WIth my Hotpoint, you have to press the cancel button to switch it off, set the programme then press start. If you don't it just flashes at you.
SOunds like yours might be a bit the same.

Re your drier - does it have a reset button at the back? My Bosch does that sometimes if it had overheated beacuse the filter has not been cleaned out.

no luck with the drier but i think i have worked out the washing machine

you aren't allowed to shut the door until after u have put in clothes put in detergent picked programme and set spin time

then you close the door and press the start/cancel button

if you close the door straightaway after putting the clothes in then it won't start and just flashes
