Come tell me I’m an awful mum

Pancake day obviously

I always dread it. I’m a fairly ok cook but there are two things I can’t do, fry anything or mash anything. I burn fried stuff or undercook it and I can never get none lumpy mash.

I had ago at making pancakes for DD and I.

Whatever I did it didn’t work as it came out lumpy and uncooked in the middle.

DD (aged 7) is now crying saying all her friends at school will be having pancakes and it’s not fair – she’s right, from FB I can see at least 20 of the 26 in her class have had pancakes today. She’s stomped off to her room after telling me she hates me.

Just me and her at home so no-one else to have another attempt. I’ve used all my milk, flour and eggs trying to make them, I had several attempts.

Why am I so useless? Tell me I’m an awful mother and she’s never going to forgive me.

DD doesn't like the ready made pancakes (finds them salty) and last year I had one of those ready made batters and it still went wrong!

Oh shit, I forgot. Luckily so did DD. We'll do them tomorrow (if I remember) Grin

NightshiftNancy · 01/03/2022 20:13

I made beautiful pancakes (both children refused to eat even a bite of them) but ended up falling out with my stroppy four year old over him having the wrong cup for his water. In the eyes of our children we are all absolutely appalling human beings Wink

Hellsbells35 · 01/03/2022 20:14

I would try again tomorrow so she still get them. Have you got an electric whisk or blender? Will stop lumps

TatianaBis · 01/03/2022 20:14

You just need a pancake pan, that really solves most pancake problems.

IvorCutler · 01/03/2022 20:15

Top setting is too hot, medium-high is best. I’m sure all ready made ones won’t be too salty. Find nice ones next year and pretend you’ve made them while she’s at school.

AnyName1 · 01/03/2022 20:17

I would never make that child another pancake in my life.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 01/03/2022 20:17

She is 7. She is old enough to make her own pancakes (with your supervision of course). I bet she wouldn’t complain about lumps then!

Add extra water if necessary and whisk well. You can also use a blender for the batter if you want but that just creates more washing up. Use a smoking hot pan and remember the first pancake is never any good anyway.

Goldenbunny · 01/03/2022 20:19

Was it pancake Day? I brought a pancake pan a few weeks back for pancake Day how could I forget it was pancake Day 😂 now I want pancakes but used the eggs to make egg mayo earlier on.

DoobryWhatsit · 01/03/2022 20:19

If you keep telling your little girl that you're useless, she's going to start believing it. Which would be particularly galling considering that it's not true!

If it's only you and her at home then you need to be your own champion, big yourself up a bit. Fake laugh when it all goes tits up and pretend like you don't care.

Ps pancakes work best in a very heavy bottomed pan. I can only cook pancakes at my mums, using her expensive pans- they never work in my own cheapo ones!

PhotiniaEvergreen · 01/03/2022 20:19

You're not an awful mother if you can't cook pancakes. If you do it once a year, you don't have enough practice. I could never understand this only-once-a-year pancake custom. I do them most weekends, with different toppings. My first efforts were often torn and lumpy.
Also pre-made pancake batter is not good. I tried the M&S one, it was so greasy and quite unpleasant.

DC1214 · 01/03/2022 20:23

3 words for next year - electric frying pan

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 01/03/2022 20:24

It’s ok - in a few years she’ll be able to make the pancakes! My 13 yo has been doing them for the last couple of years as I can’t do them either!

restingbitchface30 · 01/03/2022 20:24

Is this real?! Theres a war going on where Ukrainian children are being killed and you are attention seeking with this nonsense?! The way you child reacted to a pancake tells me you spoil your child rotten and need a wake up call ffs. I’m sorry if this is harsh but grow up

Mulhollandmagoo · 01/03/2022 20:25

@EdenFlower

Pancakes are so easy, anyone who can't Make one must be pretty useless! How on earth do manage to get through life if simple tasks prove such a bloody challenge?
Well, you're a twat!
MOR19 · 01/03/2022 20:25

