@Classica

Why do boring people have to wangle mention of RG universities into every thread?
Grin
thanktor · 26/02/2022 15:13

My children not even close to university age and neither, shall we say, are especially academic! Grin

thanktor · 26/02/2022 15:15

But If they were to…

Id be a touch Hmm seeing a unit studying the rise and fall of the captain Tom charity!

Yeahthat · 26/02/2022 15:22

@bellac11

Oh you were against it before it was cool. Aren't you so wise.

Stunning analysis that the problems this country is facing can be traced back to an old man walking around his garden for charity.

Classica · 26/02/2022 15:29

I'm assuming you haven't been to university.

Case studies are very much part of an MBA curriculum. Even in RG universities.

thanktor · 26/02/2022 15:45

I have a lot to learn from you @Classica

No, it isn’t as simple as that, any more than saying that Jimmy Savile was a celebrity who molested a few girls.

It’s about what happens when a personality becomes a cult and makes a lot of money on the back of that cult. Look at people insisting Tom Moore is a nice man and they don’t really know the first thing about him.

That’s almost always dangerous - see aforementioned Jimmy Saville, or Camila Batmanghelidjh.

VelvetChairGirl · 26/02/2022 15:50

I was clap-shamed by my neighbour for refusing to go out and act like a performing seal.

did you ask them what it achieved? if they actually wanted to help the NHS they could have used their hands to order a pizza and have it delivered to the local hospital.

Johnny Rotten warned about Saville no one listened because he didnt look right did he or sang the praises of the establishment thus he must be a wrong'un.

how many times are people ignored because they dont match the view of being perfect themselves or because the person they are talking about is rich, wears a sharp suit or runs around doing stuff for charity.

Kin hell. Who on earth do some (virtue-signalling, herd-minded, empty-headed wankers) think they are?

Oh I would have relished this happening to me!

DinnoWoman · 26/02/2022 16:06

I got shouted at for not clapping by a couple of pissed up gammons driving past, carlings in hands, presumably on their way to support the NHS by being in a drink driving accident.

I dont know why you're sneering, I dont regard anything as 'cool', mainly because Im a grown up.

Yes the country is in the mess its in because of misguided sentiment (particularly anything war related), a need to jump on bandwagons, lack of critical thought, lack of analysis and being shouted down in the same way you are doing to me now. I didnt reduce it to 'an old man walking round his garden for charity' so dont put words into my mouth

DinnoWoman · 26/02/2022 16:14

It started in 1997 fwiw. Or at least went mainstream then.

You see it everywhere. Considered analysis ditched for lived experience. Experts ridiculed by politicians. Noise and surface glossing over examination and questioning.

Ofc this suits people with power and influence very well because we're not really watching them closely. And if we start to, all they need do is emote.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 26/02/2022 16:24

a watchdog probes the charity - i bet it means nothing
i hope the accounts are in order

indeed, horrible thread, awful posters

Puzzledandpissedoff · 26/02/2022 16:41

Does anyone else think ‘no wonder I’m so cynical’ when stuff like this happens

I find it helps to remember all those of us who just get on with helping out quietly, without fuss and certainly without a media team

As a rule of thumb, I've often found that the more razmatazz there is around a "cause", and the less actual effort at the heart of it, the more likely it is to all go wrong

Viviennemary · 26/02/2022 16:44

Empower their own bank accoints most likely. What a shame this nice old soldier who tried has been let down by those money grabbers.

CharlotteTuesday · 26/02/2022 16:52

I'd like to know if the Azalia Cain foundation is being as robustly investigated. There is some very iffy practices going on there

Mybestyear · 26/02/2022 16:58

I don’t understand the “I’m sure he was lovely” comments. How do you know? Maybe he was, maybe he wasn’t. I do remember at the time noticing the sheer size of the garden and wondering if it would have taken off as much if he’d been less well off and walking around a tiny square of grass in a row of terraced house gardens.

Theluggage15 · 26/02/2022 17:12

Oh please MrsLarge. It’s that ridiculous nothing to see here, be kind, attitude that lets people get away with crap. Sometimes it’s just dodgy money grabbing , sometimes it’s much worse.

Butwhereareyou · 26/02/2022 17:13

Why awful, @MrsLargeEmbodied? Because he’s a really nice man?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 26/02/2022 17:16

NHs staff probably got given a badge

MrsLargeEmbodied · 26/02/2022 17:17

I work for the nhs it was cringey and went on far too long

And the Daily Mail are the bad guys, while Captain Tom, the Guardian and the NHS are in the white corner, right?

Except Stephen Lawrence, of course.
