Sorry really not wanting to sound alarmist. But just pondering on the thought of which country we could seek refuge in, should the worst happen?

Our European neighbours would be out, as they'll have their own issues.

So where could we go ? Interesting to think about with all that's going on and how the general public view refugees...

South Africa. I emailed the consulate today to work out how to get DD registered for citizenship (I was born there and hold dual nationality), DH could obviously have a spousal visa if needed but I'm not sure if step children can have a relative's visa and we wouldn't leave without DSS (he lives with us). I mean it's not likely to be necessary but it's good to have an exit plan always

FortunesFave · 26/02/2022 23:16

I live in Australia, we'd head for the bush. There are plenty of places to go which are so remote nobody would find us easily. We also have the wherewithal to hunt and gather native foods. Not ideal of course....I don't want to eat weird tasting berries and roo all the time but that's what it would be!

Swear · 26/02/2022 23:17

I think that we live in a cowardly country. People here generally do absolutely nothing about anything. I suspect that most people would bend over themselves to comply with whatever the Russians told them to do. There's be lots of toadying up to the Russians.

elephantoverthehill · 26/02/2022 23:18

As I understand it Putin wants the Ukraine back under Russia through a need to rebuild the USSR and his personal attachment to Ukraine. However it is more likely, I think, that he is after the mineral reserves. Nuclear war could perhaps happen but what is the point of destroying a country/ continent if it you cannot enter to extract the mineral resources or use it to produce food? We will stay where we are on a small island on the south coast of England.

Swear · 26/02/2022 23:19

Honestly, if the Russians invaded tomorrow the Tories would be inviting them round to dinner.

I agree!!

I’d lock my kids in the local school with all the other kids, give them, the key and I’d arm myself and me and my husband would take out as many of those fuckers as we could with my FIL’s shotguns. We live v rurally so most people shoot.

Absolutely no way I’m running. What’s the point? I don’t want to live in a tent in the freezing cold with little food and no quality of life for years. I’d rather go down fighting.

Frollop · 26/02/2022 23:25

I would be scared and my family would want us to flee or hide but after watching the news I would like to help the fighters with supplies, help the injured...etc as I don't think I would be good at fighting but if they are could find me a role I may be good at I would want to stay and help. If I could be trained to attack and was effective and was brave enough I would do that. I've surprised myself in my thought process, I just hope I would be effective and have the courage to do it.

Why is USA the safest place? Alaska is less than 60 miles from Russia.

Ok, I believe you.

thefatpotato · 26/02/2022 23:33

Kids and I Australian so we'd go there. Hopefully we'd be able to get on a flight and get DH out with us. But obvs impossible if there are no flights.

It's been something which has crossed my mind the last few days.

StuntEgg · 26/02/2022 23:33

Having pondered this from time to time, I'd have no option but to stay put in my small rural town. Have no passport and no family apart from two sons both at university, who'd likely come home to me. Also have pets that I could never abandon, so I guess we'd just barricade ourselves in and live off the Brexit stockpile.

RaininSummer · 26/02/2022 23:36

I don't think running away is the answer but I don't have young children to protect. I would want to join the menopausal resistance but would doubtless be wiped out quickly when Devonport dockyard goes up.

hilbil21 · 26/02/2022 23:37

The Scotland answers crack me up .... we literally house the U.K. stock of nuclear weapons (I live a few miles away) why the hell would anyone choose to come up here lol.

HeadNorth · 26/02/2022 23:37

I’m Scottish, if we were invaded I would want my daughters to get out but I would pick up a gun and fight for my country alongside my husband. This is my home and I would be prepared to defend it with my life.

Nat94 · 26/02/2022 23:37

Nowhere. We are one of the safest countries in the world. If it came to a stage where war came to Britain then as far as I'm concerned nowhere is safe.

FloatOnBytheStorms · 26/02/2022 23:38

I was thinking about this tonight...Australia?

Sometimeswinning · 26/02/2022 23:38

I don’t think it’s cowardly to flee. I think it’s fucking brave to be honest

It really isn't in this situation. Its cowardly.

Oooh is that a bluff or a double bluff?

Livelovebehappy · 26/02/2022 23:43

There won’t be on the ground fighting. It would be nuclear missiles. And to be honest I wouldn’t be looking for a bunker. Who would want to live out their remaining years in an underground bunker? You couldn’t come above ground for years. And no-one will be going anywhere. We’d probably get very little notice, and certainly not enough to plan an escape route out of country.

alltheapples · 26/02/2022 23:47

People here are naive. If this happens the airports will be bombed and you will not be able to fly out.

mobear · 26/02/2022 23:51

Australia, as I have dual citizenship.

flyingant · 26/02/2022 23:56

@LauriePartridge4Eva I won't flee. I will stay and fight.

Does this mean you are in the army? Or do you mean you would join the army?

Itawapuddytat · 27/02/2022 00:06

I've got dual nationality so in theory I could go anywhere in EU. But I'd rather stay here where I am, in Scotland

RightOnTheEdge · 27/02/2022 00:06

In this hypothetical world I might try Brazil. My ex and dcs' dad is from there and all his family are there.
Would they let us in? Brazil doesn't seem to get involved in any trouble that I know of. Their president is also a loony though.

In the real world I can't afford to pay for my kids to have passports so definitely wouldn't be able to buy plane tickets for Brazil. So we'd be staying put. We live in a quite rural market town but have got a few army camps and air fields around us. I don't know if that makes us safe-ish or a massive target.
