AIBU but isn't it a bit daft to end all Covid restrictions so soon.....

I'm pretty worried TBH, particularly the move from people not having to isolate if they have Covid. Let's face it a lot of people won't be able to afford to isolate! Surely this will simply allow the virus to circulate more widely - so more people with Covid, and more vulnerable people with Covid. What happens when the vaccine immunity starts to wane? What happens if we get a really dodgy variant? Why can't the government impose mandatory mask wearing on transport and shops? This would stop spread, I'd really like to hear views on this please.

@Mumofsend no one is saying that we want to go back to school closures and isolation of close contacts. This move (letting people go about their business with covid) is much more likely to lead to restrictions like those coming back.

I feel for you, my dd is most likely on the spectrum too and the disruption due to covid has meant we are now two years down on the waiting list for assessment whilst it was only 6-9 months per covid. This has been an awful time for SEND kids especially as there has been no constant. This is not the right choice though and has not been made in the interests of people like you and me, but in the interests of a narcissist trying to save his own skin.

FlatSusy · 23/02/2022 09:38

@Smartiepants79 maybe they could start with no subsidising the bar in the House of Lords? Stop giving their mates contacts even though they're not the best people for the job? Stop bailing out banks? Seriously investigate corporate tax avoidance?
Why is it always the people who have to bear the brunt of the cost saving?

OlympicProcrastinator · 23/02/2022 09:40

I look forward to the 'colleague came in and gave us all covid' threads in a few months time

Preferable to the ‘I lost my home and can’t pay my bills as I had a isolate for two weeks because I kept testing positive despite having no bloody symptoms’ as was the case for me last year.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 23/02/2022 09:43

@Using4532

Not a moment too soon, I certainly won't be voting for the lockdown Labour Party next time
FFS. Are you one of those sheep who believes everything Johnson says, even now?

@TheKeatingFive

*Once again, we are shown that the economy is more important than a life. Any life

The U.K. has spent circa 400 billion on covid response measures. It won't be people at your point in life paying that back either. Some acknowledgment of that impact wouldn't go amiss.

Quite.
FlatSusy · 23/02/2022 09:47

@OlympicProcrastinator how would taking away support payments help that situation? We had to isolate, lost £500 from wages and overtime. We weren't eligible for the government support but I'm damn glad it's there for those who need it to eat. This will just force those in poorly paid, customer facing jobs to go to work with covid. They might not be as lucky as you.

That’s all fine but i can think of several things I would rather that money was spent on.. special needs education, mental health services, etc etc….

Waxonwaxoff0 · 23/02/2022 09:49
@LondonWolf so what about what we have now is restrictive for you? Having to stay in when you have covid? Wearing a mask in a really crowded area like a train platform? That's really all I can think of. Nothing else is being restricted by the government. You can go to a club and lick the podium if you wanted, but the club might ask for you to test first.
This is a huge blow to employees rights. No support payments if you get ill and your employer can suggest that you come in with covid. Even though nursery won't take your child or your child could spread it round the school? Most people can't afford to lose money or lose their jobs and so will come in, causing much more sickness for everyone.
I look forward to the 'colleague came in and gave us all covid' threads in a few months time.
My colleague came in and gave me Covid last August. It's nothing new for those of us working out of the home.

sidesplittinglol · 23/02/2022 09:50

Even the WHO are saying it's far too soon to cancel all restrictions. This move is not about the welfare of the public but in the interest of the BJ and the party gate scandal.

They did the same with July opening.

It will always be their position but they don’t always get it right.

I’m already in that kind of job and wasn’t eligible for anything at all.

OlympicProcrastinator · 23/02/2022 09:58

And we can’t just keep paying those who are eligible to stay at home if they are well enough to come to work for what is now, a mild illness. Business can’t do that and a poor economy has a direct impact on peoples lives and health.

2X4B523P · 23/02/2022 10:07

What has Nicola been up to? If restrictions are only removed to distract from something else then there must be something about to be revealed in the press. What’s she been doing?

GirlInACountrySong · 23/02/2022 10:10

Haha yes! Nicola S.... bit surprised at the news for Scotland

Anyway, today is the last day of it all!

End of an era!

TheKeatingFive · 23/02/2022 10:11

What has Nicola been up to?

See also the governments of ROI, Norway, Sweden and Denmark. And NI.

Silverswirl · 23/02/2022 10:11

@WonderfulYou

Why are people looking forward to the restrictions ending?

I would say my life is pretty much back to normal so it’s interesting to know how other people are impacted.

Going abroad is obviously different but I didn’t go abroad very often anyway and different countries will have their own rules anyway.

I think I’ll keep wearing a mask in large crowds if it’s comfortable like shopping as I didn’t actually realise how grim some people are and it’s been lovely not getting the normal bugs.

I’ll also continue to carry a hand sanitizer around which I didn’t before, especially after today when a man sneezed in his hand and continued to push his trolley and fumble about with the apples.

Do you have kids in school? Do you have to work and also have kids in school? If so you will know that the slightest cough or sniffle and that child is asked to remain at home pending the results of a pcr. And if that pcr comes back positive then it’s 5-7 days that child has to remain indoors. Not playing, not being educated properly, not socialising with his or her friends. Even if (as it overwhelmingly likely) they feel absolutely fit and well. Not really sure how ignorant you have to be to think people still arnt impacted.
sst1234 · 23/02/2022 10:14

@HoldingTheDoor

I wonder if those of you who are saying it's so minor are young? I'm in my 50s. DD17 has a bit of a sniffle and could have gone to school.

It genuinely is thar mild for some, regardless of age. Just as its devastating for others, I'm in my '30s and I was much more ill with it than my 60 year old Mother, who felt slightly tired and had slightly achy legs. Or my 82 year old relative in the UlS who developed it before vaccines were available and felt only a little more tired than usual, in spite of being morbidly obese, diabetic, having heart and lung issues and is on oxygen. I've known several other older people who had mild symptoms. Of course the risk increases will age but its perfectly possible to still have a very mild case.

So what? Really, so what?

WHO is saying this based on what? The level of risk that they are prepared to accept. Well, if a population is prepared to accept a higher a level of risk, then great, that’s what we should do. If WHO said never ease restrictions, should we accept that also?
HoldingTheDoor · 23/02/2022 10:28

So what? Really, so what?

I was responding very specifically to DizzyDizzyDizzy, who asked if it was only young people who had very mild symptoms. I don't recall rattling your cage. Also, I now have Pink's So What stuck in my head now, so thanks for that.

I just wish they had waited until March like last year - when everyone is naturally outside more and the numbers fell massively in the Spring. He has just rushed it through as a distraction because it suits peoples own selfish wants.

FlatSusy · 23/02/2022 10:46

On a side note I work in MH services and in my experience it's not suffering from a lack of funds, it's a lack of trained staff. We can't get consultants for love nor money. There just aren't any.

LindaEllen · 23/02/2022 10:47

@GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal

So soon?! It's been two years!
I came here to say exactly this, word for word.

How much more of your life would you LIKE to waste, OP?

'He' can't just do that. It had to go through other people as well it can't be just his decision and that's it!

Spidey66 · 23/02/2022 10:54

I'm starting a bonfire in my back yard to bend my facemasks with.

Of course it's not too early. Covid ain't going anywhere. We have to live with it the same way we live with flu and norovirus.

How many have you got?

Be careful though, don't set fire to the fence (like my neighbour did in July)
