To wonder if the government have started any planning on what if a nuclear weapon hit britain

Even in the current climate, I don’t actually believe that a nuclear bomb will be hitting the UK.

But I wondered if the government have prepared for the eventuality.

I heard that in the 70s/80s there were loads of leaflets and adverts of what we should do if we were attacked.

In other countries they have bomb shelters and sirens.

I wouldn’t have a clue what to do. The only thing I do know is that I would want to be with my family when it happened.

Anyone one else wonder about this?

I think I must have avoided the leaflets because I certainly didn’t have a clue

I'm glad I was blissfully unaware of it in the early 80s and never knew how close we came to nuclear war. My parents never talked about it and neither did school. I only found out about it all much later.

@OrangeCinnamonCroissant

Does anyone remember this book (and the televised version)

]]

I remember that book! I was born in the mid 60’s. Spent my 80’s youth waiting to die from a nuclear attack. When I went to University I went to a lecture about pandemics from an esteemed epidemiologist. After that I decided that we would all die from a pandemic virus. It feels not fair that we are facing a pandemic and The-Madman-In-The-kremlin all at the same time!

@User76745333

As I see others have now pointed out, Milford Haven is in Wales. But don’t let that stop a bit of English bashing..Hmm
Makes a surprising change, Grin
LunaTheCat · 06/03/2022 06:23

@SquirrelG

Or they'll have prior warning and already got themselves out to New Zealand (which is where, over the last 5-10 years, many super rich have bought up property as somewhere safer to go if needed).

I think we are going to have to start getting picky about who we let in Hmm Not sure we want Boris & Co here tbh.

Yep, I thought the same . The last thing we need is a whole lot posh English-folk. I am not sure that NZ would be all that great in the event of an apocalypse ... but we , on the other hand, have Jacinta - I can just see her and Ashley doing the 1o’clock post apocalypse briefing!
oakleaffy · 06/03/2022 06:28

@Xpologog

The government have got a bomb shelter for themselves. I don’t think they give a flying fig what happens to anyone else. But I could be wrong.
@Gotajobthrunepotism

Watch, if you can ''When the Wind Blows'', by Raymond Briggs.

It goes into exactly what would happen if there was a nuclear attack.

The elderly protagonists build ''An inner shelter, or refuge'' under the stairs, as per Govt. instructions that came through every door in those unsettled days.

Deeply sad, though.

~The old trailer.

Fivebyfive2 · 06/03/2022 07:06

@oakleaffy, i remember watching that in my high school history class!

speakout · 06/03/2022 07:10

I have bought 6 months supply of iodine tablets for my family.

Polyanthus2 · 06/03/2022 07:19

I remember, after Chernobyl, we weren't to eat deer meat or sheep meat from the Scottish hills as it was contaminated - that lasted a few years.

Fortunately we are south west of Russia and the prevailing winds are from the SW so anything in the air should blow their way from here.

FurryBandito · 06/03/2022 07:22

Iirc we duck and cover. Under a table or pop a door off hinges and hold it over you. Just like that.
Wrap bodies up and place them outside, bury if possible.
Brush off any flakes that land on us before re-entering our homes.

But the advice might have changed since I were a nipper.

I remember that too. Wasn’t it called ‘Protect And Survive*

I vaguely recall baked beans being involved but could be imagining it.

Sunnierdays · 06/03/2022 07:24

I think we need to start worrying when the royals start a rushed tour of New Zealand Grin

70kid · 06/03/2022 07:30

I just finished reading James Herbert Domain
About nuclear war and giant rats
Apparently radiation doesn’t affect rats 😂
So if you survive you might have to slog it out with man eating rats 😂

tarsome · 06/03/2022 07:33

There is a plan for such emergencies, though not of the Protect and Survive kind. My late SIL was in charge of an area in the north of England. Her job was to designate who got into the safety areas/ bunkers and who didn't, jobs/functions. They clearly had names attached to such functions.

MRex · 06/03/2022 07:34

General knowledge seems a bit weak around here. NATO has a deterrence and defence policy with US weapons in Europe. UK and France also have nuclear weapons to deploy if needed. Most importantly, there is the capability to destroy bombs before they land; so full destruction wouldn't happen though radioactive fallout is likely. The reason the US have weapons kept close, in Europe, is to have the response time to destroy any weapon launched before it reaches western Europe; that would leave a lot of destruction in Russia and for the sake of ordinary Russians let's hope Putin doesn't get that desperate.

oakleaffy · 06/03/2022 07:35

@OmgIThinkILikeYou

We'll be off to the local pharmacy and die together on a mix of whatever fun drugs we can get our hands on.
Pharmacies these days have very little ''Fun drugs'' because of security issues... often ''Controlled drug owing notices'' are given as CD's are ordered in.

Shouldn't laugh, but this did make me laugh out loud 😂
amylou8 · 06/03/2022 07:39

Boris has no doubt kitted out the No 10 party bunker. If he remembers he'll send us a quick text on the way down telling us we have four minutes to live.

SartresSoul · 06/03/2022 07:40

Too busy figuring out loopholes to protect the oligarchs. Boris might be too busy choosing his new wallpaper. Definitely not bothered about us, they showed us that throughout the pandemic.

FurryBandito · 06/03/2022 07:41

Boris & Co will be developing a handy App we can all download so we can test our and report our daily personal radiation levels. There’ll be a link taking us to a form to fill in to get a consignment of iodine tablets and a bottle of calamine lotion for any radiation burns. Other advice will include:

The clinically extremely vulnerable told to stay indoors.

The not clinically extremely vulnerable told to stay indoors.

If you do absolutely have to go outside (say if the dog needs a shit) then wear two of the blue masks you have laying around after the pandemic.

Daily press conferences will be given at 5pm daily with charts of hospitalisations, deaths and radiation hotspots. SAGE will predict future death tolls.

If you need to seek medical advice DO NOT ATTEND YOUR DOCTORS SURGERY OR HOSPITAL as they won’t be there.

SirChenjins · 06/03/2022 07:43

The only planning this Govt is doing is to plan how they can award potential arms and other supplies contracts to their pals, and how they can get themselves down to the bunker.

Otherwise no - there’s no planning that can save the rest of this country in the event of a nuclear attack.

Not sure about rats...Bet they would be affected by radiation, as they are mammals like us, but cockroaches...

Mum said in 1970's/80/s when there was nuclear threats before, Cockroaches and other insects are immune.

World be like:

ButtonSister · 06/03/2022 07:48

@Esspee

We Scots in the central belt would be the first to go as Faslane Naval Base is a prime target. We will be praying we get Independence before there’s a nuclear war because one of the first things that will happen when Scotland reverts to being an independent country is that we will send all the nuclear submarines to England probably Milford Haven.
Milford Haven is in Wales
fungh · 06/03/2022 07:51

I have bought 6 months supply of iodine tablets for my family.

I read these were pointless, hasn't stopped the panic buying though

youhadmeatjello · 06/03/2022 07:51

@speakout what one did you get? I’d have no idea what the dosage would be and what toddler DS could have! Did you get potassium iodide?

GalaPie · 06/03/2022 07:51

I think you're supposed to fill the bath with cold water and paint the inside of the windows white.
I believe at one point the govt had some sort of emergency food store consisting of enriched biscuits, enough for 50m people for three months or something like that, but I think it was dismantled in the 80s as the threat receded.
I don't think hobnobs would cut the biscuit today though.
