Child scared by dog.

My daughter who is five was walking along a low wall when I dog barked at her and made her jump so she fell off onto her wrist. To be fair the dog was stationary and sat with the owners next to the wall but they made no attempt to see if she was alright and seemed almost smug that she got what was coming her for getting close to their dog. If they knew their dog was a barker why didn't they move to side? Aibu to be mad at the owners? Why are some dog owners so entitled? Perhaps it's just one of those things but at least a look of concern wouldn't have gone amiss.

The child suddenly appearing above the dog probably made it jump.

gannett · 05/03/2022 13:39

@Boppityboopp

Thankyou. The dog wasn't on the wall, it was on the pavement, she didn't know it was there. It was at was a beach so there are dogs everywhere.
Maybe this is a learning moment for her to be aware of what's around her so she knows a dog is there next time.
Chloemol · 05/03/2022 13:45

Sorry you allow your daughter to walk on a wall, low or high doesn’t matter a d have the audacity to be cross with a dog owner, whose dog is doing what dogs do, ie bark

Lesson for you, don’t allow your child to walk on walls.

CounsellorTroi · 05/03/2022 13:46

Sometimes dogs bark though, it doesn't mean they're out of control or aggressive.

Yes. It was probably just saying hello, or saying to the owners “look there’s someone walking along the wall”.

SexyLittleNosferatu · 05/03/2022 13:48

You are being absolutely ridiculous.

A dog barked. Your kid jumped. That's it.

DontWiltMySpinachPlease · 05/03/2022 13:49

My daughter startled a dog, dog then startled my daughter.

Bluetitsfly · 05/03/2022 13:50

Woof woof.... translation... mind you don't fall!

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 05/03/2022 13:51

YABVU.

Dogs bark. That's just life. It's not the owners fault your DD fell off - you should have had hold of her if she was balancing along a wall like that anyway.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 05/03/2022 13:52

Maybe your child startled the dog first, hence it barked? How injured could she possibly have got from a low wall?

Susu49 · 05/03/2022 13:52

This.

And as for him being "a barker", even quiet dogs bark sometimes, and they're not autonomons.

I wonder how you reacted to the situation? I have no doubt she cried when she fell but children learn fear much more from how they see us react.

NippyWoowoo · 05/03/2022 13:55

'If they knew their dog was a barker' well, I'm sure they did...as dogs bark.

SoupDragon · 05/03/2022 13:55

Utterly ridiculous. 😂😂

if a dog bark is likely to make your child fall off a wall, don't let her walk on them without close supervision.

Blossomtoes · 05/03/2022 13:56

Dogs bark. Shocking, isn’t it? This is the first dog thread I’ve ever seen that’s been on the dog’s side.

TellMeMoreHellebore · 05/03/2022 13:56

why didnt YOU see the dog and pre empt it?
why weren't YOU holding her hand preventing a fall
why didnt YOU say something to the dog owners at the time?

or were you not actually there....or were you there but not watching/head in phone?

Wingedharpy · 05/03/2022 13:57

Of course they are unreasonable.
Imagine taking a dog out in public without putting it on mute!

QuillBill · 05/03/2022 13:58

You were the ones 'on the move' and causing the environment to change so you were the one, as the adult, who should have been looking out for hazards. They were just sitting there.

I know, some people are so entitled Grin
PineForestsAndSunshine · 05/03/2022 14:01

I hope your DD is ok, that sounds like it hurt Flowers

Why are some dog owners so entitled?

I do wonder if the dog’s owners were thinking the same about you. They had picked a spot next to a wall where their dog would not disturb any one and then a child approaches on the actual wall itself. Of course children do love to walk on walls, but it’s not their primary purpose.

IMO neither of you were ‘entitled’, just both locked in your own perspective of the situation. It happens.

FairyCakeWings · 05/03/2022 14:01

A dog can’t harm a child by barking at her, so no, I wouldn’t expect the owners to stop a dog barking at a child that was walking towards it.

Your dd hurt her wrist because she lost her balance and fell off a wall, not because of a dog sitting on a pavement beside it’s owner.

BertieQueen · 05/03/2022 14:09

Dog hasn’t done anything wrong. Dog might not be a barker your daughter may have made the dog jump and it barked as a reaction.

Your daughter lost her balance, the same thing could have happened if A car beeped as it passed etc and made her jump.

TidyDancer · 05/03/2022 14:15

I can't see a single thing either the dog or the owners did wrong here. Literally nothing.

Why would you be mad at the owners for nothing? In what way are they entitled? This is such a non-event I'm actually embarrassed for you.

Boppityboopp · 05/03/2022 14:15

Okay I can see I'm in the minority here but I will just clarify. The wall was no more then 2 feet high and I was watching her. We were at a beach with our dog and there were lots of kids and dogs around. She was not above the dog. If my dog barked at random people who walked past them I would at least say sorry and guide them away from small children but then I guess that's just me!

The dog owners did nothing wrong… why are some parents so entitled and expect everyone to move out the way for their precious child…

They don't need to apologise - their dog hasn't done anything wrong. The dog was sat quietly next to its' owners - your DD's approach scared it and it barked. It's a non-event, really.
