What exercise do you try and do each week and what benefits do you see from it? Looking to try and get into it a bit more but not sure where to start!

In winter I swim indoors once a week and run twice a week.
In summer I swim outdoors twice a week and either swim indoors or run once a week.
The summer swims are 1.5hours, as are the winter runs.
The rest is 30mins.
So about 2-3 hours a week.

Cheeseandlobster · 12/03/2022 23:42

30 mins hiit plus 5 mins weights and 5 mins pilates 6 times a week. The other day is a rest day. I have to force myself some days but I feel healthier with better skin. Ultimately I am aiming for better mental health, less chance of diabetes, stroke etc and generally feeling more confident in my clothes

Whereisme · 12/03/2022 23:43

How do you all have time to do all this exercise?

Fairislefandango · 12/03/2022 23:44

Eh? Exercise is absolutely about keeping you trim. Alongside other benefits. I'd choose exercise over calorie control any day.

It's well known that you can't outrun a bad diet. Weight loss is almost all about diet. Running and other exercise made me fitter and gave me more muscle tone, but didn't really make me lose weight.

Gonnagetgoing · 12/03/2022 23:46

Run for 20 mins at lunchtime (need to up that).

Body project cardio/boxing classes online every other day.

Vinyasa flow yoga

Lots of walking

Swimming when I can

@Whereisme - yoga twice a week after work or before. Classes online. Running lunchtime or after work.

I have no kids though!

Fairislefandango · 12/03/2022 23:47

Some people don't work, or work part time. Others are willing to do lots of exercise even if it means getting up ridiculously early or doing it late at night. It just depends how determined you are and how important it is to you. I have to walk my big, energetic dog, so a certain amount of exercise is necessary and unavoidable!

853ax · 12/03/2022 23:47

Great to read about all exercise people do, I'd love to fit in more with work& young children find it hard.
Fast walk almost 5km most days
1-2 runs a week 5k about
1 bootcamp class.
1 pilates class
If I was in 20s again would spend lot time on yoga/pilates
Exercise to help manage weight find it motivates me to eat well.
Really love exercise, getting out in air, destressing ECT hope to increase as. My children get older.
I have some friends who do not do any exercise, an odd walk max. all seem very healthy so it hard spot correlation

sofakingcool · 12/03/2022 23:48

An hour of badminton, usually a swim and I'd like to start an exercise class. I'm building myself up to it - both mentally and physically (currently size 20/22 Sad)

Also walk the dog regularly, and have a fairly energetic job (nursery practitioner)

oviraptor21 · 12/03/2022 23:51

Loads. I exercise pretty much every day and have to make sure I have a rest day once a week.
Various sports but if they're not on then I'll go for a run or lift some hand weights instead.
Benefits are I'm not moody! Energises, makes me feel good about myself, good physique, lessens symptoms of a few conditions I have, gets me out meeting people.

Hop27 · 13/03/2022 01:10

HIIT session (F45) 6 times a week and walk around 25-40km's.

lemonnandliime · 13/03/2022 01:20

I aim to do 15000 steps a day minimum, walk everywhere that is walkable.

I have a fold up exercise bike that I use for minimum 45 minutes a day every morning. I put something on the tv and the time passes so quickly.

I have my own weights and do basic weight based exercises a few times a week using YouTube videos.

I despise running it makes me feel ill. Don't particularly like or enjoy the gym. So this keeps things ticking over without having to leave the house.

EarringsandLipstick · 13/03/2022 03:33

5 - 6 HIIT / Strength / Spinning classes a week, mostly HIIT. I do it at 6 am each day, meaning I'm up c540. I'm addicted to it, meaning I sometimes make poor choices eg I'm sleeping badly at the moment so I have at times been awake most of the night & still got up & done a class.

I never really enjoyed walking, preferring running. I run too, tho am recovering from an injury so I'm only doing short runs. However, one lockdown benefit is that I got to love walks, and have discovered the great beaches / woodland / hill walks close to me that I had basically ignored for years. I find mentally I get the most benefit from being outdoors and walking for a few hours.

