Let’s talk stupid and random fears, for a laugh

To have a break from people being up in arms about pancakes or being vaporised in a nuclear war, let’s talk really random fears.

I’ll start. Sometimes in the middle of the night, I think a rat might swim up the bowl while I’m having a wee and nip my bum.

Also when I’m walking near a body of water, I think, what if I throw my handbag in there? And hang on to it a bit more tightly.

If I have bare feet on the floor while I’m watching a horror movie, they’ll get attacked. Socks are fine.

DH hates toads, he’s genuinely petrified. Twice on holiday we’ve come back to the room and found a huge one loitering on the mat in front of the room. It’s like the fox in fleabag. Might have to google that toad…..
I hate them and frogs...... don't know why but I've always been scared of them I would have died if I'd been on that holiday! I saw one once years ago in a street near my work and now I avoid that street and only walk down it if I really have too, on alert the whole time sweating!! Makes no sense..... It's not like it will still be there!

Oh god so many of these!

Cotton wool, shoe laces, felt etc and the thought of my nails catching on it makes me go all goosebumply and nauseous.

Horses. Legs too long, too fragile and when they’re being silly and rolling around like dogs do sometimes seeing their long spindly legs in the air freaks me out.

Ships. Too big. Petrifying. Particularly the bottom of them.

The sea. Gives me the heebie jeebies. Too vast.

On a bridge or tall building I’m scared I’ll throw myself off. Also terrified of my hands doing something inappropriate like throwing hot drinks or slapping someone while they’re talking.

Sharks in the loo, swimming pools and shower head.

Bananas. Absolutely petrified of them.

Underwater machinery

Swimming in bodies of water you can't see into, like lakes, I find the sea completely fine though strangely

that 80's puppet from tv am sorry i cant name him i can talk about my fear as long as i dont say the name i had nightmares about it kidnapping me as a child whats stranger is that i absolutely adore all other puppets and had pet rats for many years but still run screaming if it apears anywhere

I always have a fleeting worry when I'm at the hairdressers that I've caught nits.

CanIJustHaveAWord · 03/03/2022 11:19

Yes to the Bermuda Triangle one (what ever happened to all that? I had an irrational fear that I would disappear into it despite living in north west England and never flying anywhere Grin

BuddhaForMary · 03/03/2022 12:10

@CanIJustHaveAWord I had that fear too, was certain I'd get lost in there despite never actually being anywhere near it 😂

Yes to underwater machinery, huge ships (especially the hull 😱) and submarines. Shudder. Awful.

Omg yes! Belly buttons make me feel physically ill and sometimes quite faint. Cannot explain why at all.
I’m terrified of people in costumes, if I can see their human face, it isn’t too bad but if they have a giant mascot head on then hell no! If we’re out somewhere and they are there, I literally abandon my kids and leg it Grin they approach you so much more when your kids are with you, obviously as I suppose children think giant characters are great!

Dh just stands there and is like “oh mummy’s off again, she’ll be back shortly!” Grin

I hate driving over train tracks. I have a fear the barriers aren't working, or communication has broken down and the train is going to hit me. I will drive the long way round town so I don't have to cross the train tracks. If I have no choice, like if I'm in someone else's car, I tense up until we are over them.
This is another of mine, too! We have a crossing near our house and I always wind the window down so I can hear if there's a train coming. Interestingly, my parents live near a different crossing but I'm not scared of that one because there's a station about 20m further down the line, so trains go fairly slowly.

I want to say yes about the dark, too. I hate having to go to the loo in the night. My imagination runs riot and I struggle to forget any scary things I've ever seen - so I imagine all sorts outside my bedroom! And don't talk to me about going downstairs, where there are dark rooms with partially-open doors!

This is why I close all the doors downstairs when heading to bed, I'm a lifetime insomniac and am always the last one downstairs. I'm also a forgetful muppet who has to go back downstairs for my medication and the thought of being dragged into a dark room consumes my thoughts as I go down the stairs. How I've made it into my 40's without giving myself a heart attack I'll never know.

I made the mistake of watching The Haunting of Bly Manor. I have to shut the doors too, and I'm still freaked out by any darkened window or dark bit of house!
