when he's in the UK.

Absolutely ridiculous.

Id be handing my notice in over this tbh.

Presumably you would be financially fine to leave a job without one lined up?
CallmeHendricks · 19/03/2022 16:56

@threatmatrix

So, if you run a small business you rely on your staff and one being off without notice can seriously damage it. Obviously she should take it as holiday. I can see that you have never had your own business.
And we can see that you've never worked in a school, where staff can't "take holiday" during term-time. RTFT.
PeaceToEveryOne · 19/03/2022 17:40

Do you have a partner, could he or she do it.

even if the OP worked in a small business, the health of her child comes before a business owner's profits, especially when it's only about half an hour at the end of the day.

berlinbabylon · 19/03/2022 17:45
@Mirw teachers don't get annual leave thats not a choice ffs
And even if were, why should you take a whole day's leave for the sake of half an hour? Schools need the goodwill of staff to function properly. This is not the way to obtain it.

Madamum18 · 19/03/2022 19:31

Yes! .

N1no · 19/03/2022 20:04

You could ask a babysitter/childminders to drive your DS to the appointment and hopefully they are running late for you to be there in time. I don’t think I have ever had an appointment on time.

CallmeHendricks · 21/03/2022 07:15

It's easier said than done to always rearrange appointments out of school hours. Some clinics only run at specific times on specific days.
And how would that work for paediatrics?

WishIwasElsa · 21/03/2022 13:07

Perhaps if you contact the hospital they could offer a slightly later appt if you explain your difficulties.
Surely school realise that with hospital appointments aren't like arranging to get your hair done and you cant be as choosy.
