Where would you flee to if war came to us ?

Sorry really not wanting to sound alarmist. But just pondering on the thought of which country we could seek refuge in, should the worst happen?

Our European neighbours would be out, as they'll have their own issues.

So where could we go ? Interesting to think about with all that's going on and how the general public view refugees...

Well if war got this far, then we're buggered, but I would be the one making Molotov cocktails and lobbing them out of windows at the bastards.

rhowton · 28/02/2022 09:56

I imagine that if the UK was invaded, something had gone VERY wrong and there wouldnt be many places for us to easily go. For someone to get to us, they would have had to go through Western Europe (most likely) so we would already be at war. An attack from the East would be tricky due to the ocean.

RachaelN · 28/02/2022 10:24

@MushroomCat

The Scottish islands? Grin we wouldn't be able to go anywhere if it was full scale world war 3, they'd need to go through Ukraine and the neighbouring countries to get to us.
Where do you think Britain's nuclear weapons are kept? Scotland. Also the majority of military aircraft. Not as safe as you think.
THisbackwithavengeance · 28/02/2022 10:28

I wouldn't flee. I'd stay and join the Resistance.

bridgetreilly · 28/02/2022 10:41

I would make super early contingencies and get out.

In that case, you need to leave now, and go somewhere far enough away not to be affected by a nuclear strike. I am not saying we will definitely get one but if we did, it would not be coming out of the blue.

AdoraBell · 28/02/2022 10:45

ancientgran they are stopping all men regardless of nationality from leaving. Must be bloody terrifying- students trying to flee a war zone and told to stand and fight. I do understand that Ukraine needs as many boots on the ground as possible though.

Yeah that's what I have actually said upthread.

Can't work out where the best place to go would be.

Caribbean perhaps ?

We've haven't been invaded since 1066.

Wales was invaded by the French in 1797 but the French were defeated at the Battle of Fishguard.

cdba88 · 28/02/2022 11:02

My mum and dads, they live in the middle of nowhere.

However they do live near an airbase so maybe not!? I feel I'd probably be safer there than where I live

MorningStarling · 28/02/2022 11:14

I don't think there would be anywhere to flee to if the war reached here. To be honest if war comes here it will be in the form of nuclear weapons so fleeing will not be an option. The idea that Russia would stage a conventional war spreading west across Europe is unrealistic. They'd either get stopped by NATO forces before they reached us or they'd be firing nuclear weapons against us.

We're not equipped for war anyway. Unless the government have a massive stash of firearms hidden away to hand out to citizens we won't be able to mount an effective resistance. Almost nobody in this country has access to a firearm. OK makeshift weapons like petrol bombs could be manufactured for a short period but the petrol would soon dry up, and they're not effective on their own against a properly-armed invader.

MorningStarling · 28/02/2022 11:17

I should add, I don't mean that to sound defeatist, I just don't see the government having the balls to properly arm our citizens in advance of an invasion. Guns are simple to learn to use, but it requires a dramatic change of mindset to a) issue them and b) persuade people to use them.

People in this country are overwhelmingly anti-gun for the most part. They think of guns as a bad thing, only used for bad reasons. A gun is a tool, a tool that can be used to kill. But that's the same with many tools, a car or a knife can be used to kill.

diamondpony80 · 28/02/2022 11:28

I'd move out of the city I suppose and move close to my parents who live in a rural area. Other than that, I don't really know.

What a silly comment. Killing is the gun's only purpose, unlike a car or a spanner.
Underpaidsnackbitch · 28/02/2022 14:06

We live in a city with a significant military presence so would likely flee to parents house which is in a semi rural location. It's not very far away but probably slightly safer to where we are now if the worst was to happen

jamandmarmaladeoncrumpets · 28/02/2022 14:08

please stop fleeing and panicking.

Besides if he pushes the button we're all toast anyway.

riceuten · 28/02/2022 14:48

Nowhere that would not already have been attacked. Most people don't have a choice

MiracleBaby2022 · 28/02/2022 15:03

@Yespresh

We’d go to the caravan. Hopefully Putin wont find us as the Tesco delivery man couldn’t Grin
😂
Mirw · 28/02/2022 15:19

Why would any country take any of us in? Bit arrogant... And Scotland is not an option as we are actually part of GB so we would be affected too! We chose to leave the EU. And only those with money will get into Australia, Canada and New Zealand. So unless you have £500k per person, you are onto buttons!!

housemaus · 28/02/2022 15:46

We (are about to) live in an area very unlikely to be targeted by any aerial or ground fighting, so I'd be safer there for longer with my cats unless nukes got involved (and even then, a long way from any primary targets, so possibly slightly more safe than someone in a city).

If that wasn't the case... well, I don't know.

I suppose if we saw warning signs early enough we'd probably try and fly somewhere we could afford to stay for a while (SE Asia I guess?), but that seems very unlikely in time to make a flight somewhere with millions of others doing the same, and that's based on these countries allowing us in. We're lucky in that if it seemed genuinely worrying we haven't got much stopping us just getting out of the country within a few hours, but we'd have to decide to go well before we were unable to fly out of the country due to fighting, so not likely in reality.

Otherwise... there's nowhere we (personally) could go, realistically. Only relatives are in other NATO countries in capital cities, so they're out. Our nearest geographical options would either likely be involved, and the further away countries that were 'safe' would be difficult to get to just because of the fact we're an island and the sheer number of migrants there would be.

RincewindsHat · 28/02/2022 16:32

I wouldn't go anywhere, the choices would realistically be drive to Wales or Scotland, or ferry to Ireland. I would not fly anywhere as there's no way I would leave my dogs to fend for themselves.

I realised this week that although I live relatively in the middle of nowhere, there is a naval base 10 minutes down the road one way and a large military vehicle manufacturer 15 minutes the other way so I'm probably actually very near a target zone for missile strikes as an enemies with missiles would want to take both of those out. Kind of wish that had not occurred to me, to be honest.

Tigersonvaseline · 28/02/2022 16:42

O don't know.
I'd like to think America but the gun's terrify me.
Perhaps Canada?

Bromse · 28/02/2022 16:46

I'm 72 so would stay put.

waitingpatientlyforspring · 28/02/2022 17:24

I wouldn't, I would stay and fight. I only have my mum is Australia but that's not a country we can get to easily from England.

ABitOfAShitShow · 28/02/2022 17:47

This made me laugh out loud!

Mybumlooksbig · 28/02/2022 18:24

No money. No car. No passport.

I'm holing up with champagne, carbs and my kids.
