Do people use their hoover in the kitchen??

I had always not, as my mum doesnt. She says that you dont want food inside the hoover.

I've told dp off when hes suggested hoovering the kitchen, and got out the old brush instead.

But after seeing a video on facebook of someone hoovering their kitchen i wonder if its me thats strange? We eat in the living room so when i hoover in there, there are food crumbs so i suppose my argument is gone...

Mumsnet consenus, do you hoover the kitchen??

YABU - of course you hoover in the kitchen
YANBU - no way, you have to use a brush for the kitchen floor!

Yep! Hoover and Eufy (I have a 3 year old) crumbs galore!

LittleBearPad · 24/02/2022 08:13

How much food do you have on the floor - crumbs only surely otherwise you wipe it up.

Definitely hoover the kitchen.

FolornLawn · 24/02/2022 08:14

Oh lord, yes. I’m a fearless hooverer. I’d probably draw the line at a full rasher, but otherwise if it’s on the floor it’s fair game.

Ifailed · 24/02/2022 08:17

how do you distinguish between food and non food particles in the rest of the house?

Daisydoesnt · 24/02/2022 08:17

Crikey OP I think that's bonkers. How much food did your mum used to have on the kitchen floor?!! Of course you vacuum, but if it's something wet & squishy on the floor surely you just pick it up with some kitchen towel and bung it in the bin?

It reminds me my parents always had this rule that you should never wash up the teapot, because you would never be able to get the suds of fairy liquid out of it. Isn't that bonkers too?!

Littlemissprosecco · 24/02/2022 08:17

Have never not hoovered the kitchen!!

ghostmouse · 24/02/2022 08:19

Always hoovered the kitchen. I don’t even own a broom

Aprilx · 24/02/2022 08:20

Yes of course I vacuum in the kitchen, there is a different setting for hard floors versus carpet on my vacuum cleaner. I do not have dropped food on the floor, just perhaps crumbs, particles, human skin cells, same as everywhere else in the house.

LubaLuca · 24/02/2022 08:20

I've also always hoovered the kitchen as well.

FlasherMcGruff · 24/02/2022 08:20

Of course. You Hoover, and then the Hoover either has caddy area or Hoover bags that get emptied at some point. The food doesn’t stay in the Hoover forever.

Our eufy and handheld battery shark have small dust areas so get emptied every few days max. The larger Miele has bags that obviously fill and get emptied every few months

ODFOx · 24/02/2022 08:31

I'm with you OP. I sweep and mop the kitchen.

TheLadySif · 24/02/2022 08:36

I hoover the kitchen every couple of days. Don't have to worry about food though as I have a dog. She is much more efficient than a hoover.

PureBlackVoid · 24/02/2022 08:40

I have a rubber broom I use in the kitchen almost daily, it’s great at picking up most bits (better than the Shark did) and slim enough to get into the corners. I do still hoover it when I do the rest of the house though.

ohhooh · 24/02/2022 08:41

Always hoover the kitchen - not wet food though! Hoover, the mop. There's all sorts of uglies in your carpets / bathrooms / hallways that you're hoovering up. I also clean my hoover too (wash filters / clean compartments) so I'm not sure what your mums worry is! Could it be based on older hoovers? You can get wet and dry ones now (I'm tempted) so technology has probably moved on!

SGChome20 · 24/02/2022 08:42

I don't use the hoover downstairs in my house at all as it's all hardwood flooring. I sweep and mop only.

Riseholme · 24/02/2022 08:45

Yes. I hoover any floor surface.
We have a very fluffy dog so sweeping would just send hairs into the air.
As above clean wet stuff up with kitchen roll if I get to it before the dog.

Ricksteinsfishwife · 24/02/2022 08:47

How much food is laying around on your kitchen floor then?

Yes, it’s normal to hoover the kitchen but if you’ve food openly Laying around rhen a quick sweep first.

ChatterMonkey · 24/02/2022 08:47

Oh my goodness im shocked at the replies!! 😂😂

It's amazing the things you think are normal because your parents do it, and dont realise until you are an adult that they are strange...

Makes my life a lot easier if I can whip the hoover round instead of the crappy broom me have!

Theres never masses of food on the floor, just crumbs, maybe a strand of grated chese etc that I cant be bothered to pick up while cooking. But yes hoover gets emptied regularly..

Still a bit in shock about this weird belief ive had for 30+ years!

And to the pp above, same about the teapor and soap suds... I remember getting told off for washing the teapot along with the dishes. I think my mum actually bought a new one...

I always hoover the kitchen. I thought majority of vacuums had that setting now. It’s easier than sweeping it up which feels like you’re just spreading it around and never really get it all fully up without several tries with the dustpan.

ukborn · 24/02/2022 08:51

Uh yes. I hoover before I wash it, otherwise you are just pushing stuff around!

A580Hojas · 24/02/2022 08:51

Yanbu. I hate hoovering hard surfaces. Mine is wood and I use a silicon broom and dust pan and brush.

phoenixrosehere · 24/02/2022 08:52

It reminds me my parents always had this rule that you should never wash up the teapot, because you would never be able to get the suds of fairy liquid out of it. Isn't that bonkers too?!

Wow. I clean the kettle once a week. I couldn’t not rinse a teapot. How much fairy liquid were they using and did they not believe in rinsing?

Pebble3 · 24/02/2022 08:55

We definitely hoover the kitchen

ApolloandDaphne · 24/02/2022 08:55

I hoover the kitchen more than any other room in my house as the dog's hairs waft about it in little fluff balls.