@Bigoldmachine

You’re not as awful as me. I made a lovely batter with DD (nearly 5 yo). Made ahead of time so it wouldn’t be stressful. Chopped up strawberries and found some sprinkles as that was what she wanted on her pancake. Talked her through how to flip it and to be careful only to touch the handle of the pan. Got her to stand with me and both hold the handle. In the one second I looked up at her little brother in his high chair, she grabbed the very end metal bit where the handle meets the pan Sad big blister on her finger, hysterical tears and basically a panic attack ensued. Partly because it was 6pm and she was really tired too. I feel awful. Pancake day will always be the day she burned herself on the pan. We held it under the cold tap for ages and she’s asleep now but oh god I felt bloody awful. Could I not have looked away for that second???!

So you are a much better mother than I am. Also I now hate pancake day.

I did this with my niece a few years ago as she automatically went to hold the hot part…someone gave me a great tip- pop into a cold frying pan once cooked to let the kids have a go at tossing them.
WheekestLink · 01/03/2022 20:26

You're not a bad Mum at all!!

I use the Tesco American style pancake recipe and I'm terrible at pancakes - this works every time.

Write off today and surprise her tomorrow with another go but do it together.

Crystalvas · 01/03/2022 20:26

@mrsbitaly

Not useless at all but I do buy the ready made ones that you can pop in the pan to warm up as a back up
She just said her DD dosn’t like resdy made ones.
Flexitarian · 01/03/2022 20:27

I don’t like pancakes much. I haven’t mentioned it to my kids. They are teenagers, they have the internet, eggs flour and milk in the cupboards.

I’m not a bad mum, just a busy one!

Crystalvas · 01/03/2022 20:29

@PancakeDisaster

DDs just come and gave me a hug and said sorry, says she'll buy me a chocolate bar from the shop on the way to school tomorrow (I didn't teach her that btw).

I've said I understand she was disappointed but I tried. I will get practicing ready for next year.

She just said we should go to Granny's next year (my mum).

Just go with a recipe from online I do that all the time. Recently I made a chocolate cake never done that before, copied the recipe exactly and it turned out ok.
DashDotCom · 01/03/2022 20:30

Someone may already have suggested this as I haven’t read all replies but tip on the mash potato…
baking potatoes, 1 hour (or however long needed to bake them properly) in the oven, cut in half and scoop out the insides, mix with butter and cheese and it’s the easiest lump free mash ever. Don’t even need a masher!

Mulhollandmagoo · 01/03/2022 20:30

@restingbitchface30

You're most definitely the attention seeker here! This is such a awful, and completely unnecessary response.
DomesticatedZombie · 01/03/2022 20:33

I've promised my DD pancakes at the weekend because I just couldn't be arsed doing it tonight. Just go and buy some ready made ones, with squirty cream, bananas, chocolate sauce, etc, and do it at the weekend and make it special.

DomesticatedZombie · 01/03/2022 20:34
  • oh, sorry, I see she doesn't like the ready made ones. Crepe van? Cover anything in enough chocolate sauce and I guarantee she won't notice the difrerence.
Sweetmotherofallthatisholyabov · 01/03/2022 20:35

I am EXCELLENT at pancakes. Can't make a lasagne, and for the longest time I couldn't boil potatoes (soggy and raw at the same time if you can work that one out) the key to my success is an excellent pan and spatula. Dm started making noises this year that the pan isn't flat and I need a new one but I won't hear a word of it. (I did have to let the pancake spatula go though, but have found a trusty replacement)

TheMoth · 01/03/2022 20:37

I got home at 6. Worked until 8, then started pancakes.

They went wrong.

I told everyone I hated pancake day and hated this house and hated doing anything. Blamed dh for buying packet batter instead of letting me make my own.

Slammed a few things, made a new batch of batter watched by silent kids.

Ate pancakes.

Next year, I will do them earlier, before I'm so tired I could cry.
