To think fcuk all is being done to combat climate change

getdown2021 · 06/03/2022 15:48

Most people don't seem to care and I rarely hear of it anymore despite being told months ago of the dire warnings. Aibu to think no action is being taken either by governments or by the average person?

OP posts:

I was going to respond to the comments on my post, but to be honest I think it's enough to leave them to speak for themselves 🙄
@Kazzyhoward
But burning wood, which is a fossil fuel, isn't entirely good for the environment

Wood is not a fossil fuel.
Burning wood produces carbon emissions which is what we're trying to reduce. It may not be a "dirty" as coal or petrol, but it still produces the very thing we're trying to reduce.

madroid · 06/03/2022 20:18

The pp upthread that said we are adaptable as a species and we'll cope with climate change like we've done in the past is missing one massive point - that is left out of nearly all climate change discussion.

There are too many of us. There's almost 8 billion of us - 8,000,000,000. In another 15 years it will be 9 billion.

There are too many people wanting too many resources on a planet with a finite amount.

The Earth is like anything natural, if you stress it continually, it will become weak and prey to all sorts of diseases.

The best thing that could happen to humanity is a lethal virus that wipes out most of the population. Then planet earth and all of its wonderful creatures and habitats would right itself within 50 years or so.

And the point is?

Viviennemary · 06/03/2022 20:22

I am not that interested in climate change tbh. Putins latest threats are a lot more worrying.

Catcrazy83 · 06/03/2022 20:22

No one worries about paying the mortgage when the house is on fire. Gov/ppl deal the problems as they come, covid/war/cost of living

crackofdoom · 06/03/2022 20:25

madroid
Nope, that doesn't wash when rich westerners use a hundred times* the resources and emit a hundred times the amount of carbon than poor people from sub Saharan Africa. It's a cop out justification.

*ish. The "average" family not nearly so much, billionaires in their private jets a hell of a lot more.

crackofdoom · 06/03/2022 20:27

It's pretty depressing the amount of people on this thread that don't get the connection between our dependence on fossil fuels and Putin's very ability to wage war...🙄

MistOverTheDowns · 06/03/2022 20:30

If that is true, @madroid, it rather begs the point why those with a voice who shout loudest about how we must come up with more and more draconian methods to combat so called 'climate crisis' don't lead the way by not adding to the popoualtion.

But no. Not only do they fly around in private jets, they all ahve more than one child. They don't seem too worried why it comes to having to make a change themselves/

Why are they having children if they tell us we will all be wiped out in the next few years!

Could it be that it is all bullshit and they know it!

Why not set an example by all declaring that they will have no more than one child. Why not issue a decree that only one child per couple is allowed.

If it was as serious as the hysteria suggests why not tackle the population crisis.

They won't because it is all bollocks. But in the meantime, they can whip up hysteria and tax every fucker off the planer. Net Zero-yes, the plebs can have no access to heat and the bit they do use will be taxed.

Princess Nut Nuts-aka Mrs Johnson-tells her foolish husband to put a tax on heating bills while dropping her second child. No concerns about over populating the planet there then.

I do wish people would stop and think for a minute about how all the dots don't join up but the PR job has been a brilliant one.

Who are they?
stuntbubbles · 06/03/2022 20:45

@mummykel16

Burning wood produces carbon emissions which is what we're trying to reduce. It may not be a "dirty" as coal or petrol, but it still produces the very thing we're trying to reduce

And the point is?

Er, don’t burn wood? Fairly clear, I thought.
Theunamedcat · 06/03/2022 22:42

Yup.freeze or starve

Or get nuked

mummykel16 · 06/03/2022 23:30

Er, don’t burn wood? Fairly clear, I thought

And do what instead?

Tulipomania · 07/03/2022 08:00

Burning wood is considered low carbon because it absorbs carbon emissions when it grows, and the carbon it gives off when it is burned is offset by that. It also emits carbon when the tree does and decomposes. So if you burn fast-growing wood, or use waste wood that would be left to rot anyway, it can be considered low carbon.

It is also a renewable resource, because it can be coppiced and regrows, and very much NOT a fossil fuel which is finite - oil, gas, coal.

Still burning wood not as good as solar, wind etc.

