Somehow my mobile has been added to a list…. Loads of unwanted calls but these fuckers have rung me four times this morning and eventually I’ve answered (by mistake thinking it was school) and when I’ve said I don’t want to receive cold calls the guy said ‘fuck you - go and fuck yourself and your mother can go and fuck herself…..

I’m already on the telephone preference and I will block the number but feel a bit violated - when I googled the number I couldn’t find anything on the company but loads of others have logged it as a harassment call - do I log it with police or is that over egging?

IIRC someone on a similar thread once said they answered unknown calls with “Police Fraud Squad, can I help you?” Or wtte.

@TheMullerLightOwl

One thing that I've found has worked really well is saying "per GDPR I do not consent to you contacting me and you will be breaking the law if you call me again" Haven't had the same people call me again after doing that
But that doesn't apply to the boiler rooms calling from Asian countries as many are, I usually ask for a prawn curry and a side of naan bread if I've actually answered the phone.

@WellTidy

I had a cold call from someone saying he was with Virgin (we are with Virgin which is why I started to listen) and it then quickly became apparent that he was trying it on. I said something along the lines of ‘it’s my husband who sorts out the broadband and I am pretty sure that he hasn’t asked for this [service you are trying to sell]’ and the guy told me that I was an arsehole and that my husband was a ‘very arsehole indeed’

I had several last week from one about insurance for your washing machine. When I started to say I am not interest he started screaming down the phone to me say shut up, shut up, over and over, I told him to shut up and put phone down. Think they tried again today but did not answer, they are a pain.

@Darley368

I'm impressed by how many of you still have a home landline. I haven't bothered with one for years!
Yeah! Maybe because some of us live in areas where you can't get internet without one.

I'm fully aware that many urban areas don't need a landline. But out here in NotLondon, NotMetropolitanAnywhere, the roll out if communication upgrades just has not happened.

OldPunk · 01/03/2022 13:20

Luckily my phone always says suspected spam with those kind of calls. They usually hang up on me when I tell them I live in a council house! Ignore and block. Sorry you won't through this. Nasty person.

nearlyspringyay · 01/03/2022 13:24

And this is why I never answer a number I don't know. If it's real they will leave a message

Bookworm20 · 01/03/2022 13:29

Not sure if I can post a link but I remember this everytime I get an annoying cold call

if link does not post, search for Tom Mabe murder scene call on youtube.

MintyFreshBreath · 01/03/2022 13:29

I’m quite good at turning on the waterworks. My usual response is ‘This is my mum’s phone, why are you calling? She’s dead. She died last week.’ Interspersed with sobs and sniffing. I managed to make one girl sound very uncomfortable but in my defence the same company had called me multiple times that week and I was fed up. Never heard from them again funnily enough 😆

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 01/03/2022 13:30

I don't answer unknown numbers. If it's genuine and important they'll leave a message.

OnceUponAWhine · 01/03/2022 13:32

That’s awful OP.
I literally don’t answer any calls that aren’t from people in my contacts. If it’s a genuine call/trying to reach you personally they will leave a voicemail. I look up any unknown numbers on ‘who called me’ and if it’s logged as a harassment number, I just block it on my phone. I really don’t get pestered that much anymore, genuinely think never answering my phone helps me drop off some of these dodgy call lists.

Please report it to the ICO, especially if you're on the TPS.

CanadianJohn · 01/03/2022 13:34

My wife usually answers our house phone. If it's a scam-type call, she says "one moment please", and passes the phone to me.

I say "police fraud squad, what's all this about?" The caller always hangs up.

MrsPnut · 01/03/2022 13:36

We have a BT phone with the announce function and so never get spam calls.
My mobile doesn't work when I am at home so I almost never give out my mobile number when signing up for things.

butterflymum · 01/03/2022 13:36

Does your phone provider offer a check and report service?

eg Talk Talk

Leftbutcameback · 01/03/2022 13:36

We had our work numbers cloned /hacked like this. It was horrible as my colleagues were getting angry calls they knew nothing about. We have to have phones on at night too sometimes and people got aggressive calls during the night Angry

ememem84 · 01/03/2022 13:41

I had one a while ago from "HMRC" telling me that i had a court summons and was required to go to the local court immediately as i hadn't paid my HMRC tax for the year.

turns out i knew immediately it was a scam as where i live tax isn't governed by HMRC.

my dad had a message va whatsapp a last week though "hey dad its me my phone's broken so this is my new number, can you transfer me some money please"

he messaged back, and asked who is "me" and got the reply "your oldest!"

i'm the oldest, so he called me at work to find out what had gone on and why had i broken my phone. turns out i hadn't. but he almost fell for it.

the blessing here is that dad doesn't know how to use internet banking. so wouldn't have been able to transfer any money anyway - he would have asked mum to do it. and she would have called me up as he had done and asked why i needed money.....

Waddlegoose · 01/03/2022 13:44

You are missing out on my favourite game! Trying to act like a crazy person and waste their time.

Some of the back stories I make up. I spoke none stop for 5 mins about the car accident I was in when I was drunk and a car knocked me down ruining my favourite tshirt that my uncle had brought me.

They never call again 😂🤣😂

ifIwerenotanandroid · 01/03/2022 13:49

I told one they shouldn't be calling because I'm registered with the Telephone Preference Service, & instead of the usual apology & lie that they'll take my name off their lists & never bother me again, one young woman sarcastically said, " Are you? Well, aren't you the lucky one?" & hung up on me!

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 01/03/2022 13:50

Where it's clearly a scam rather than a cold sales call, I ask the person this question.
"Does your mother know what you do, and would she be proud of you, if she knew that you were defrauding people like her."
It's quite effective.

Branleuse · 01/03/2022 13:51

Its either calling you from glasgow or from a skype account as they use 0141 too

LunaLights · 01/03/2022 13:53

I ask them if their parents are proud of what they do. They hang up quite quickly.

Cantleave · 01/03/2022 13:53

I answered one of these calls, which showed up as from London, told the guy I wasn’t interested and put the phone down, then blocked the number. 30 seconds later I got another call, this one showed as from Glasgow, it was the same guy! Won’t do any good, but I added that number to my blocked list too.
