Where would you flee to if war came to us ?

Sorry really not wanting to sound alarmist. But just pondering on the thought of which country we could seek refuge in, should the worst happen?

Our European neighbours would be out, as they'll have their own issues.

So where could we go ? Interesting to think about with all that's going on and how the general public view refugees...

@Libraryghost

Menopausal woman here too. I am desperate to hit some bastard with a cast iron pan. Maybe the menopausal woman's army is not a bad idea. Not Dads army- the hormonal army.
I love this!!! Grin

By contrast I am dismayed that the majority on here would run and save themselves. If Russia did to the UK what they're doing to Ukraine, we would already be under Russian rule with this bunch of runaways.

ancientgran · 27/02/2022 20:05

Ukraine isn't an EU member state either. But when there is a war on countries start taking in refugees anyway. Yes like our open door and welcoming attitude to refugees. Why would anyone feel the need to take us in.

NippyWoowoo · 27/02/2022 20:06

I have dual citizenship so suppose I'd go back to my home country. Don't know though really, haven't lived there for over 10 years.

Abhannmor · 27/02/2022 20:11

Ryanair might still be flying. But you'd have to pay for the air fuel - and probably pilot the thing yourself. This is Michael O Leary we're talking about!

Isaidnomorecrisps · 27/02/2022 20:12

We’d go back to my family in Wales. Or my other half is buying somewhere in rural
Kent so we’d go there. Depends on how bad it is.
Another country - Canada wins hands down. I was married to a Canadian and it’s the best country, great people, chilled. Would move there now if didn’t have responsibilities here.

popmimiboo · 27/02/2022 20:13

What ? I didn't know we had done that ! I have heard on the news that some countries were removing visa requirements for Ukrainians

I'm in France. There are many English speaking Ukrainians stuck at the Gare du Nord, unable to pass British border control to get the Eurostar to London. Anyone with a spare room is being asked to take people in if possible but those who don't speak a word of French or have family or connections in England, would obviously rather be in the UK.

oopsIdiditagaintoo · 27/02/2022 20:16

@Seahorsemama

To our Irish holiday home. Trouble is being an island no one can just drive out of Britain to another country for safety- unless you are in Northern Ireland.
I have access to a small boat near the English NW coast. If DD and I can come and stay, we'll sail you there 😁
Libraryghost · 27/02/2022 20:23

@HundredMilesAnHour it's embarrassing what a lack of backbone and brains some people have. Like airports will be open for anyone to flee anywhere.. they will be under the control of the army and commercial flights will be grounded. I somehow doubt airport staff will be turning up to work as normal, shock horror but maybe they have families too! Roads will be gridlocked. Nobody is going anywhere but the good news is - we are NOT at war Mumsnet!

danascully96 · 27/02/2022 20:23

A scientific expedition in Antarctica sounds like a safe choice, but I’d probably be one of the masses who died in a flash of fury under their attack, left faceless and unremembered.

I desperately hope we’re not repeating another Cold War with threats of nuclear annihilation looming over us once again ☢️

jamdonut · 27/02/2022 20:43

I don’t have a passport… ( never had a full one before , only a British Visitor’s one, back in the 70’s/80’s) .
Do you think it would be a good idea to get one sorted??????

DoorWasAJar · 27/02/2022 20:49

Pitcairn? Or Bali would be lovely. I’m moving to Shetland from Cornwall soon. I could go to Transylvania, South Africa, Botswana. Romania and other neighbouring countries are accepting refugees from Ukraine.

DomesticatedZombie · 27/02/2022 20:53

It would hypothetically be interesting to see how the UK's 'hostile environment' policy would impact on our citizens' reception abroad were we to find ourselves in the position so many do on arrival here.

RosesAndHellebores · 27/02/2022 20:55

My grandfather left Russia in 1917; my father left Germany in 1938.

They always said it was essential to have your papers (passport) in order at all times, some gold/small pieces of jewellery and cash.

Zilla1 · 27/02/2022 21:03

Would the hormonal (menopausal) army be the next iteration of the sacred band of Thebes. Tough as nails, provided it wasn't a hot day.

Zilla1 · 27/02/2022 21:04

I think tech billionaires destinations of choice are either Hawaii or New Zealand.

anon666 · 27/02/2022 21:07

Crikey, what makes you think a ground war in the UK is likely? Or is this the nuclear threat?

AngelinaFibres · 27/02/2022 21:18

Well there would be no point going to Europe since they have presumably marched all the way across it to get to the channel so they are already where you are going. I'd like to think that, as another menopausal woman, I would be so bloody angry i would stay and fight. I dare say once you've shot the first one it isn't so hard after that. I used to be quite good at shooting toy soldiers with an air rifle. Just the same, but a bigger target.

AngelinaFibres · 27/02/2022 21:20

Hot day would feed the rage and add to our powers

Good idea anyway regardless of the actions of short ,balding psychopathic Russian leaders
AngelinaFibres · 27/02/2022 21:25

@LoisLane66

A friend has a helicopter so I'll be sure to keep on good terms...just in case 😂
They don't glide very well when a missile has sheared the tail off though. Could you make friends with someone with a plane fairly quickly.
Bertiebiscuit · 27/02/2022 21:25

I'd stay exactly where I am

AngelinaFibres · 27/02/2022 21:29
@lightand

You might as well ‘go by’ the hungry caterpillar as by the bible. Both fictional books of nonsense
Or 'we're going on a bear hunt'. Good survival advice in thereSmileSmile

@MrsLargeEmbodied

oh i said scotland because i have relatives there!
The Russians won't go to Scotland because its very cold this time of year.....oh....wait ConfusedConfused
VK456 · 27/02/2022 21:37

Not got the means or the money to do anything but stay put.

Lifewithasixyearold · 27/02/2022 21:40

We would fight. We can’t go anywhere as we’ve both got elderly relatives & my brother is also dependent on us .
We talked about this today, my 12 year old would fight, she’d watched the news & seen the piece about making Molotov cocktails, she calmly stated that she was brave enough & would fight.
I’m proud, but really heartbroken that my small girl has to even have these thoughts.
Going back to options - if you are really intent on going somewhere then go now, whilst it is easy & you can move your money. If this escalates it will do so quickly & all of NATO will have to fight. There will be no flights, no boats, no electronic banking & possibly/probably no internet/mobile phones. Modern warfare will freeze a nation economically before people die in fighting.