Satsumaeater · 07/03/2022 08:24

It's nothing to do with the war. For example, you'd think that the high fuel prices would encourage people to drive more slowly to conserve it; and that they'd stop parking outside my local school for 30 minutes with their engines running. But it doesn't. People won't change their lifestyles until they are forced to. But politicians are short-termist and won't make those changes because they are worried about getting votes. And they won't invest in things that would actually make a difference like safe off-road cycle paths.

I also live close to a private airfield which has been very busy this morning with all the rich people flying around in their private jets.

Satsumaeater · 07/03/2022 08:26

If it was as serious as the hysteria suggests why not tackle the population crisis

because people get all emotional about their "right" to have 4 kids

Not only do they fly around in private jets, they all ahve more than one child. They don't seem too worried why it comes to having to make a change themselves

because they are rich and entitled and think it won't affect them

madroid · 07/03/2022 08:32

Who is 'they' @MistOverTheDowns ?

You think governments are that good at planning and orchestrating their actions and policies?

Our world is run on factions of self interest. There is no overriding adult power who is taking a view for the greater good. Just a load of (mostly) men scrabbling around to do whatever makes them the most money and preserves their power.

We've known about the kind of policies and actions that would halt climate change for at least 50 years - and have done very little.

FFS most people don't even vote for the Green Party in the UK.

I think we can have our current standard of life if the population was about 5% of the level it is now. OR we can all accept no travel, basic food with periods of starvation and a daily struggle to stay warm.

I don't think we can have both our current way of life and halt/reverse climate change.

EmpressCixi · 07/03/2022 08:38

@Kazzyhoward

Yes everything carbon based that burns produces CO2, including the cremation of humans and pets. But you stated that wood is a fossil fuel, when it is most certainly not. It’s hard to take you seriously when you don’t even know what is and isn’t a fossil fuel.

EmpressCixi · 07/03/2022 08:41

@crackofdoom

This is ridiculous, Russia would have the ability to wage war regardless of whether we as a society used fossil fuels or not. The reason Russia can wage war and the U.K. is powerless is because we are tiny with a teeny tiny military and Russia has hundreds of nukes to our what, 5? Which I think may even belong to the Americans on the US airbases here and so only Biden can launch them, not the PM.
AllOfUsAreDead · 07/03/2022 08:42

I'm honestly not bothering or caring really. I would care, if our governments and businesses would show they actually care too, but as they clearly don't give a shit, I don't either because my changes make zero difference.

Unless we all agree to big changes across the world, it's not going to help. And considering one world leader is currently threatening to use nuclear weapons if he feels threatened, then I'd say the chances of getting everyone to cooperate is nil.

Just try getting people on here to not have multiple showers a day, not drive their unnecessary suv and not go on holidays abroad. You'll literally get called jealous and nasty. It's not going to change.

I'm just glad that if another poster is right and we only have 80 years left, I'll be dead by then thank god.

Kazzyhoward · 07/03/2022 08:46

@madroid

FFS most people don't even vote for the Green Party in the UK.

Hardly surprising when they have extreme policies in climate change and huge gaps in not having any policy in other vital areas.

Theunamedcat · 07/03/2022 09:02

The green party arnt even credible on green policy its all pie in the sky

TacoCats · 07/03/2022 09:04

thing is it's pointless the U.K. doing all the green things because were only accountable for 0.5 percent of carbon admissions.
China, India etc need to be on board! It's all fucked, thanks to selfish countries like those.
The big wind storms we had this year one after another and the warm winter wasn't normal either but you just see people being gormless like "omg what's happening?" Like they don't have a clue. Makes me angry, come 2100 a lot of the planet will be beyond ruined.

Verysadatwork · 07/03/2022 09:06

Industry is acting OP - has been for years. I could write a book about the future of automotive.
Don’t give up please !

MistOverTheDowns · 07/03/2022 09:06

When I'm being charitable, I think of the Green Party as well named...a bunch of green-in the sense of knowing nothing-gobshites. Literally, naive Greenhorns.

But when I think of speaking the truth, I think of them as a bunch of dangerous stupid individuals who can't even define a woman. As most 5 year olds can do this, I draw the conclusion that they shouldn't really be allowed out without supervision.
