AIBU but isn't it a bit daft to end all Covid restrictions so soon.....

I'm pretty worried TBH, particularly the move from people not having to isolate if they have Covid. Let's face it a lot of people won't be able to afford to isolate! Surely this will simply allow the virus to circulate more widely - so more people with Covid, and more vulnerable people with Covid. What happens when the vaccine immunity starts to wane? What happens if we get a really dodgy variant? Why can't the government impose mandatory mask wearing on transport and shops? This would stop spread, I'd really like to hear views on this please.

@VelvetChairGirl

your vaccine immunity wears off after a couple of months and doesnt offer full coverage anyway.

get over it, we always knew it was here to stay and would melt into the background like the Spanish flu did.

Nobody knows how it will mutate yet. Are you Mystic Meg?
StarCat2020 · 23/02/2022 11:09

melt into the background like the Spanish flu did
H1N1 flu is still around and is the "main" winter flu every few years,

2009 "swine flu" was H1N1 flu.

The other regular "treats" are H2N2 and H3N2

@WeatherwaxOn I work in ICU, never worked from home. Maybe next time vote for a reputable party with a decent leader ? Which is actually bothered about the electorate and not some obsession with selling stuff off to mates and cutting any kind of benefits to support those in need. And note that cuts to benefits are always fine and deserved as long as it’s not you bearing the brunt.

BewareTheLibrarians · 23/02/2022 13:10

@Using4532

Not a moment too soon, I certainly won't be voting for the lockdown Labour Party next time
This Labour Party?

Labour will today announce ambitious plans to create a country that can “live well with Covid” without the need for future harsh restrictions, as it seeks to prevent Boris Johnson claiming credit for his record on the virus.
Keir Starmer said he wanted people to be able to “live their lives as normal” and never again face “tough restrictions on our lives, our livelihoods and our liberties”

amp.theguardian.com/world/2022/jan/16/better-sick-pay-testing-and-ventilation-labours-covid-plan-to-keep-uk-open

In the letter, Starmer notes that the lockdown has “exacerbated existing inequalities”, warning that some people are struggling with their mental health, some with job insecurity, and loneliness.
www.theweek.co.uk/106625/uk-coronavirus-response-would-labour-do-things-differently?amp

Doesn’t really sound like the party of lockdowns, does it? And it’s refreshing that they have plans to deal with covid without the need for lockdowns, unlike the Conservative party who’s strategy seems to be “stop testing, don’t ventilate, reduce sick pay, fuck the poor” which is more likely to increase lockdowns in the future.

Well yes.
I didn't vote for this bunch of charlatans.

I'm appalled at how much money is wasted/written off. Sickening.

NoSquirrels · 23/02/2022 13:16

This is a huge blow to employees rights. No support payments if you get ill and your employer can suggest that you come in with covid. Even though nursery won't take your child or your child could spread it round the school? Most people can't afford to lose money or lose their jobs and so will come in, causing much more sickness for everyone.

‘‘Twas ever thus. It’s not a rolling back of employee rights, it’s just a reversion to the extraordinary rights granted during a pandemic.

I wish everyone had better sick pay and decent employers and didn’t have to go to work sick and I wish working parents could square the circle on childcare provision and their jobs when needs compete.

But it’s not unique to Covid-19.

Quite frankly I wasn't prepared for the spleen exhibited by some responders on this issue. I was only outlining my concerns and just wanted some reasoned opinions. One poster saying that mask wearing makes no difference to contagion is just plain silly - er...so why do surgeons wear masks?
My view is that we have to take individual responsibility to stop ourselves and others dying - so:

  • we should wear masks wherever we can.
  • self isolate if you have Covid

But thanks for your opinions. It's given me a true snapshot of the state this country is in.

I still think you’re ignoring the costs.

It’s not really about the ‘state this country is in’ but the massive costs incurred so far and healthcare situation.

