To think that there's nowhere cheap and cheerful to eat in London , near Hyde Park?

Been looking for some
Ideas where to eat when we travel to the UK from Ireland next month.
We'll be staying near Hyde Park but I'm
Stumped when it comes to finding cheap ish eats ???
Are there any??
We aren't too choosy but like the odd burger and are open to all cuisines but gosh, the prices are nuts from what I can see, online.

Victoria pub just north of the park, near Paddington

Thanks once more. Are there any places of interest in the area that you would recommend ? My partner enjoys military history so was thinking of war museum for him while I flake off to the Tate Modern. We have three full days in London so any suggestions welcome for sight seeing.

Churchill War Rooms, Borough Market

cheapeats · 01/03/2022 11:11

I had a look at Google there for the Borough market. It looks unreal! My idea of heaven, his idea of hell so thanks. I'll go there and he can do the war rooms Smile

So what do I wear around London during The day to evening ? I'm a midi dress, vejas and Denim jacket kinda gal! Will that allow me into galleries / museums and these puns/ restaurants ? Can You guess we haven't left the island in Two years.... Grin
Anything goes! I have lived in London all my life and unless you’re going to some swanky restaurant you can wear what you like. Wear comfortable shoes and bring rain gear.

@Aria999

Brick lane.

It's not super near as it's near Tottenham court road which is the other end of Oxford street but it does a wide range of awesome cheap curry.

Brick Lane is in the east end, Bethnal Green I think is the nearest station

That's great. We are doing London on a budget so like the idea of food markets and picnics. We are staying in an apartment so can have food there too but would like to eat out once per day, preferably I. The evening.

outside of luxury & extreme toutist places, London eats/drinks are cheaper than Ireland, certainly cheaper than Dublin, in my experience.

Pollo on Old Compton Street is one of the longest running cheap[er] central eateries in the very centre of town.

I don't think the place that's currently on that site is, strictly speaking, the same old Pollo from 20+ years ago, but it's still acceptable in the price range.

if your looking for value defo go to Edgware road the far end up past Baker Street tube and the flyover. The Kurdish restaurants are excellent value. You get soup, bread and hummus as soon as you sit down and a huge salad with the kebabs. Don't be put off by the fact they don't look much from the outside and often lots of male only tables.
On left hand side past the petrol garage is a good one but I prefer one on the righthand side just before that looks more like a takeaway (don't know the name might be sulimanyi or erbil) as the tables are all at the back upstairs.

cheapeats · 01/03/2022 11:55

I have no idea how the tube works.. would that just be added stress?

I would head to the foodcourt on the Southbank. Very reasonable, great choice and you can sit inside the Southbank centre to eat.

BlanketsBanned · 01/03/2022 12:03

The tube is quite easy to navigate, you can download it and the different colours tell you which line to take, it might be easier for you to list where you want to visit then plan the journey. What hotel are you in.

cheapeats · 01/03/2022 12:07

We're staying at Hyde park apartments

kew gardens.

From Queensway it's a nice walk through the park to High Street Kensington which has lots of inexpensive places to eat or snack - Wagamama, Dirty Bones, Dishoom (highly recommended), Whole Foods, The Ivy (not as expensive as you might think), Leon, Ole & Steen... There's also an M&S with a big food section.

Chersfrozenface · 01/03/2022 12:17

TfL journey planner will plan a journey for you. tfl.gov.uk/plan-a-journey/

E.g. put the postcode of the place you're staying in the From box and the Imperial War Museum in the To box, then change the date and time to whenever you want to travel.

You can pay with a contactless card, just tap in with it on the big yellow button at the gate and tap out at the other end. (On buses you just tap in, you don't tap out.)

I like to use buses for a good old nosey, but they can be very slow if traffic is heavy, and sometimes get diverted so your route isn't what you expected and you have to get off and re-navigate.

Beketaten · 01/03/2022 12:18

For a picnic, pick something up from Whole Foods or M&S and go to Kensington Gardens (part of Hyde Park near the Palace) or by the Serpentine or the Albert Memorial. Kew Gardens is a fairly long tube journey away, and you'll have to pay for entry.

A behind the scenes tour of the RAH is good.

If you go to the Imperial War Museum one morning, this pub is right nearby and would be great for lunch. The Tankard

We're also going to the Royal Albert Hall for a concert on one of the evenings. Is there a dress code for there ?
There is no dress code for the Royal Albert Hall. DH wears T-shirts and trainers to the Royal Opera, I wear whatever I was wearing to work (usually black trousers and a nice top, or a casual dress). Plenty of people in jeans.

You might choose to dress up a bit because it’s a nice night out and it’s nice to dress up, but if you wear scruffy jeans nobody will give you a second glance. People are there to focus on the stage, not the audience.

Restaurant-wise, some places like the Ivy have a shirt and tie rule for men, but that is the exception not the rule. I never dress up beyond business casual, and have never had any issues or felt under dressed in “naice” restaurants.

Absolutely no dress code for the museums, they are filled with school groups so wear whatever you want.
