Somehow my mobile has been added to a list…. Loads of unwanted calls but these fuckers have rung me four times this morning and eventually I’ve answered (by mistake thinking it was school) and when I’ve said I don’t want to receive cold calls the guy said ‘fuck you - go and fuck yourself and your mother can go and fuck herself…..

I’m already on the telephone preference and I will block the number but feel a bit violated - when I googled the number I couldn’t find anything on the company but loads of others have logged it as a harassment call - do I log it with police or is that over egging?

OP posts:
ThinWomansBrain · 01/03/2022 15:34

mind you, I did check a number the other day, which came up as being dodgy, but when I checked by email with someone I was trying to touch base with, it was their number.
All getting a bit hard with people WFH and using own phones!

ThinWomansBrain · 01/03/2022 15:37

there was something on R4s money program the other day about fraudsters hijacking legitimate numbers so that the number that displays on your phone isnt the one calling you
Moneybox "Combating crooks faking phone caller IDs" - I think it was near the start.

The gdpr comment won't work they n these scammers. Theyre based in India, they're not bothered by gdpr threats.
Have you recently signed up to something new? Even when you tick the box refusing companies permission to share some of our data is sold on.
I opened a new bank account, three days later these scammy calls started

StrawberrySanta · 01/03/2022 15:49

One time (in my mid 20s!) I said to them "not interested and can you remove my number please" and the guy stammered and said oh sorry you're clearly under 18 I'm not sure how we have your number I will remove you now"
I was gobsmacked, I wasn't pretending to be a child that was my actual voice 😂

BoredZelda · 01/03/2022 16:00

If it’s any comfort it’s probably a guy at the end of his rope..

No comfort at all. If you can’t deal with people being shitty to you on the phone, don’t take a job cold calling them.

Block it and forget it. It’s a Glasgow number and if you look it up on who-called.co.uk it seems you’re not the only one to g by e targeted by these charmers.

OP said she thought it was the school so likely knows it’s a Glasgow number and already said she’d seen people had logged it as suspect.

Coincidence. We get scam phone calls on our landline from time to time, we live in a new build so the number was new 8 years ago when we moved in and it has only ever been given to my mum, my MIL and my sister. None of them are selling data.

curlymom · 01/03/2022 16:10

@VelvetChairGirl

just breath heavily down the phone and dont say anything
So many great suggestions on this thread. Love this one 😂
MrsDThomas · 01/03/2022 16:16

Just play along with them. Infuriates them.

It got one yesterday and today telling me i was owed £250 from my washing machine insurance company. I said I prefer cheques than giving bank details over the phone as there were awful fuckers out there scamming vulnerable people.

He hung up on me. The cheek! Very rude.

Sunshinesky1981 · 01/03/2022 16:42

My plan woukd be answer, then almost immediately interupt them with ' Thank goodness you've called ! Quick George you can play it for him/ her now before bed/ bath/ lunch." I would then to proceed to play a badly preformed recorder version of puff the magic dragon down the phone at them. If they tried to interupt, I would start again from scratch, or possibly move on to Three blind mice

LoveFall · 01/03/2022 16:51

We keep getting the annoying text message saying we overcharged you and click here to get your refund.

Only most of the time they say they are from a company we don't deal with.

Also phone calls. We no longer answer a number we don't recognize or is identified only by a country etc. if they really need to contact us they will leave a message.

My favourite is the one where the disembodied voice takes over your computer saying you have a deadly computer virus and Don't Turn Off Your Computer.

We turn it off.

This thread has made me miss my dog! He was a big gsd and loved to listen when someone was talking on the phone. I used to put him on when my mum rang on a monologue of complaints. She was fine to carry on as she could hear the breathing Grin

Howareyouflower · 01/03/2022 17:29

I've only once felt sorry for a cold caller, and that was when a very nervous English woman phoned (New job, perhaps?) and asked how my day was going. We'd just got back from a hospital appointment, so I said "Well apart from just getting a cancer diagnosis for my husband..." and she got very flustered, said how sorry she was, then blurted out "Well the reason I was calling was to talk to you about our new will writing service". I managed to say we had wills and hang up before howling with laughter with my husband who had heard the whole thing.
At other times I've been told to fuck myself, and my husband, after playing the "old man" card, was told that if he was old, he should just die.
When asked to answer a few questions, I now say my husband does not allow me to do that, and he will get very angry. It's sad but they always seem to accept that as a reasonable reason to refuse.

hellcatspangle · 01/03/2022 17:33

I'm a cold caller, I'm a bit disappointed I don't get anyone squawking like a chicken or having pretend orgasms down the phone at me 😂

Crumbleburntbits · 01/03/2022 17:38

My favourite way to deal with cold callers is to sing opera very loudly to them. I’m not a good singer.

The insurance accident calls are my fun ‘I did have an accident. It’s left me with a condition where I can’t stop singing - ‘’The wheels on the bus go round and round…’’ If they allow me to get to a second verse it’s ‘’The man on the phone goes talk, talk, talk….’’

Some repeat callers have been treated to my squeakiest recorder playing. They never hang on until I get to the end of ‘London’s burning’ Smile

Crumbleburntbits · 01/03/2022 17:41

I’m waving to @Sunshinesky1981. We’ll have to record some duets to stop all the cold callers!

thesparkthatbled · 01/03/2022 17:47

Why even answer the phone? If a number I don't recognise calls me I don't answer it. If they don't leave a message I block the number. Easy peasy!

Ramalamadingdongs · 01/03/2022 17:54

No you can't report cold callers to the police. Hmm

LaQuern · 01/03/2022 18:09

I ask them from what source they obtained my number. They then normally say they'll take me off the list as they're all terrified of GDPR breaches.

hilbil21 · 01/03/2022 18:11

A dodgy scamming number phoned me once and I hung up and he phoned me back to say "f*ck you" Grin

Not everyone has caller display. I dont, my phone isn’t digital. I need a phone that works in a powercut.

Essexgirlupnorth · 01/03/2022 18:19

My husband enjoys winding up these people so will give the phone to him.

My mobile flags up potential scam calls so just don't answers if it is important they will leave a message. If it has the same code as where I love I might answer it.

Look up Mark Rober on YouTube he build a glitter bomb to catch scammers is quite informative as well as good karma when I whole load of glitter explodes in their car.

Some of these clever ideas are cruel.
It’s a person on the other end you know Hmm

Ever considered getting a job where you’re not a nuisance? Hmm
BoredZelda · 01/03/2022 18:30

It’s a person on the other end you know

A person who told OP to go fuck herself. There are different kinds of cold calls. But frankly, if you take any type of job that involves calling and interrupting people’s busy day to sell them shit they don’t want, then you should know what you are getting in to. And no, it’s not the only job some people can get.

PoshHorseyBird · 01/03/2022 18:33

That's just made me snort in my tea, bloody hilarious! 😂😂😂