Don’t think it particularly helped that there has been two years of vicious and scornful comments from some posters aimed at the “other side”.

A few examples include the berating of people for buying what they didn’t deem essential shopping, going out twice a day for exercise, people sitting on their own on a park bench, the hate and bile directed against people who were exempt from wearing masks and so on.

ilovesooty · 23/02/2022 17:35

Whatever the reasons, there were always going to be posters who felt it was OK to be spiteful to people who are concerned and posters who think their sarcastic hyperbole is amusing.

Yes, there have been some ridiculous comments on this thread aimed at people who feel that perhaps a little bit of caution on the part of Boris Johnson in ending restriction would be a good idea.

I desperately want restrictions to end and long for normal life to resume but the fact is if we're hit with yet another variant, which is possible and highly likely, a complete lack of testing will not show that up until it's had time to take hold.

No one has any idea if the next variant, or the one after that will be milder or more severe than the ones we've had until now and to some of us it just feel sensible not to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

And just for clarity, I'm not hysterical about keeping restrictions. I've never ever washed my shopping in my life and I have certainly never berated anyone for buying, or wanting to buy anything.

Frankly, I was more concerned with how the whole horrible situation was impacting on our death rates, people's lives and my own and other's physical and mental health to worry about what people were putting in their shopping baskets.

Clearly there are some people who have difficulty accepting that other people have differing opinions from their own and find sensible discussion a difficult concept to grasp.

Surgeons wear mask to stop blood and bits of tissue that carry serious diseases such as hepatitis and HIV from being inhaled and ingested. Surgical masks don’t protect them from airborne viruses.
TellMeMoreHellebore · 24/02/2022 10:43

The surgeon comparison is ridiculous

They scrub up properly....the public,well...

I don't see anyone wearing masks correctly....all dirty multiple use masks pulled out of pockets and bags....no sanitiser before/after....touching fiddling and adjusting.....worn under chin

No surgeon does that

TrueBuys · 24/02/2022 10:49

Yabu. Unless you want to bankrupt the country we all need to crack on, go to work and stop all this nonsense.

I've had covid and had to isolate over a week whilst perfectly healthy. A waste of time and money, my colleagues having to pick up the slack.

TellMeMoreHellebore · 24/02/2022 11:08

Already had 2 customers come in saying 'I have covid, is it ok to be here'

You know it is, telling our staff that is just cruel. The first one had a mask on and nipped in and out with goods

Second one refused our offer of a mask and was rather smug about being out and about with all eyes on her!

Rummikub · 24/02/2022 12:31

If I was due to go on holiday and a colleague cane in Covid positive I’d be worried about it affecting my plans!

Huge difference between the way that surgeon's prepare and wear masks than how the general public do!! Completely ridiculous comparison!

Yep exactly this Like some low IQ victory parade

Personally I am hopeful we can get through this. But would have preferred the relaxation a bit later and testing to be available if requested. But Boris needed a distraction so hear we are

And I have never washed shopping, I go to concerts, meals, cinema etc. but also do lateral flow tests and wear a mask. Doesn't have to be the two extremes

Chonfox · 24/02/2022 18:54

Surely the people wanting to remain in eternal lockdown, hiding from a disease that will cause them no long term harm, are the ones on the low IQ side? Or the "in need of a Xanax" parade at least!

ilovesooty · 24/02/2022 19:06

Has anyone said that they want to remain in eternal lockdown? Must have missed that. Hmm

Curiousmouse · 24/02/2022 22:59

Ridiculous to end testing for covid and isolation with it. That isn't lockdown.

Libraryghost · 25/02/2022 00:01

When would it be acceptable to end restrictions? Covid is here to stay. We cannot live our lives in a constant state of fear. At some point and it may as well be now - we have to get on with it. The queen is 95 and still on light duties!

Kind of proving my point by not reading the rest of my post and using phrases like eternal lockdown... as if only 2 extremes exist

Well done
