Somehow my mobile has been added to a list…. Loads of unwanted calls but these fuckers have rung me four times this morning and eventually I’ve answered (by mistake thinking it was school) and when I’ve said I don’t want to receive cold calls the guy said ‘fuck you - go and fuck yourself and your mother can go and fuck herself…..

I’m already on the telephone preference and I will block the number but feel a bit violated - when I googled the number I couldn’t find anything on the company but loads of others have logged it as a harassment call - do I log it with police or is that over egging?

I tell them that my adult son will talk to them, I then tell them he is a police officer. They don't seem to hang around.

Butchyrestingface · 01/03/2022 19:05

Oh dear, an aggressive Weegie. Sad

MeridianB · 01/03/2022 19:12

I used to find those baby books with buttons you can press that make animal noises were ideal for these callers. 🐶🐮🐷🐸
@thesparkthatbled

Why even answer the phone? If a number I don't recognise calls me I don't answer it. If they don't leave a message I block the number. Easy peasy

Not everyone has caller display. I dont, my phone isn’t digital. I need a phone that works in a powercut.
I have a phone that works in a power cut, and has caller display.

I'd expect any ordinary plug-in landline phone to do that.

MrsDThomas · 01/03/2022 20:46

Plug in and electric. Mine isn’t electric and has no caller id

PigletJohn · 01/03/2022 20:59

This isn't the model I've got, but I've got a couple (have two phone lines) something like it, as standby in case I ever get loss of power.

One of them has batteries, the other one has a label on the battery case saying that batteries are not required in UK or EU.

Batteries last a couple of years.

Leftbutcameback · 01/03/2022 21:22

All landlines are being replaced in the next three years anyway. You can still have one but it won't work in a power cut. Traditional landlines are going.

PigletJohn · 01/03/2022 22:17

so either way, MrsDThomas may as well buy a phone with caller id.

MrsDThomas · 01/03/2022 22:20

But i dont need one. I never said i did

trashcanjunkie · 01/03/2022 22:31

Some brilliant suggestions for the next call here! They’ve not rang back yet mind so fingers crossed - I had no idea it was such a thing…

I'm laughing my head off with some of these. We need to turn these into a comedy sketch!
I can't wait until they ring me now

EeeICouldRipATissue · 01/03/2022 23:07

Block.
Don't think the police would do anything about it?
Next time say you're subscribed to TPS and by law they're not allowed to contact you.
They usually can't hang up quick enough!
Don't blow a whistle down the phone like some posters are suggesting.
I used to work in a call centre and that's utter arsehole behaviour.
There's people on the other end, however questionable, and that's a physical assault.

19lottie82 · 01/03/2022 23:25

If I get a call from an odd looking number I don’t recognise, I answer and stay silent. If it’s a spam call then their software is usually programmed to hang up if the person on the other end of the line doesn’t speak. If this happens I then just block the number straight away.

Fiefofum · 01/03/2022 23:32

Tell them you work for the police, HMRC or the Fraud Office and start fishing confidently for their details as if in law enforcement. They soon hang up in a fright. Quite entertaining…

KloppsTeeth · 02/03/2022 00:51

Tom Mabe Murder Scene phone scammer prank always makes me laugh. It’s on YouTube if you want a chuckle.

UnsuitableHat · 02/03/2022 07:32

In my experience these callers hang up as soon as they realise that you’re not going to play ball rather than as a response to anything ‘clever’ you’ve done to wind them up. Perhaps there’s a case for trying to put people off working for dodgy cold calling companies. But we can’t know the situation of the person on the other end. I think the best approaches are the least time consuming: not answering, hanging up, blocking.

WalkingOnTheCracks · 02/03/2022 09:55

I have a similar problem, but at the other end of it, as it were. My number is being used.

I get a call from abroad - Italy and Ireland are frequent - and it rings twice and stops before I answer. Sometimes I get a call a few minutes later from a UK number, and it's always someone saying, "Who are you? You just called me and I missed the call."

All I can do is explain that my number's being hijacked and that they should block me.

Virgin say they can't do anything about it, and I can see their point. Short of me blocking all calls from abroad, there's no real solution other than changing my number.

theyhavenothingbuttheaudacity · 02/03/2022 09:59

I'm laughing so much at 'your husband is a very arsehole'

WalkingOnTheCracks · 02/03/2022 10:00

Incidentally, telling them that you're the police or that you're on a prohibited list might stop that call, but it's unlikely to get you removed from their targets. Once a list of numbers is out there, it's sold all over the place. Also, the person making the call doesn't give a monkey's. They're not going to waste time on whatever's required to remove you from the list. They have another call to make.

This is not a good idea.

It's not just dodgy call centres that use dialler software. Banks, utility companies, lots of other huge firms use it.

I work for a bank. If fraud is detected on your card or if the collections area need to speak to you or if your internet banking access has been suspended (and many others!) , someone in the relevant team will be contacting you through an automatic dialler system - and yes, if the call answer is silent it will disconnect.

You risk missing important calls - dialler systems are common tech and used by many reputable companies.

If the bank detects suspicious activity on my account, then they should freeze it and wait for me to contact them. I'd never trust a phone call claiming to have come from a bank.

If banks, or any other reputable organisation, is fool enough to use "Caller Witheld" then they must recognise and accept that their calls will be treated with grave suspicion.

Omg I’ve remembered a other thing - when I asked for my number to be removed from the list he said he was going to send them to loads of companies Grin - he really lost his shit 😂😂
