Do people use their hoover in the kitchen??

I had always not, as my mum doesnt. She says that you dont want food inside the hoover.

I've told dp off when hes suggested hoovering the kitchen, and got out the old brush instead.

But after seeing a video on facebook of someone hoovering their kitchen i wonder if its me thats strange? We eat in the living room so when i hoover in there, there are food crumbs so i suppose my argument is gone...

Mumsnet consenus, do you hoover the kitchen??

YABU - of course you hoover in the kitchen
YANBU - no way, you have to use a brush for the kitchen floor!

Crumbs and general dirt - yes.

Anything moist - no (don't want it getting stuck in the hoover or making it smell).

MrsTrumpton · 24/02/2022 09:31

Of course I hoover – it's only a few crumbs on the floor, not entire pizza slices and half an egg sandwich! I've never heard anyone not wanting to hoover the kitchen because they didn't want food inside their Henry.

ComDummings · 24/02/2022 09:31

I always hoover the kitchen before I mop. Too lazy to brush it Grin obviously not any wet food or anything that’s spilled, that gets cleaned up at the time so it’s always dry, just a few crumbs usually.

@Aroundtheworldin80moves

We always hoover after smashed glass as we find it gets the smallest bits.
No! That's the way to ruin your hoover. Put on heavy duty fabric gloves (all good households should have these Wink ), pick up the big bits of glass and wrap in a couple of sheets of newspaper. Then go over the floor with a slice of bread and put in the newspaper to throw out. The bread picks up all the tiny splinters that otherwise get in your bare feet and cat's paws.

How much smashed glass do you get btw? It's an occasional thing with us.

@IsAnybodyListening

Yes! I even hoover the garden decking, so much quicker than sweeping!
My neighbour hoovers her stone patio!
moneymoneymoneybags · 24/02/2022 09:33

Yep always hoover the kitchen we get too many crumbs!

OrganisedChaos22 · 24/02/2022 09:33

I do it's a dark floor and shoes every bit of crumb and dust.

I also hoover my garage! The thick cobwebs, the floor gets so dusty it gets traipse indoors. Prob twice a year. Then change hoover bag, Because you know... Spiders

garlictwist · 24/02/2022 09:33

Surely you're not hoovering up entire pies at a time, just crumbs. And don't you empty the hoover anyway?

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 24/02/2022 09:37

@limitedperiodonly we pick up the big bits first, and sweep. Its just for the final little slivers... the hoover is 10 years old and going strong.

It only happens every couple of months usually. We are a bit clumsy at times.

ChatterMonkey · 24/02/2022 09:41

@museumum

I sweep because i find it easier to get into the corners (where the crumbs go) but I’m surprised you told your dh off for hoovering- each ti their own surely? Dh does things differently to me and I couldn’t care less.
I told him off because i thought it was bad for the hoover to have food crumbs in it 🙈

So it wasnt an each to their own situation, i thought he would damage our expensive shark haha. Turns out i owe him an apology...

@Aroundtheworldin80moves I admit my bread tip may not be for everyone.

@FolornLawn

Oh lord, yes. I’m a fearless hooverer. I’d probably draw the line at a full rasher, but otherwise if it’s on the floor it’s fair game.
Grin

Most food debris gets caught by the dog before it hits the floor, anything that makes it down and isn’t dog-worthy gets hoovered.

PerditaPerdita · 24/02/2022 09:59

Totally hoover it

ChatterMonkey · 24/02/2022 10:00

I think the consensus is that we need a dog!

Yes I definitely vacuum the kitchen! I mean I don’t get the vacuum out if I’ve just spilt bolognese sauce obviously, but I vacuum the floor as part of normal cleaning.

Sunnyday321 · 24/02/2022 10:06

I do both sweep & hoover , I have a Shark cordless and empty after every time.

Bichette · 24/02/2022 10:08

Our hoover bag is probably 90% full of crumbs as DH loves unsliced crusty loaves. I hoover the floor, the bread board, the bread bin, the toaster crumb tray, the cutlery drawer. I've even hoovered the veg drawers in the fridge.

Nelliephant1 · 24/02/2022 10:12

I sweep my kitchen several times a day but I always give it a good hoover a few times a week as you can get into nooks and crannies with the hoover that you can't get with a brush.

🤣🤣 this made me laugh! I'm the same, the DC are fearful for their Lego!

Or the broom pushed it further into the nooks.. I can at least you the hose on the vacuum to get it up easier.

Daisydoesnt · 24/02/2022 10:31

*It reminds me my parents always had this rule that you should never wash up the teapot, because you would never be able to get the suds of fairy liquid out of it. Isn't that bonkers too?!

Wow. I clean the kettle once a week. I couldn’t not rinse a teapot. How much fairy liquid were they using and did they not believe in rinsing*

Truth be told (and BTW I adore my parents but their hygiene standards are not high) it was probably nothing to do with the suds but rather it was one less thing to wash up.

mouse70 · 24/02/2022 10:37

Dustpan and brush as required.(Just bought long handled ones as getting older!!) Vacuum weekly and steam clean after this. Hate it when people do not cleaning up dropped food after cooking. I seem to be the only one that sees the crumbs or bothers.

WheresYourSnickers · 24/02/2022 10:40

@wannadisc0

I always hoover the kitchen.

However I never wash the teapot with anything other than plain hot water. Otherwise you take away the build up of tannins which is why tea tastes better out of a pot!

I regularly stick the tea pot in the dishwasher - not a tannin in sight after that 😜
womaninatightspot · 24/02/2022 10:43

I hoover the kitchen then mop. I have a shark so you empty it all the time anyway. I used to have a henry and I'd sweep the floor as you the bags last ages and you don't want stuff going moldy in there.

Winday · 24/02/2022 10:47

Yes, we use the hoover. It's just dry stuff being sucked up, and we have a rug, so we need to hoover that of course.