I'm quite fit, I push myself a lot in my training & I like how I feel, and how my body looks.

For me it's really important for managing anxiety and worry.

However, I've an unhealthy attitude at times - I train even when tired or under the weather & I can't cope if I'm not able to exercise. I'm aware it's not healthy in that sense. I'm also very tired as I'm up so early & on the go all day with work / kids, but don't get enough sleep and this is also not good.

So for me there are undoubted benefits but also challenges.

Kitkat151 · 13/03/2022 04:24

Short dog walks but not every day

GarlandsinGreece · 13/03/2022 04:38

I mix it up. I have a Pilates reformer at home and do a ton of that. Also lift weights, run, spin, practice yoga, take dance classes and walk. Depending on the week, I’ll workout 5-6 times, and it’ll be a combination of the above.

Frollop · 13/03/2022 05:10

Can I ask what motivates everyone to do regular exercise?

When I feel low I tend to stop exercising which I know is the wrong thing to do.

AnnieandMiri · 13/03/2022 05:11

I cycle 2 hours per day (cycle to work) and it's a very easy and pleasant way to sneak exercise in.

I don’t even have to be low not to excercise.... it’s just not part of my routine ( bar an odd local dog walk and a beach walk at the weekend) ....I guess I should make more of an effort
user1498193554 · 13/03/2022 05:50

Lots, but have done for many years, I’m an early doors exerciser.
CrossFit/functional fitness 5 sessions each week. I run as well , sometimes if I have time before a class I’ll do a 5k, and at the weekend I’ll do a longer run. Plus dog walking. But for me as a menopausal woman in my 40’s I focus on strength/weight bearing stuff not just cardio :)

PoxyPixie · 13/03/2022 06:24

I do powerlifting 4 times a week and run 2-3 times a week. I do yoga anywhere from once a week to all 7 days depending on how I’m feeling.

The benefits for me are huge. Between them, powerlifting and yoga have really helped me to reduce the pain I feel from a chronic health condition and running has really reduced the symptoms of another condition (though does sometimes trigger migraines so I need to be careful with intensity). My joints are a lot more stable. I feel stronger. I have better lung capacity and better endurance. I have better posture. My mental health is the best it’s ever been.

I’ve tried other types of exercise but these are the ones I can stick to. I like powerlifting because I can make goals on where I want to get to with my lifts and I can see improvements easily which is motivating for me. With running I can focus on shaving off a little bit of time at Park Run or increasing my distance slightly over the week. Yoga helps me to unwind and relax.

doingitforyorkshire · 13/03/2022 06:36

I run three times a week and do strength training at home three times a week too.
I hate the gym, running clubs, and exercise classes thought, I find that after work, being with family I need time for myself. I love going for long quiet dog walks when I can too.

Lady0racle · 13/03/2022 06:38

You’re going to get lots of responses from serious exercisers who work out most days or have an exercise routine years in the making. Personally, I do a mixture of running, weights and Pilates - mostly done in the early morning.

However, when I first started working out it was nowhere near as intense. I started out with brisk walking with some YouTube Pilates thrown in and went from there.

The key is finding something that you enjoy and will keep doing. It’s worth trying a few things to see what you like.

Mental health benefits. To be fitter. Lose weight.
ThatsBullshirt · 13/03/2022 07:06

In an attempt to get fitter this year I've been doing short YouTube workouts 5x a week alongside the 20 minute (roundtrip) school run twice a day - the way home is entirely uphill so it's a little effort at least. The biggest benefit I've noticed so far (I've only been doing the work outs for a month or so) is I don't feel so sluggish come 4pm.

lljkk · 13/03/2022 07:07

Walking (dog!), run, swim, cycle (commuting). Adds up to like... 600-1000 calories burned/day, or about 14 hours/week.

Benefits: fresh air, hugely helps with my mental health, sleep better than I would without, (debatable) am not fat & stable weight

Negatives: have had a various over-use injuries over the years, every form of tendonitis you can think of
