To not understand why people dislike buzz cuts on little boys?

brightmonitorx2 · 28/02/2022 21:23

I did not realise this was a thing until I buzzed my 3 year olds hair in lockdown (had tried and failed to cut it so had to buzz).
My mother hated it, friends made comments. I then googled and people say it's trashy or something 🤷‍♀️
I thought it was cute and he is asking me to do it again because longer hair annoys him.
It was also way easier to bath/dry as he hates hair wash etc.

I want to do it again but so people thing it looks trashy/chavy whatever?

I know I shouldn't care what others think but I do 😬

I remember being told by xmil to shave eldest ds head when he had nits. I asked if I should shave dd’s too (both had them).

SpaceFarce · 28/02/2022 22:04

Awful, awful. Reminds me of the military or prisoners. It’s not that hard to cut hair, a YouTube tutorial and a pair of scissors from Boots and most people could make a better fist of it than the effect you get from a clipper.

Beseen22 · 28/02/2022 22:06

I think I'm alone within my current circles but I like my boys hair to be a shaved on the sides and cut short on the top. I'm not a big fan of them with longer hair.

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 28/02/2022 22:07

It’s associated with prison inmates and with “skinheads” and the National Front. My personal opinion, shared by many others, is that it is a horrible haircut that does nothing at all for any little boy. I was going to say, but that is just an opinion and if you and your son like it that’s all that matters. But seeing as you do mind what people think, then you are probably best choosing a new hairstyle. I don’t think the large number of people who dislike a buzz cut are likely ever to be converted.

Ozanj · 28/02/2022 22:08

It’s lazy in my opinion. Especially when it tends to be the parents with lovely hairstyles who buzzcut their sons.

CareBear50 · 28/02/2022 22:10

It looks chavy

But I'd never tell someone that in real life

LondonWolf · 28/02/2022 22:11

There really are some unkind people on this thread. To look at small boys and have these judgmental thoughts about them for having hair cuts adults chose for them. Honestly I can't understand it, it wouldn't even occur to me to think like that.

XelaM · 28/02/2022 22:13

It's the "Peaky Blinders" gangster look Grin

SmellyOldOwls · 28/02/2022 22:13

Short, neat haircuts look far nicer than straggly long hair on little boys IMO, but mumsnet is full of boys with 'long gorgeous curls'

phoenixrosehere · 28/02/2022 22:13

I’ve learned to ignore people who comment on my sons’ hair. They have beautiful, curly hair that grows very quickly. They get the assumption of being girls but it doesn’t bother me and tbh, they’ve been assumed as girls since they were babies when their hair was bone straight.

The oldest is autistic and the youngest is not but both do not like having their hair cut and flee from the sound of a razor. I’m not putting all of us through that for the sake of vanity and what people deem as “acceptable” for little boys. I do a quick trim on both every few months after I’ve washed, detangled, and let their hair dry if it is in their way and to get rid of the dead ends. Both like the feeling of the tangle teaser on their scalp and doing their hair takes about 5 minutes start to finish.

People are going to judge regardless. It can’t be too long, it can’t be too short, it has to look this way or that way. As long as the children are happy and healthy, what does it matter?

XelaM · 28/02/2022 22:13

But actually I don't mind them at all. I think many look quite good with them

ImAvingOops · 28/02/2022 22:14

My sons had buzz cuts when they were little. They hated having their hair washed so this was easier to keep clean. Also a child in one of their classes had lice and a parent who refused to fix it - even the teacher caught it! It was much easier to deal with nits with buzz cuts. My children didn't have any strong opinions about their hair and until they started to express preferences this was easy for me.
I don't care if other people thought it was chavvy or thuggish. People who judge children's haircuts are not people whose opinions I should care about!

What is an acceptable hair cut for boys then? Mine have short back and sides (shaved number 2) and spikey on top (6 and 9)

Valhalla17 · 28/02/2022 22:14

Men have*

My son has two crowns and a cowlick at the front. His hair is very thick and shaving most of it off was the only way to, keep it under control.

Some comments on here are disgusting. I was under the impression that these days people can have their hair how they like and dress how they like but obviously this doesn’t apply to young boys.

Well I would go for the one the woman in this thread was hoping for, the first 2 pictures in www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4481991-To-expect-a-barber-to-be-able-to-cut-my-sons-hair-like-this.

Lots of people said it looked messy, I think it looks like a lovely cut on a young boy. If mine would tolerate scissors he would have it like that.

@DappledThings I think that looks scruffy? Most of the boys in my kids school have hair like my sons.

Makes them look like a mini prisoner. Not a good look.

Avocadobacardi · 28/02/2022 22:24

Mine never had buzz cuts but I kept both of their hair really short all over. They looked gorgeous and we never had any hair hassle. I really dislike long hair on little boys so for me, short back and sides all they way.

LondonQueen · 28/02/2022 22:24

@Vanellopee

They were banned in our schools for looking ‘thuggish’.

Personally I agree with you though.

Both mine and my DC's school ban them tooGrin
