What exercise do you try and do each week and what benefits do you see from it? Looking to try and get into it a bit more but not sure where to start!

From some one who is raising a family , works full time and exercises regularly ,you'd have to be a person of leisure with paid staff to be spending this much time exerciseing

single parent of 3 working 4 days a week here - I do 3 classes outside the home (2 evening and one morning) used to be when they where at their dads but they are 13,17 and 19 now so get on with things! Other classes are online - I do Body Pump 55 min and 12 min classes 3 nights a week while watching Pointless!

No staff and not a person of leisure!

DrunkenKoala · 13/03/2022 18:23

DD’s school is at the bottom of quite a steep hill, so I do a brisk walk up it each morning about 12mins. Also swim 1km a week.

Italiandreams · 13/03/2022 18:38

Everyone's lives and schedules are different though, it's not necessarily about prioritising, there is nothing I can stop doing in order to give me time to exercise more, although great if you can. It's just about what works for you and makes you feel better.
I swim with a friend once a week so combine exercise and socialising. Try and walk as much as possible , and occasionally try and do something from you tube if I have the energy after sorting housework, finishing work and putting children to bed. My children are young though and I work full time so hopefully will get easier as they get older. Husband has very early starts and works Saturdays so rules out quite a lot of time.

itssquidstella · 13/03/2022 18:49

@douper yes, DH also exercises a lot. He prefers cycling and climbing, although he runs as well.

pawpaws2022 · 13/03/2022 18:51

@SW1amp

Best thing I ever did was buy a Peloton

I do the bike workouts 2 or 3 times per week, 1 or 2 run workouts (the instructor guides you while you run, telling you to slow down, speed up, walk etc) and 2 of the Pilates and strength ones

Because the bike and screen are at home and the classes are on demand, I can find the time during the day

And the app is just the right sort of nagging/gaming to keep me motivated to do classes each week

I've just got one and really like it so far! Just v unfit and my thigh burn is so bad on the bike Blush
Sunshinedreaming2022 · 13/03/2022 18:51

I try and do 15minutes of yoga daily.
Walk the dog 30minutes 5 times a week
Treadmill run - 5k 3 times a week
Swim 30 minutes - twice a week
Pole dance class for 1hour once a week.

More mental health benefits then anything else. I’m still overweight and wobbly

countrypunk · 13/03/2022 19:13

I exercise every weekday morning and I also go to yoga twice a week. I get up 45 minutes early to do it before work. I use YouTube videos, and I do a mixture of weight training, hiit and pilates. It makes me feel so good, and breakfast always tastes absolutely amazing because I'm properly hungry for it. It sets me up for the day.

skippy67 · 13/03/2022 19:34

@douper

Do the people exercising a lot have partners that do similar?
DH runs 3 times week.
Superbabe64 · 13/03/2022 19:43

I do two spin classes, one upper body weight session with PT and try and cycle about 200km/week. Love spin and getting in to road biking is the best thing I ever did...for both physical and mental health.

theyoungishman · 13/03/2022 23:20

@Funkyslippers

theyoungishman is pickleball quite easy? I'm not too bad at badminton but rubbish at tennis! They have sessions at my local gym but too scared to go along
@Funkyslippers - Yes it's really easy to pick up, and great for beginners! I have only played badminton and squash before picked it up well - you should definitely try it Smile
HikingforScenery · 13/03/2022 23:29

@RampantIvy

Pilates and lots of walking. I tried running, but I hate it.
Exactly this for me too, apart from yoga instead of pilates. I found rubbing so boring.
WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 14/03/2022 07:46

Les Mills classes on demand at home - mostly bodypump and body combat and I'm working through couch to 5k (which is a good programme if you are thinking about running).

I'm aiming for a mix of cardio, strength and flexibility for longer term health benefits, but not great at adding in the flexibility right now!

SW1amp · 14/03/2022 09:08

@pawpaws2022

When I first got my peloton, I could just about make the top 50% in the leaderboard on 20 min rides, and would hurt like hell the next day

Stick with it, it gets easier, and having your previous PB score showing makes it so easy to push yourself on each week…

Lastqueenofscotland · 14/03/2022 09:13

Quite a lot and yes DP exercises too. Run 6 times a week (about 40-50 miles all in)
Swim x2 a week and gym once or twice.
Also do a lot of hiking which we are lucky enough to be able to do from our front door.

No children mind!!!

RampantIvy · 14/03/2022 09:27

Inspired by this thread I got up early this morning and did a short run/power walk. I plan to do this every morning.

I shall get the hula hoop out of the garage, although I doubt I could maintain it for half an hour.

Grasping · 14/03/2022 09:32

There’s so much available now with online and on demand classes etc

When I was a single parent 30 years ago I remember running with my son on his bike beside me 😂 I think I had a DVD too but choice was limited unless you went to classes or the gym.

Llamasally · 14/03/2022 14:41

Wow this is inspiring! I used to be very into fitness, after issues from both births I got out of the habit and now finding it very hard to get going again and am always too tired.

Rainydays55 · 14/03/2022 16:09

Thank you everyone for your responses, didn’t expect so many! I haven’t had time to read them yet but I will later on!

For us we do a sport we all participate in in a family friendly club, I go to a normal gym while the kids train and they shower / do home work while our class is on (directly after theirs)

We don't watch tv, we get in from school, eat an early tea and then train from 530-830/9. The days the kids don't train they chill in the house after dinner and I train without them, weekends we compete and Sundays we do nothing but chill.

We are very close and see friends on Saturday etc

Crunchingleaf · 14/03/2022 17:06

I am on maternity leave so I have loads of time for exercise. Pilates once a week, gym 3-4 times a week and then walking after that. At moment I am working on building back up my core after the pregnancy and exercise keeps me sane.

FirstIn50s · 14/03/2022 17:11

I don't go to gym, or run or anything like that. But I generally try to be more active and move more in everything I do. At work I'd always walk to meet/talk with someone, often stand during meetings and so on.

Now that kids are no longer at home much, I have a lot more freedom around that house. My secret is that I'll put on music and dance around at home as I tidy up :) Never with earphones anymore though, since I can't hear the door bell, and had one or two embarrassing when a friend or DD open the door and came in Blush

Hotelhelp · 14/03/2022 19:00

Can any swimmers tell me what to start with?

Instinct would make me do breast stroke I think - is this useless for burning calories?

Thanks

Gonnagetgoing · 14/03/2022 19:04

@Hotelhelp - breast stroke is fine. I think front crawl probably burns more. I’m not that great at breast stroke so do a mixture of front crawl and back stroke.

If you fancy it aqua aerobics is very good, you work twice as hard as you’re in the water and working against that.

fishonabicycle · 14/03/2022 19:17

When I worked in London I used to go to gym in lunchtime, and a fair walk to and from station. So I did that all through my son growing up. Now I just do free YouTube workouts at home.

randomsabreuse · 14/03/2022 22:24

Run 3-4 times a week. 2 X 45 minutes, 1 with a friend while toddler is in classes. 1 parkrun and I try to get in one other. Also do some races because I like other people to do the route planning... Love the escape and getting out of the house.

Fence once a week, sometimes add in an extra session or a competition. Love the tactical side of things.

Need to add in daily yoga and regular strength training.

Would like to add in tennis and a weekly riding lesson.

Need more time and more money!
