Somehow my mobile has been added to a list…. Loads of unwanted calls but these fuckers have rung me four times this morning and eventually I’ve answered (by mistake thinking it was school) and when I’ve said I don’t want to receive cold calls the guy said ‘fuck you - go and fuck yourself and your mother can go and fuck herself…..

I’m already on the telephone preference and I will block the number but feel a bit violated - when I googled the number I couldn’t find anything on the company but loads of others have logged it as a harassment call - do I log it with police or is that over egging?

Thays really crap @trashcanjunkie 😒

For any unknown numbers I answere as though they have got through to a business number , the more obscure I can think of the better and ask for a reference/ account number

Most of the time cold callers will know your name , so by the time they told me my name and told me where they're calling from I'll try and judge whether it's a scam or genuine cold trying to drum up business and earn a living or its a scam .

I won't be rude to genuine people that are trying to earn a living you must be a horrid job to have to do so they get a polite but firm answer , however scams get no patients from me at all.

Hello this is Gas To You compliants, please can I have your reference number and post code

Hello Ferret fanciers and friends please can I have your club number and pets name

I am sorely tempted to pretend to be a phone sex line I'm not sure if I could go through that without laughing 😆

Blogblogblogblog · 01/03/2022 11:54

If it’s the home phone I just leave it on and go and do something else. My thoughts are at least they aren’t bothering someone else then I go back after 10 mins and put the receiver down.
If it’s my mobile I press the end button and swipe to block the number.
Occasionally if they do a long preamble and I am premenstrually annoyed, I just say yes to every answer they give. It sometimes takes a while for them to realise but it can be quite entertaining, especially adding accents.

BestKnitterInScotland · 01/03/2022 11:55

@daimbarsatemydogsbone

It's appalling that our government and phone industry refuses to address this issue.
If the call does not originate in the UK - which it probably doesn't despite looking like it comes from a Glasgow number - the government can do bugger all about it.
jacqui5366 · 01/03/2022 11:56

some great ideas for cold callers here - definitely going to try a couple - the singing one sounds fun

SoberSerena · 01/03/2022 11:57

I like the whistle idea 😂. Or if no whistle available, maybe just a loud scream?

I know I guy who used to try and sell them things. That was quite funny. He'd put them on hold with a radio playing as well.

WizardOfAus · 01/03/2022 11:59

I pass the phone to my 7 year old who rips out his loudest fart noises.

KloppsTeeth · 01/03/2022 12:00

I tell them I’m dead. They apologise and never call again. Obvs, I don’t say “I’m dead” I just say, “she’s dead mate, sorry. I’m just the cleaner”.

irishfarmer · 01/03/2022 12:00

I get tonnes of these. I mostly don't answer anymore, if they don't leave a voicemail I assume it was a scam caller. Block it, the police can't do anything.

VladmirsPoutine · 01/03/2022 12:00

My sister pretends she's close to orgasm with heavy breathing and sighs and tells them to just say a bit more as she's getting close. They usually hang up quite horrified Grin

PigletJohn · 01/03/2022 12:01

the number is probably fake and may belong to some innocent person

you can log the number on www.tellows.co.uk if you want.

block it, as you have done, and try not to answer or engage with scammers

OFCOM will not do anything even if you report it to them.

Heronatemygoldfish · 01/03/2022 12:03

I ask them their name and company. It's amazing how many people put the phone down at that point.
If they actually give it, I tell them I'm going to report them to the TPS. The rest usually hang up then.

Only exception is if they're a microsoft update/phishing type scammer and if I'm not at work. Then I'll play silly buggers as long as I can to stop them scamming someone more vulnerable.

UnsuitableHat · 01/03/2022 12:04

I don’t usually answer calls from unknown numbers - see if they leave a message then block them if not.
An unpleasant experience for you but I agree with the pp who said you probably had a guy at the end of his rope. It’s probably a desperately awful job.

KatherineJaneway · 01/03/2022 12:05

The number could be genuine and just being used by scammers. These scammers spoof numbers and the genuine number can receive
angry calls.

marqueses · 01/03/2022 12:08

@TheMullerLightOwl

One thing that I've found has worked really well is saying "per GDPR I do not consent to you contacting me and you will be breaking the law if you call me again" Haven't had the same people call me again after doing that
How do you know, these kind of spammers change the number that appears on your phone all the time.

I hightly doubt that someone who rings you to try and scan you cares one jot about GDPR if they even know what it is

girafferaffle · 01/03/2022 12:09

Since Google's call screening started in the UK I've been hoping for calls like this so I could try it 😂

jamandmarmaladeoncrumpets · 01/03/2022 12:09

it was most probably Putin: his day's not going well today

Laiste · 01/03/2022 12:11

@KloppsTeeth

I did say i was dead once.

It was a ''We heard you'd been in an accident madam'' one.

I said ''Yes, it was fatal''.

He said ''Oh! ... er ... ''

I said ''Yes. I died''.

He said '' oh ... er ... i'm very sorry ...''

and then HE hung up Grin Result!

All fun and games until the hospital or police try to contact you on a withheld number Grin
Chikapu · 01/03/2022 12:15

What do you think the police would do? Just block and move on.

FanFckingTastic · 01/03/2022 12:15

My husband really enjoys a cold caller :-) He'll tell them he's really happy that they've called and then either proceed to try and sell them something random, or alternatively try to 'convert' them and will tell them all about God. It normally doesn't take long for the cold caller to disappear and gives him a good giggle in the process.

Sparklesocks · 01/03/2022 12:16

As others have pointed out, it might not even be their number, they might be calling from overseas or something and using a spoof number. It might be a scam which is why he swore because he doesn’t represent a reputable company. I get a lot of robot calls, they’re a real pain in the arse. Only thing you can do is block unfortunately as TPS don’t seem to cover dodgy companies.

Yellownightmare · 01/03/2022 12:17

@CoffeeBeansGalore

Say please hold the line. Your call is important. Then leave the phone next to music/annoying radio channel & walk away. Waste their time & money. Block when they've hung up.
I do this. Except I just don't say anything. I can hear them squawking in the background, and then they finally give up and hang up. If we all did this, this approach would soon die out. It only works because people engage and then get sucked in.
Puzzledandpissedoff · 01/03/2022 12:18

Sorry that happened to you OP, but actually I quite like the "Just a 2 minute survey" calls - though obviously not the abuse
I time them, giving regular updates as to how long's left as they read the ridiculous script, and say a cheery "time's up!!" when they've run out

Drives them bananas Grin Grin

JadeSeahorse · 01/03/2022 12:19

If I do mistakenly answer a cold call, I just keep saying, "Hello", "Hello" pretending I can't hear them.
Usually does the trick!

Another one I use is to say the homeowner is away and I'm just the nanny.😄

LilacPaisley · 01/03/2022 12:22

I keep Bridget Jones Diary written in the French language by the phone and read from it in response to everything they say. Neither of us knows what I'm talking about. They soon go away.
