To wonder if the government have started any planning on what if a nuclear weapon hit britain

Even in the current climate, I don’t actually believe that a nuclear bomb will be hitting the UK.

But I wondered if the government have prepared for the eventuality.

I heard that in the 70s/80s there were loads of leaflets and adverts of what we should do if we were attacked.

In other countries they have bomb shelters and sirens.

I wouldn’t have a clue what to do. The only thing I do know is that I would want to be with my family when it happened.

Anyone one else wonder about this?

@Esspee

We Scots in the central belt would be the first to go as Faslane Naval Base is a prime target. We will be praying we get Independence before there’s a nuclear war because one of the first things that will happen when Scotland reverts to being an independent country is that we will send all the nuclear submarines to England probably Milford Haven.

I'm sure Milford Haven would RTS 'not at this address' as it's in Wales not England.

CockingASnook · 06/03/2022 01:51

Never mind the fallout, what will happen to house prices?

Damnloginpopup · 06/03/2022 02:19

Boris says wash your hands and sing a song

@Meltinthemiddle

We got bombed to shit during the war because of the dockyard so I guess we will be fucked. During the 80's I lived 2 miles away from the dockyard and I am sure I remember my mum being given iodine tablets with a leaflet in case of a nuclear disaster.
We got sent iodine tablets in 2002 in Ireland because of worries about Sellafield. We were all told to throw them out when they expired and they decided not to send any more out!

Buy a house in the countryside with a decent bit of land. Build a bomb shelter a few metres underground. Stock it with everything you and your family could possibly need for a few months, including some weapons for the inevitable post apocalyptic wasteland raids. Sorted.

Oh sorry, I should have said at the start - be rich.

Pyewhacket · 06/03/2022 02:46

What country of our size has nuclear fall out shelters for all the population ?. Lots of work was done on nuclear attack in the Cold War, most was ridiculed as

Lancrelady80 · 06/03/2022 02:55

There's a website where you see the closest bunkers to you - and a review of their state of (dis)repair.

Not sure it makes comforting reading.

Can't get link to paste, but Google "Nuclear bunkers near me" and click on the result from subbrit.org.uk (about four results down on my hits.)

You make it sound like people knew what to do in the event of a nuke in the 70s and 80s

I think I must have avoided the leaflets because I certainly didn’t have a clue

@TwoLeftSocksWithHoles

I understand that we can't digest sweetcorn, so when the 'balloon goes up' and society collapses i calculate that with four tins of sweetcorn, a washing-up bowl and a small nail brush, one should be able to survive without additional food forever...
I always though this too, but turns out we do digest the inside of the sweetcorn, just not the outer shell. So the sweetcorn you see in your poo has been mostly digested, even though it doesn't look like it. Blew my mind!
Lanascz · 06/03/2022 02:57

How much notice would anyone realistically have?

I'd do my best to survive, no matter what. As long as I can, I can help someone else, and that's what would keep me going.

OmgIThinkILikeYou · 06/03/2022 02:58

We'll be off to the local pharmacy and die together on a mix of whatever fun drugs we can get our hands on.

Is that one of Baldricks culinary tips🤣

dayswithaY · 06/03/2022 03:01

There's a nuclear bunker near me that is now a tourist attraction, we went there once and it was creepy - all 1980s safety equipment and a cafe. Not sure they imagined people would ever consider using it for its original purpose in 2022 though.

user1471439310 · 06/03/2022 03:14

Here in the US supposedly there is a bunker deep below the White House, Biden and his crew will be safe not us minions.

I think most of the nutrients would be sucked out after a few passes, but I'm no expert, maybe we could ask the Mythbusters to do an experiment?

1forAll74 · 06/03/2022 03:26

No point in planning really. I always think about the japenese atom bombs, that landed on Hiroshima in the last war. Just a huge bomb, and the after effects, that blew up eveything around, and spread out all over the landscape gradually, and killed thousands of people and people ended with burnt bodies and full of radiation. I was 6years old then, and remember seeing all the photo's in the newspapers.

MeanderingGently · 06/03/2022 03:32

There are 'secret' bunkers under the boarding houses at Eton for all the posh folks...I have seen them. They were built to withstand nuclear attack but no, there's no plan these days....many of the bunkers are used as wine cellars currently!

There are also rumours that the secret passages also extend underground to Windsor Castle and the Queen's bunker, but I'm inclined to believe that particular rumour isn't true.

Morph22010 · 06/03/2022 05:48

If you listen to relax by frankie goes to Hollywood that has the Voiceover from one of the old adverts

Mummyoflittledragon · 06/03/2022 05:51

@LovedayCL

Can you imagine if the people that end up surviving are only the current government ministers. It’s a reversal of natural selection. Survival of the Dimmest.

SquirrelG · 06/03/2022 05:51

Or they'll have prior warning and already got themselves out to New Zealand (which is where, over the last 5-10 years, many super rich have bought up property as somewhere safer to go if needed).

I think we are going to have to start getting picky about who we let in Hmm Not sure we want Boris & Co here tbh.

Ladywinesalot · 06/03/2022 05:58

To stand outside our doors and clap for keyworkers.

Oh, wait…

Rosehugger · 06/03/2022 05:59

Started any planning? I imagine there has been a plan since 1962 if not before.

User76745333 · 06/03/2022 06:00

As I see others have now pointed out, Milford Haven is in Wales. But don’t let that stop a bit of English bashing..Hmm

Ladybookreader · 06/03/2022 06:10

The films that were shown in the 80s terrified us all I remember most of the class crying, most likely you would have minimal warning if worst happens it won't just be 1 hitting us and I'd hope to be gone fast anf not linger

Libertybear80 · 06/03/2022 06:13

We've got a 1 foot thick concrete world war 2 bunker in the garden but even that wouldn't help!
