To think that there's nowhere cheap and cheerful to eat in London , near Hyde Park?

Been looking for some
Ideas where to eat when we travel to the UK from Ireland next month.
We'll be staying near Hyde Park but I'm
Stumped when it comes to finding cheap ish eats ???
Are there any??
We aren't too choosy but like the odd burger and are open to all cuisines but gosh, the prices are nuts from what I can see, online.

We're also going to the Royal Albert Hall for a concert on one of the evenings.
Is there a dress code for there ?

Um... I can imagine if you go to some named chef restaurant you might go a bit more fashionista but for a bite to eat on the Edgware Road you really, really don't need to think about it...

PermanentTemporary · 28/02/2022 22:48

The Albert Hall is a tiny bit different- I would be a point or two smarter for that, maybe a different jacket and earrings or similar? But there's no dress code unless it says on the ticket.

WorraLiberty · 28/02/2022 22:50

@cheapeats

So what do I wear around London during The day to evening ? I'm a midi dress, vejas and Denim jacket kinda gal! Will that allow me into galleries / museums and these puns/ restaurants ? Can You guess we haven't left the island in Two years.... Grin
You'll see people dressed in anything from office attire, to denim, to really weird and whacky. There's no such thing as a London dress code! Grin

I don't know about the Albert Hall though, if they have one it'll probably be on their website.

GiveUsACoffee · 28/02/2022 22:55

Falafel in Edgware Road is very reasonable

No dress code for RAH. It’s very democratic that way. Some people wear suits, some people wear jeans. I would say however don’t wear flipflops. Apart from possibly on very young Prommers on hot summer evenings, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone in those.
Egghead68 · 28/02/2022 23:06

There are loads of cheap eats on and around Queensway.

You can wear what you want.

gogohm · 28/02/2022 23:14

There's lots of chains with early evening set menus , typically £15 for 2 course approx

Luredbyapomegranate · 28/02/2022 23:32

I’d second Zédels for steak frite, and Edgware Road for Lebanese. Also Google cheap pizza in soho - several good places. There is also affordable and decent Chinese in Chinatown. And affordable decent burgers all over,

If you Google cheap eats London Time Out (magazine) you’ll get lots of hits.

londonmummy1966 · 28/02/2022 23:32

For RAH - no dress code even in the boxes - the pizza restaurant in the Hall is nice and not that expensive. There's also a Franco Manca in South Ken and some burger places that are OK.

There are plenty of inexpensive Lebanese restaurants in the area around Edgeware Road/Paddington. Also the likes of Spaghetti House/Real Greek etc across the West End.

cheapeats · 28/02/2022 23:33

Thanks all. Really
Appreciate this ! I'll
Save for my big trip 😊

Alcohol at the RAH is bloody expensive, take a hip flask Blush

Sashimiandhisthunderpaws · 01/03/2022 00:17

Edgware Rd but go further up, under the flyover. Azmar is good (Kurdish) and very reasonable.

ThinWomansBrain · 01/03/2022 01:12

Pizza Union is great - incredibly thin pizza from around £5
Honest burgers - £10ish for a great burger with rosemary chunky chips
Look out for pre-theatre if you don't mind eating a bit early - the Cote chain usually have a good set menu.
All Bar one usually have good deals - a friend and I love their Tapas Tuesday, I think it's five plates of tapas and your get a free bottle of wine.

ThinWomansBrain · 01/03/2022 01:15

also, look on Groupon for good restaurant deals

Liverbird77 · 01/03/2022 01:20

The Gloucester on Sloane Street is ace for basic pub food.

Aria999 · 01/03/2022 03:59

Brick lane.

It's not super near as it's near Tottenham court road which is the other end of Oxford street but it does a wide range of awesome cheap curry.

I've been to the RAH hundreds of times. I can't think of a time I haven't worn flip flops as it's always a billion degrees in there! Yes 50% of the time it's been at the Proms (whether as a prommer on the floor or in the grand tier boxes). The RAH was always about accessibility for everyone and it's lovely that it's so egalitarian

OP unless you are going to a Michelin starred restaurant or to a chichi Mayfair bar, members club or somesuch then don't expect a dress code anywhere. Jeans are acceptable in most places in London.

Also London is awash with restaurants the vast majority of them extremely affordable. You don't have to eat near your hotel, that's a bit of a boring dead area so gravitate towards Covent garden, south bank, soho to eat. Look at Time Out guides.

Egghead68 · 01/03/2022 05:36

This Syrian place off Queensway looks cheap and very interesting although the setting is very basic: abumaher.business.site/

Brick Lane is nowhere near Tottenham Court Road!

Brick Lane isn't near Tottenham Court Road, it's in the east end but not too far in the tube to Whitechapel.

Drummond Street is behind Euston Station and on the far end of Tottenham Court Road past Warren Street tube. That has a few cheap curry houses but brick Lane has far more.

Alrightqueenie · 01/03/2022 06:00

St Martin in the Fields church which is in between trafalgar Square and charing Cross Station has a cafe in the crypt. It's open from breakfast to dinner and is extremely reasonable.

Alrightqueenie · 01/03/2022 06:04

Jump on the London bus numbers 9, 24 or 11 for a cheap sight seeing trip around London. They go on the same routes as the tourist buses and will only cost £1.50 on your oyster orr debit card.

wurlycurly · 01/03/2022 09:07

London is a very casual town. Dress down rather than up, especially during the day

cheapeats · 01/03/2022 09:09

So many great tips and advice! I'll hold onto it all. Thanks!
