To not understand why people dislike buzz cuts on little boys?

brightmonitorx2 · 28/02/2022 21:23

I did not realise this was a thing until I buzzed my 3 year olds hair in lockdown (had tried and failed to cut it so had to buzz).
My mother hated it, friends made comments. I then googled and people say it's trashy or something 🤷‍♀️
I thought it was cute and he is asking me to do it again because longer hair annoys him.
It was also way easier to bath/dry as he hates hair wash etc.

I want to do it again but so people thing it looks trashy/chavy whatever?

I know I shouldn't care what others think but I do 😬

Oh forgot to add, the other main benefits, he hates the hairdresser so can avoid and it's free and can do it at home!

I don’t love it, it’s a style associated with prison and the army.

Vanellopee · 28/02/2022 21:25

They were banned in our schools for looking ‘thuggish’.

Personally I agree with you though.

Darbs76 · 28/02/2022 21:26

I agree it’s because it looks thuggish - that’s what I’d never cut my son’s hair like that

chaosrabbitland · 28/02/2022 21:27

personally think it does look thuggish lol , and that goes for boys of any age

OfstedOffred · 28/02/2022 21:27

Its associated with needing to cut hair very short to prevent lice. In england at least I would say its associated with poverty as well as the cultural association with skinheads etc.

GeneLovesJezebel · 28/02/2022 21:28

And because they used to cut hair that short to prevent nits.

Woollystockings · 28/02/2022 21:28

I can see it’s practical, but the associations are very thuggish.

hauntedbillybass · 28/02/2022 21:29

I don't like buzz cuts, but I wouldn't say anything to you.

BirdOnTheWire · 28/02/2022 21:29

I think it looks thuggish. But I was a teenager when skinheads were a thing. Buzz cut = violence in those days. When my boys were little they had long floppy hair.
It's the only age when you get to choose what hairstyle they have so make the most of it Grin

FelicityBob · 28/02/2022 21:29

Yep it’s chavvy sorry

OutlookStalking · 28/02/2022 21:29

The association culturally is withnpoorer areas or more thuggish associations. But that could so be considered snobby (like not liking "K" names) as plenty of kids have them.

2ndBorn · 28/02/2022 21:30

We did it to my two sons in lockdown and it was AWFUL. I hated it so much! Yes does remind me of ‘chavs’ sorry but seriously if your son likes it who cares. There are definite benefits.
I would never do that again though Grin

Herald44 · 28/02/2022 21:30

Had exactly the same OP. Buzzed my 3 year olds hair during lockdown because scissor cutting it myself was impossible! He loved it like that. My dad was horrified and tbh I was surprised at the looks we got from friends. It's odd. He's a little boy, not really possible to look 'thuggish' in my opinion! People can have really snobby attitudes about things can't they. It's just hair.

inheritancetrack · 28/02/2022 21:31

It's really chavvy especially with patterns cut into it. At least the only kid I know with it is

MarmiteCoriander · 28/02/2022 21:31

Could you watch youtube videos to cut it yourself into something with a little style, rather than short all over?

I agree, there is an association with the army, prison, shaving heads for head lice and images of children in the holocaust with shaved heads.

Hellocatshome · 28/02/2022 21:31

Well its nice to see how judgemental people are, my son has trichotillomania so his hair has to be cut very short (normally a 2 or 3) but he is very fair so it often looks shorter than it is. I hope he never realises the judgements grown ups are making about him based on his hair.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 28/02/2022 21:32

Personally I think anyone who associates a pre schooler with 'thug' has a problem. He is 3!

MumThatsNotFair · 28/02/2022 21:33

I'd presume they had a bad case of head lice.

LondonWolf · 28/02/2022 21:33

I had to cut my son's hair like that. He has autism and it was the only way to get it all off and delay as long as possible in between the hell that was haircuts. I deeply regret ever cutting it at all. Should have just let him grow it as long as he wanted and not cut it and put him through that Sad but I didn't realise at the time. That's what I think of whenever I see a little boy with a buzz cut. Not thugs or that it looks "thuggish".

IHateWasps · 28/02/2022 21:33

It looks thuggish. It makes me think of This Is England.

LondonWolf · 28/02/2022 21:33

Yes. Pure snobbery.
ChocolateCakeYum · 28/02/2022 21:34

I just don’t like how it looks.

Besides my son has beautiful hair, I like to show it off. Just as well because son prefers it slightly longer anyway.

5128gap · 28/02/2022 21:40

@MumThatsNotFair

Why? It's not 1953. There's treatments these days.
PrimroseTheSmooth · 28/02/2022 21:41

DS16 has a buzz cut, sob. It’s an unforgiving style and comes across as a bit thuggish (DS is the world’s least thuggish boy but unaware of the associations, I think). Ah well, it will grow back.
