Let’s talk stupid and random fears, for a laugh

To have a break from people being up in arms about pancakes or being vaporised in a nuclear war, let’s talk really random fears.

I’ll start. Sometimes in the middle of the night, I think a rat might swim up the bowl while I’m having a wee and nip my bum.

Also when I’m walking near a body of water, I think, what if I throw my handbag in there? And hang on to it a bit more tightly.

If I have bare feet on the floor while I’m watching a horror movie, they’ll get attacked. Socks are fine.

On my usual dog walk I have to pass a big puddle - it is always there (under a train bridge) in the summer it gets shallower(a centimetre if so) but in Winter it would get up to ankle deep.
My springer loves drinking from it.

EVERY time I walk past I am v v careful as my irrational fear is I will slip / fall, bang my head, end up in it face down and drown

buddy79 · 01/03/2022 23:01

Things that fly… not birds but moths, butterflies, maybugs etc - yurgh! Especially those giant stick insects .. the thought of them getting tangled in my hair aaargh!!

And slow moving large machinery. No idea why!

DotBall · 01/03/2022 23:04

I can’t look at the underside of a pier. The thought of it being uncovered, then disappearing under all that water makes me feel really odd.

Blueberriesonmyshreddies · 01/03/2022 23:05

Ominous and threatening structures such as wind farms, Jodrell Bank, sea defence forts that type of thing. They give me that feeling of dread an impending doom scenario.

KatherineofGaunt · 01/03/2022 23:07

When I'm swimming in the deep end of the pool, especially doing backstroke, I get scared a shark will come and get me.

XenoBitch · 01/03/2022 23:08

Cruises ships. I have never been on one, but when visiting a seaside town and seeing one out at sea... I try not to look at it. Something that big and manmade should not exist. They give me the creeps.

Naughtylittleflea · 01/03/2022 23:09

Minotaurs
Monkey puzzle trees
Sink holes

HarrietSchulenberg · 01/03/2022 23:10

The deep end of the swimming pool.
Hate to say it, OP, but my grandma's neighbour was actually bitten on the arse by a rat that climbed up into her toilet in the night. House backed onto the canal and the toilets were all of the outside variety (even in the late 1970s), and there were a lot of rats. I remember my grandma, my mum and aunt talking about it in hushed tones with much gesticulating to fill in the missing words. It was their attempt to hide the story from us kids but it failed miserably and we sat, agog, drinking it all in and loving every minute of it. Took me ages to realise that that was the reason we all had to sing when we went outside for a wee! Luckily those cottages all have indoor toilets now, and probably have rat gates fitted to the pipework.

I really get what you mean about wanting to throw your bag in the water. I get that all the time, especially if I’m walking over a bridge. I just imagine myself throwing my bag or my phone. My Aunt is the same and so is one of my friends so I’m guessing it’s fairly common.
joydivisionovengloves71 · 01/03/2022 23:11

@MrsDeadpool

If I hang my foot over the edge of the bed, something will grab it.
Well that's a given, everyone knows that!

I sleep with my arms tucked under my body. If they're at the side of me, a rat will run up the bed and bite my fingers off. I dreamt that as a small child and at 51 I certainly believe it will happen

Wineat5isfine · 01/03/2022 23:18

I always think I’m going to throw my phone in water, whenever I’m near the river! Very strange.

I can’t look in mirrors when it’s dark, the lights have to be on.

I hate driving in the dark - I’m convinced something is going to jump out in front of me and I’ll have an accident.

Walking over water - on a bridge for example, terrifies me. I almost feel like I’m going to throw myself in.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 01/03/2022 23:19

Phones ringing in an empty house.

The tube because of the tube monsters.

Escalators because of the escalator monsters.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 01/03/2022 23:20

When I'm a passenger in a car, I'm always really worried I'll reach out and slap the back of a cyclists head. I have no idea why. It's like I'm convinced my body will randomly do it.

SallyAnn32 · 01/03/2022 23:20

Fog. That shit can sweep you up and take you to god knows where and no one will see 🌫

The moon has always freaked me out since I was young. Especially a full moon.

impossible · 01/03/2022 23:20

I'm with you on rats coming out of the toilet bowl OP. I had a panic about it recently and tried to keep the lid down. Gave up in the end - unreliable DH and DCs - but as you've just reminded me I'll probably try again.

And speaking of toilets I'm scared of the sound of them flushing at night.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 01/03/2022 23:21

Oh! SUSPENSION BRIDGES! I got it into my head as a child that they are attached to the clouds. I cannot look at a suspension bridge without cringing.

Linguini · 01/03/2022 23:21

These are creepy especially when you see loads of them together...

Let’s talk stupid and random fears, for a laugh
SallyAnn32 · 01/03/2022 23:22

@HunterHearstHelmsley 😂

impossible · 01/03/2022 23:22

I also worry I might grab the steering wheel when I'm a passenger in a car.

joydivisionovengloves71 · 01/03/2022 23:22

@BorisBooster

I fear when walking the dog I'll find a dead body Shock
It's a possibility, as most dead bodies seem to be found by people walking their dog. Funny how people walking on their own don't seem to find them 🤔
noblegreenk · 01/03/2022 23:22

@Googlecanthelpme

Google earth freaks me out. I think it’s the fact that you don’t know what you might see when you start scrolling around.

Also the sea, not like the beach. But the big sea, where it’s just fucking sea for miles and miles and it’s ridiculously deep and dark and who knows what the fuck is going on down there.

It’s just unnecessarily big. No need.

Also holes, again similar to the sea thing, who knows what’s down in the dark hole. Putting your hand into a dark hole in the wall, huh nope!

These aren’t phobias as Such, just things I really don’t like.

I agree about Google earth. It's totally irrational but it really freaks me out! I also hate how big and vast and dark the sea is. I get especially niggled by the sea on googled earth - when you zoom in on just a bit of dark ocean it makes me feel a little bit sick. And I don't like the underside of ships/boats.
Linguini · 01/03/2022 23:23

Heights is quite a normal bog standard phobia, but I get it quite bad.

I can't stand at the bottom of a tall building and look up at it because I get the same feeling as though I'm standing at the top looking down.

I can't look at rock climbers because it makes my feet feel weird.

WheelieBinPrincess · 01/03/2022 23:25

@joydivisionovengloves71 not really- I assume it’s the dogs that sniff them out and the owners come and have a look…

That this pain will never stop.

Ladybirdbookworm · 01/03/2022 23:39

Disused hotels and theme parks … I regularly torment myself looking at videos on YouTube of derelict fairgrounds.
Also I’m terrified of fish and often jump out of the bath at the thought that one might be in there with me.
I’m off now to Google old Pontins sitesShock
